T o cil 'whom 'it may concern: u f j Be it knotvuthat i, JOHN W. PAGE, a ,Zen ci the United States, residing at ,f ago, in the county of Cook and .State of lllinois, have invented a new and useful 'improvement in Excavating Devices, of which the following a specilicatiou.
lily invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in excavating devices, and is fully described and explained in the specification and shown in the accompanydrawings, in Which;-
Figure iis 'an elevation ci one end of rey inircved device in use, showing 'the bucket -in dumping position; Fig, 2 is a similar view of the opposite end showing, in dotted lines ie bucket in digging position; Fig. S3 is a sie@ elevation of buckennbd Fig. #l is a pier; of the trolley.
lleferring to the drawings, is a cable-- Way provided Wih he lusual means whereby may he tightened-and slackened. Upon this cable'ufay is a trolley in the preferred orrn consisting oi tvo parte, 5 and l, pia oted together and carrying rollers or wheels 8 running upon the cablewvay. Pivoted to Specification or ieters Eatent.
.- the trolley-is a bail E), so which ewiveled the 'an excavating shovel 1Q, the point ci the pivot preferably being -behind center o gravity of said shorel.k
ll is the haulingdine of the bucket, 12 is holdingdine thereof, and 13'is the loading-line to whichboth holding and haul-u ing lines are attached, as 1s common practice with 'the Page buckets new used for encapurposes. ln the particular example here shown, the holding-line l2 runs over e. she-ave' lll at the freut end of ihe bucket and thence beck to the sheave l5 carried by the bail. 'By this means a double purchase is obtained between the shea-ve andthe forward end of the bucket, this be ing an expedient frequently adoptedA in the use of 'the Page bucket.
'it will be evident from the drawings that the inclination of the cahle-way lis such that the bucket will run down so the point'at which it is sought to have it Work, and therefore no mechanism for hauling it in a backward direction is required in this par ticular instance. lt will also be evident to 'those skilled in the art that since there is no novelty in hanging a Page bucket on a cable-"Way, the parts heretofore described may be assumed to be olds The novelty in the present case lies in 'the :calcarea nag. lere.
means whereby Vthe bucket is dumped auto-v sheave i6. The result is that both the hold ing and hauling lines are slacked and the front of the bucket descends in an obvious mannen matically dumped at the proper point.
The present device has 'been found par` ticularly useful in. excavating gravel-pits and for similar purposes 'Where itl is sought to dump the material from many successive bucket loads in a predetermined position, as in the hopper shown in Fig. l. The bucket takes its load in the usual way and is sim- Thus the bucket is always autoply pulled forward by the machine until it automatically dumps. Then, by paying out the loading-line`,the bucket returns to the position /Where the operation can be rebelated` i l rrealize that considerable variation is possible in the details of the construction herein` shown, and l do not intend to limit myself thereto, except as pointed out in the following claims, in to claim all the nov ty inherent in the deviceas broadly as is permitted by the state of the art. l -V I claim as new and desire to secure ters Patent l. ln apparatus of the character sejt forth, the combination ci a main cable, a carria e movable thereon, a scrapenbucket pivotal y mounted on said carriage in the rear'of the center of gravity of the bucket when loaded, a haulingdine connected with said bucket; in advance of its center of gravit for pulling the bucket along said main cab e, and means operated by continuous forvfard movement of said hauling-line. for permitting said bucket to swing on 'its pivot 'to 'dumping position during said continuous forward movement of said haulingdinc.
2. In apparatus of the character set forth, 'the combination of a main cable, a carriage movable thereon, a scrapeubucket pivotally mounted on said carriage in the rear of the center of gravity of the bucket when loaded, a hauling-line connected with said bucket in advance of its center of gravity for pulling said bucket along said main cable, and means engaging said hauling-line in advance of said bucket operating at a predetermined point to accelerate the movement of said carriage along said main cable relative to the movement of said hauling-line, for the purpose set forth.
3. In apparatus of the character set forth, the combination of a main cable, a carriage movable thereon, a scraper-bucket pivotally `mounted on said carriage in the rear of the center of gravity oi' the bucket when. loaded, a. hauling-line connected with said bucket in advance of s center ,of gravity for pulling the bucket along said main cable, a block running on said main cable, a stop on said cable in the path of movement of said block, and a cable connected -with said block and carriage Aand operatively engaging said hauling-line, for the purpose set forth.
et. ln apparatus of the character set forth, the combination of a main cable, a carriage movable thereon, a scraper-bucket pivotally mounted on said carriage in the rear 'of the center of gravity of the bucket when loaded,
a hauling-line for pulling the bucket along 5. 'In apparatus of the character set forth,
the combination of a main cable, a carriage' movable thereon, a scraper-bucket pivotally mounted on said carriage in center of gravity of the a hauling-line for pulling the bucket along' said main cable, formed of sections connected with said bucket in advance of its center of gravity, one ofvsaid sections extending in the rear of lthe bucket when loaded,
engagement with' said carriage, ablock running on said main cable, in. the path of movement of said block, and ar cable connecting said block and carriage and operatively engaging said hauling-line, for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 31st day of July, 1913.
