It is apparent that the tension applied to the cord by the weight holds the gate normally in closed position, as shown in Fig.

' My iflte'ntion is an improvement in the class of devices which are adapted to close a laterally swinging gate automatically when the gate is released by'the person operating it. The closing apparatus is constructed and operated as hereinafter described and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure l is in part a side view and in part asection showing the preferred form of my invention applied'to a swinging gate. Fig. 2 is a plan View of the same. Fig. 3 is a plan view of a. modificatiom'a portion being in section to show interior construction.

As shown in Fig. 1, a gate F is hinged to a vertical post H and is adapted to swing horizontally in either direction. -The gate is provided'with a spring catch. which engages a catch on the opposite post.

A tube G is through the top portion of the post and fixed therein, while a larger and shorter tubular section G is screwed upon the outer end of tube G. A. spool or pulley C is mounted on ahorizontal axis in the outer end of a larger tube G; l'he inner end of the longer'tube is slotted horizontally, and the divided portions are flattened'and two spools or pulleys D are mounted on vertical axes in such portion of the tube, the same through the pulley sections G and Gr, and

posts; and that when the gate is pushed open, in either direction,the'cord is drawn over the pulleys C and D, and the weight A raised correspondingly; and that, upon re-- lease of the gate, it swings automatically back to its normal. position by the effect of gravity applied through the medium of the weigh A.

In a modification shown in Fig. 3, H in dicates a tubular post to the side of which tubes G, G, with attached pulleys G and D, are secured by a screw clamp.

The combination, with a post and a gate hinged thereto and adapted to swing later ally in either direction, of a horizontal support secured to the post and extending in opposite directions therefrom, the outer end of said support being provided with a horizontal. pulley, and the inner end with two vertical pulleys arranged side by side, and a weighted cord running on the outer pulley and between the inner pulleys, and inserted horizontally attached to the top portion of the gate, as described.

2. The combination, with a; post and a gate hinged thereto and adapted to swing in either direction, of a tubular support passing through, and fixed in, the said post, and having a horizontal pulley in its outer end, its inner end being slotted and provided interiorly with two vertical pulleys, and a weighted cord attached to the gate and passing between the adjacent pulleys and through the tube and over the outer pulley, as described.
