CLAUDE HAMILTON, OF BITTERNE, ENGLAND.
GEARING FOR WINCHES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 315, 11916.
Application filed September 27, 1913. Serial No. 792,130.
T 0 aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLAUDE HAMILTON, a subject of the King of Great Britain. of Bitterne, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gearing for Winches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to winches and more particularly winches employed for hoisting boats. l have found that much valuable time is lost in the lifting of boats from their beds, the racking off of purchases while the falls are belayed ready for lowering and, further, the frequent jamming of the falls when lowering, owing to the lowering away pins provided being inadequate for the purpose and the object of my invention is to provide a convenient contrivance for overcoming this difiiculty.
The present invention consists in the application to and combination with ships davits of that type of winch wherein bollards are controlled by worm and wheel or equivalent gearing so that the bollards rotate in opposite directions and cannot walk back.
In the accompanying drawings I have illustrated my invention, Figures-1 and 2 being side and front elevational views respectively of a davit constructed and fitted in accordance with my invention and Fig. 3 is a sectional plan view through line A. A. of Fig. 2.
Referring to these drawings the numeral 1 designates a casting made in two halves which is clamped to the davit 2 in a convenient position. A worm 3 actuated by turning a detachable crank handle 4 engages the worm pinions 5 thus turning the pulleys 6 in reverse directions. If the purchase fall 7 be hauled handtaut and then belayed in the usual manner around the pulleys 6viz. figure of eight fashionby holding the slack end in one hand and turning the crank handle 4. with the other, the purchase will mechanically hoist the boat 8 attached clear of her bed. When high enough the handle can be unshipped and the boat turned out in the usual manner. The contrivance, being worm geared, will not walk back and the pulleys will afford a safe and easy form of cleat from which the boat may be lowered with absolute safety and complete control. It will be understood that the casting aforesaid may be made in any size required and the contrivance adapted to any form of davit.
In order that the apparatus can conveniently be operated by the right hand whatever the position of the operator I propose to provide the worm spindle squared at both ends so that the handle can be applied with equal facility at either end.
By means of my invention the necessity for passing the falls inboard for the hoisting of the boat clear of her bed is obviated as also is the racking off of the purchases while the falls are being belayed. There is thus as a consequence an economy in the number of men required to prepare the boat for lowering away and further the pins hitherto provided are dispensed with.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is Gearing for winches comprising a separable sectional casting having horizontal tubular extensions and the sections thereof forming a vertical tubular portion, shafts extending through the horizontal tubular extensions, a hoisting pulley on one end of each shaft, a gear wheel on the opposite end of each shaft, a worm gear operating between the gear Wheels for rotating the hoisting pulleys in opposite directions, a supporting element, the vertical tubular portion being adapted to embrace said supporting element, and means for securing said sections together, whereby the supporting element is embraced.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CLAUDE HAMILTON.
