Be it known that I, JOI-IN H. SHAW, of the city and county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
rThis invention relates to locks, and it has special reference to locks of the type wherein a latch bolt is retractable from the outside of the door by a cylinder lock, and is also retractable by inside and outside knobs, there being suitable night latch mechanism associated with the outside knob to dog or release the same. Certain features of the invention, however, are applicable to locks of other types.
rlhe invention has among its objects the provision of key mechanism operable by a bolt retracting master key to block the retraction of the latch bolt from the outside of the door by the knob mechanism and by the change key; the provision of means at one side (the inside) of the door to dog the outer manual retracting device for the latch bolt and simultaneously block the operation of the key actuated means at the other' side (the outside) of the door; the provision of means whereby a cylinder lock at one side of the door is operable to block the operation of a cylinder lock at the opposite side of the door; the provision of a lock in which a master key inserted at one side of the door blocks the operation of a change or ordinary key at the opposite side of the door; and the general improvement in construction and operation of devices of the class to which my invention relates.
The foregoing and other novel features of the improved lock will appear clearly from thc following description and claims.

Referring to the drawings, the lock case ging position by means of a second thumb slide 22 also projecting through the face of the lock and connected with the slide 21 by the well known connecting lever or walking beam 23, fulcrumed in the case at 211. In order to hold the slide 21 firmly in either its dogging or non-dogging adjustment the customary retaining spring 25 and retaining lug 26 are employed.
The means for retracting the latch bolt 17 by a key inserted at the outside of the f lock comprises an irregularly shaped bell crank or elbow lever 27 (Fig. 10), pivoted in the upper part of the case at 28, and having a depending branch or arm 29 to cooperate with a cross-head 30 on the rear end of the latch bolt stem. The other arm or branch 31 of the elbow lever 27 has at its free extremity a relatively wide head or enlargement 32 which extends transversely@ across the case, closely adjacent the periphery of the inner cylinder lock 34:, and also closely adjacent the periphery of an outside cylinder lock 85 (Fig. 5) inserted in the outer Wall of the case in line With the cylinder lock 84.
Pivoted in the upper part of the case at 80 are parallel levers 87, 88, having enlarged beveled heads 8711, 88, respectively, at their free ends, which heads rest side by side on the upper surface of the extremity 82 of the latch retraeting lever, as shown in Fig. (5. rllhe lever 88 is provided near its free end with a lateral extension or lug 88b coperating with an up\\'ardly directed arm 89 of a keyactuated slide 40, having an upwardly directed extension or bit 41 adapted to be contacted by the short bit of the inside lock cylinder 84, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. rFhe slide 40 is located over a portion of the latch bolt reti-acting lever, as shown, and it is guided for late 'al movement in the case by means of a forked portion 42 fitting over a suitable guide or lug 48 on the back ofthe case. Said slide is also guided by means of the extension or bit 41 thereon, a portion of which is directed horizontally over and rests freely on a portion of the arm 81 of the bolt retracting lever. The slide is further guided by means of oppositely placed guides 44, 45, between which is located a lateral extension 4G on the slide, the purpose of which 'will hereinafter appear. rlhe arrangement is such that when the slide 40 is in the position shown in Fig. 1, its upwardly directed arm 89 will be clear of the projection 88b on the outer lever 88, thereby permitting said lever to be depressed in order to actuate the lever 27 to retract the bolt. However, when the slide 40 is in the position shown in Fig. 2, the arm 89 will have its extremity immediately beneath the projection 88b preventing a depression of the lever 88. The slide 40 is moved into either of the positions indica-ted in order to dog or release the lever 88, by .means of a master key inserted in the cylinder lock 84 and capable of rotating the short bit 88 in either direction, to move the dogging slide correspondingly. (Figs. 1 and The dogging or blocking of the lever 88 by means of the slide -10 set by the master key from the inside of the door, prevents the operation of the regular key or change key at the outside of the door. The regular key actuates the bit 47 of the outer cylinder lock 85, and in vievv of the fact that the bit or dog 4T is in line and rotatable into contact With the head 88u of the lever 88 (blocked by the arm 89) the bit or dog 47 will be arrested in the position indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 4, it being impossible for it to depress the arm 81 of the latch bolt retracting lever. The master key, however, is always operative from the outside of the door, in view of the fact that said key when inserted in the cylinder lock 85 will only rotate the bit or dog 48, Which is out of alinement with the blocked lever 88, and is therefore free to depress the lever 87, which, by its engagement With the Wide head 82 of the latch bolt rctracting lever, causes the latter to be actuated to Withdran7 the bolt. Preferably, the outer cylinder lock 85 is of the general type `disclosed in my Patent No. 080,018, dated September 4, 1906, having a tumbler controlled sleeve 85L surrounding the key plug 85". The change key rotates both the key plug and sleeve, and therefore rotates the bits or rollbacks 48, 47 which are connected to the key plug and sleeve respectively. The master key, on the other hand, rotates the key plug individually, and therefore turns the bit or rollback 48 Without moving the bit or rollback 47. When the slide 40 is moved out of coperation with the lever 88, by the rotation of the bit 88 of the inside lock cylinder in the direction of the arrow, Fig. 1, the bit 4T, actuated by the regular key from the outside of the door Will not be blocked, inasmuch as said bit may then move the lever 88V downivard to actuate the bolt retraeting lever.
The dog or bit 88 is, as previously stated, freely rotatable in opposite directions in order to shift the slide 40 into and out of its dogging position, and inasmuch as said dog or bit is relatively short it will not, in rotating, contact with any part of the lock, except the bit or extension 41 of the clogging slide. The bits 47 and 48 of the outer cylinder lock, on the other hand, have stop means associated therewith to prevent them from contacting with the dogging slide. When said bits are moved in the direction of the arrow, shown in Fig. 4, they Will of course operate the lever 27 before reaching the bit or extension 41 of the slide. lf said bits are rotated in the opposite direction, they .vill be arrested before contacting with the slide 40, by stop means such as a suitable pin 49 carried by the cap plate of the case.
The slide 40 has, in addition to the innetion above described, the function of dogging the night latch mechanism in its on position. This is effected in part by means of the hereinbefere described arm 46 on said slide which is adapted to actuate a pivoted flogging member or cam 50, pivoted at 51 to the wall of the case. The cam has a cam surface 52 (Fig. 9) adapted to coperate With the rear extremity 58 of the night latch slide 22. The arm 4G of the slide 40 actuates the cam 50, by means of aslotted connection embodying a pin or projection 54 on the end of the arm 46, taking into a slot 55 in the cam. Supposing the `night latch mechanism to be on, in which case the upper slide 22V will be protracted, the movement of the slide 40 into the position shown in Fig. 2, by an actuation of the master key at the inside of the door, will produce a downward swinging of the cam 5() on its pivot 51 into the position shown in Fig. 9, in which the cam is held irictionally againstl the rear extremity 53 of the slide 22, thereby effectively deadlocking said slide. Suppos ing, on the other hand, that the night latch mechanism is inoperative, the releasing member 22 being retracted, then the actuation ot the slide Ll0 in the manner just described will move the cam against the rear end of member 22 and thereby shift the night latch mechanism into, and lock it in, the operating position. It will therefore be understood that the invention comprises means operable by a master key at the inside of the door l'or clogging the night latch mechanism, and simultaneously rendering inoperative the regular key, it boing understood of course that the regular key will not at any time actuate the bit of the inner lock cylinder. Hence it will be seen that when the master key has been operated to throw the clogging slide 40 into its operative position the ordinary or regular key will no longer operate the'lock in any manner, and the outer rollback will be dogged until the master key returns the slide l0 to its inoperative position.
When the door is closed, the latch bolt 17 is automatically deadlocked by means such as the deadlccking lever 56, pivoted on the pivot 5l, and urged into the path of the bolt by a spring 57. Said spring, however, is rendered inoperative when the door is open by a spring protracted guard bolt or controlling member 58 having a hook 59, which when said lguard bolt is protracted holds the deadlocking lever 56 out of the path of the latch bolt. TWhen the door is closed, the guard bolt 58 is forced and held inwardly by the strike plate, in the well-known manner, as shown in Fig. 2, whereby the hook is moved into a position wherein it permits the spring 57 to throw the head of the deadlocking lever into a position back oit the latch bolt head and also back of the head ot the night latch slide 22. Both ot' said last named members will then be effectively doadlocked. On retracting the latch bolt by either roll-back or by the key actuated means, a shoulder G0 on the lever 27 will contact with a shoulder 6l on the tail of the deadlcel'ing lever and thereby throw said lever out oit the path of the latch bolt, the construction being such that the deadlocking lever is moved out of the way of the latch bolt beto-re the retraction of the latter' is berlhe means for deadlocking the latch bolt and one of the slides of the night latch mechanism by means ot a guard bolt or controller enacting with the strike plate does not, however, form any part of the present invention.
iVhile the foregoing description is a detailed one in so far as it concerns the particular embodiment of my invention selected for illustration, it will of course be understood that the invention is susceptible of numerous other embodiments within the scope oi the appended claims.
What I claim is l. In a lock the combination with a latch bolt, key operated means for retracting the same, a manually operable retracting means for the bolt, night latch mechanism associated with said last named means, and other key operated means which renders the iii-st named key operated moans and said night latch mechanism inoperative; substantially as described.
2. ln aV lock the combination with a latch bolt and manually operable reti-acting means therefor at one side of the door, of night latch mechanism to dog said retracting means comprising slides projecting through the face of the lock, a slide operated b y a key at the inside ot the door, and means operated. by said last named slide to move one of said night latch slides; substantially as described.
3. ln a lock, a latch bolt, manual retracting means therefor at the outside of the door, a change key, mechanism operable by said chanOe key to retract said bolt from the outside of the door, a master key adapted to retract said bolt from the outside of the door, and means actuated by said master key from the inside of the door to block the retraction of said bolt by both said manual retracting means and by said change key; substantially as described.
l. in a lock, a mortise case, a cylinder lock secured thereto, a plurality of rollbacks on said cylinder lock within said case, mechanism in said case adapted to be actuated by said rollbacks, one of said rollbacks being rotatable independently of the other, and means for preventing the operation ot one of said rollbacks; substantially as described.
5. In a lock, a mortise case, a cylinder lock secured therein, a plurality of rollbacks on said cylinder lock, a key to rotate all of said rollbacks siiuultaneously, another key to rotate one of the rollbacks individually, mechanism in the case adapted to be actuated by said rollbacks, and a blocking device adapted to be moved into the path of one ot said rollbaoks to prevent the rotation thereof; substantially as described.

In a lock, a cylinder lock, a plurality ot rollbacks carried thereby, one oli said rollbacks rotatable independently of the other, a change key adapted to said cylinder lock for rotating at least one of said rollbacks, a master key adapted to said lock for operating another rollback, and means actuated by said master Iey to prevent the operation of said change key; substantially as described.
7. In a lock, a cylinder lock, a. plurality of rollbacks carried thereby, a key to operate lll) sie
said rollbacks simultaneously, another key to operate one ot said rollbacks individually, and means operated by one of said keys to prevent the actuation of said cylinder lock by the other key' substantially as described.
8. ln a lock the combination of a latch bolt, retracting means for said latch including a single cylinder lock bolt actuated by dillerent keys inserted from the outside of the door, and means actiiated by one of said keys from the inside ot' the door to block the operation et said first named means by the other key; substantially as described.
f). ln a lock the combination of a latch bolt, retracting means therefor including a single cylinder lock operated by different keys trom the outside of the door` a cylinder lock for one of said keys at the inside ot the door, and means operated by said cylinder lock to block said retracting means against operation by the other key; substantially as described.
l0. ln a lock the combination of a latch bolt, means for retracting the same from the outside of the door comprising a cylinder lock operable by a. master key and an 0rdinary key, and means comprising a cylinder lock at the inside of the door operable by the master key, to block said retracting means against ope 1ation from the outside by means ot the ordinary key; substantially as described.
11. ln a lock the combination ot a latch bolt, ret acting means therefor operable from the outside ol the door and comprising a cylinder lock with a plurality of bits, and
means, comprising a cylinder lock at the inside o-f the door, to block one of said bits; substantially as described.
1Q. ln a lock the combination ot a latch bolt, means for retracting the same comprising a cylinder lock at the outside of the door having different bits, one ot said bits being operable by one key and another by another key, and means comprising a cylinder lock at the inside ot the door and operable by one of said keys alone, to block said retracting means against operation by the other key; substantially as described.
13. ln a lock the combination ot a latch bolt, retracting means therefor comprising a. cylinder lock at the outside ot' the door haring two bits, one ot said bits being operableiby a master key, and the other being operable by an ordinary key, and means comprising a cylinder lock at the inside of the door operable only by the master key, to block the moyement oil the bit actuated by an ordinary key; substantially as described.
14. ln a lock the combination of a latch bolt, retracting means therefor comprising a cylinder lock at the outside of the door having trio bits, one ot said bits being operable by a master key alone, and the other being operable by an ordinary key, and means comprising a cylinder lock at the inside ot' the door ope 'able only by the master key, to block the movement ot the bit actuated by an ordinary key, said blocking means also comprising a slide movable laterally in the case by direct engagement With the bit of the inner cylinder1 lock; substantially as described.
