DEVICE FOR ADVERTISING PURPOSES.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, IRA A. MoCoRMaon, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, county and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Devices for Advertising Purposes, of which the following is a full,'clear, and exact specification.

This invention relates to a class of devices adapted to be used in conjunction with signs and the like.

My invention has for its object primarily to provide a device designed to be employed in a manner whereby a catchy and interesting effect may be produced in conjunction with signs, advertising cards, and the like for attracting the attention of the public when displayed by causing the eyes of the illustration of a person, or other animated obj ect to alternately move in lateral directions as well as rotatably move upwardly and downwardly so that the object will appear to be making various glimpses. This is accomplished mainly by orificing, or socketing the eyes of an animated object portrayed on a board, or backing member adapted to be displayed for advertising purposes in cars, boats, and other public vehicles. On the rear of the backing member is a movable carrier on which optical members representing the eyes of the animated object are arranged to ap ear through the orifices of the object, and this carrier is caused to be oscillated laterally as well as being rotatably moved upwardly and downwardly by the vibrations of the vehicles when traveling, thereby producing a very novel and effective advertisement.

Another object of the invention is to provide means for supporting the carrier on the back of the backing member; and a further object of the invention is to provide a device for advertising purposes of a simple and efficient construction, and which is susceptible of being made to sell at an unusually moderate price.

A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, the said invention being more fully de- Specification of Letters Patent.

In the drawing, Figure 1 is a front view of one form of device for advertising purposes embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged front view of the carrier with the separate eyes and the supporting casing used in the device. Fig. 3 is a sectional view, partly in detail, taken on the line III III of Fig. 2. Fig. 4: is a front view of a slightly different form of the carrier. Fig. 5 is an end view of the carrier shown in Fig. 4c, and Fig. 6 is a section taken on the line VIVI of Fig. 2.

The device has a board, or backing member 10 of cardboard, or any other suitable material, and this backing member may be of any desired shape and size adapted to be displayed in a stationary position especially in cars, boats, and other traveling vehicles so as to be observed by the passengers therein. On the front of the backing member is inscribed by printing, painting, or otherwise illustrating the picture, as 11, of a person, or other animated object suitably posed in association wth appropriate advertising matter so that the attention of the public will be attracted thereto. The eye portions of the picture of the animated object are orificed, or socketed, as at 12 and 12 and the optical members representing the eyes, as 13 and 13 of the object are arranged to appear through these orifices.

13 and 13 may be in the forms of colored illustrations on paper, cardboard, and the like, or the eyes may be of any other desired types. Both of the

13 and 13 are provided on a carrier, as 14, which is movably mounted on the back of the backing member 10, and this carrier is composed of a movable member or bar 15 of metal so 'as to be of sufiicient weight, or the bar may be made of light-weight material, such as wood, cardboard, thin metal, or the like.

In whatever position the eye orifices of the picture of the object may be the

13 and 13 are arranged on the bar 15 so that the pupils thereof will be in register with the orifices 12 and 12 for being seen by the observer. The bar 15 is preferably disposed longitudinally with relation to the backing member 10, and projecting from the central part of the ends of this bar in opposite longitudinal directions are two pivoting members, or

The central part of the lower edge of the bar 15 is cutout to provide arecess 18 of a suitable size for reception of a revoluble ball 19 which is of considerably less diameter than the size of the recess, and this ball is made preferably of metal so as to be of sutlicient weight to move the bar in alternate lateral directions when revolved accordingly so as to contact with the side of the recess. lVhen the bar 15 is of sullicient weight both the recess 18 and the ball 19 may be dispensed with if desired.

Serving as means to support the carrier 14: and the ball 19, on the rear of the backing member 10 is provided a casing, as 20. The casing 20 may be formed with spaced lower and upper longitudinally disposed walls 21 and 22 extending rearwardly from the back of the backing member, and the outer edges of these walls are connected by a back plate 23. At the ends of the casing 20 are two vertically disposed side walls 24 and 25, and through registered holes in these side walls are movably disposed the

16 and 17 of the bar 15 of the carrier for the bar to be accurately balanced. The bar 15 of the carrier is of considerably less dimension than the interior of the casing 20 so as to be adapted to oscillate in lateral directions as well as rotatably move upwardly and downwardly in the casing, while the

16 and 17 are of len ths to extend some distance eXteriorly of the casing to prevent the pins from becoming displaced from the casing during the oscillatory movement of the bar.

In practice the device is arranged so that the casing 20 with the carrier 14 will be disposed in a longitudinal direction in a car, boat, or other passenger conveying vehicle. During the travel of the vehicle its vibrations will cause the carrier when its balanced bar is properly weighted to oscillate automatically back and forth longitudinally as well as rotatably moving upwardly and downwardly, as shown in dotted lines at 26 and 27 Fig. 6, in accordance with the swinging or jarring movement of the vehicle. Then the ball 19 is employed in conjunction with the bar 15 of the carrier it is disposed in the recess 18 of the bar so as to revolve on the inner surface of the lower wall 21 of the casing 20, and the vibratory movement of the traveling vehicle will cause the ball to roll to alternately contact with the side walls of the recess of the bar. This bar will thereby be moved back and forth longitudinally in the casing, as indicated in dotted lines at 28 and 29 in Fig. 2, and the ball being smaller than the recess the bar will be rotatably swung on its pivots vertically. In this manner the

13 and 13 of the pictured animated object on the backing member 10 will be correspondingly moved to appear through the eye orifices 12 and 12* as making various glimpses, thus producing a very catchy and interesting effect for attracting the attention of the, observer to the advertising matter which may be displayed in conjunction with the pictured object.

In the foregoing description, I have embodied the preferred form of my invention, but I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself thereto, as I am aware that modifications may be made therein without departing from the principle, or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention, therefore I reserve to myself the right to make such changes as fairly fall within the scope of the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A device of the character described, comprising a backing member adapted to be displayed in a stationary position in a vehicle, and having on its front the representation of an animated object with orificed eye parts, separate optical members representing the eyes of the object, arranged on the back of the backing member to appear through the orifices of the object, and a carrier supporting the eyes, and movably mounted on the backing member so as to be oscillated longitudinally as well as rotatably moved vertically by the vibratory movement of the vehicle when traveling whereby the eyes will be synchronously moved therewith, for the purpose specified.

2. A device of the character described, comprising a board member adapted to be displayed in a stationary position in a vehicle, and having on its front the representation of an animated object with orificed eye parts, a casing on the back of the backing member, a bar movably mounted in the casing, and having a recess therein, separate optical members representing the eyes of the object, arranged on the bar to appear through the orifices of the object, and a ball rollable in the casing and in the recess of the bar so as to roll by the vibratory movement of the vehicle when traveling for oscillating the bar longitudinally whereby the eyes will be synchronously moved therewith, for the purpose specified.

3. A device of the character described, comprising a board member adapted to be displayed in a stationary position in a vehicle, and having on its front the representation of an animated object with orificed eye parts, a casing on the back of the backing member, a bar pivotally mounted in the casing so as to be oscillated longitudinally and rotatably moved vertically, and the bar having a recess therein, separate optical members representing the eyes of the object,
