Be it known that I, Josnrri E. CALIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Depauw, in the county of Harrison, State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Self-Regulating Stove- Dampers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to damper regulators, and it more particularly relates to an improved form of self-regulating damper for stoves, although, obviously, it is equally applicable to furnaces, boilers, etc.
An object of the invention is to provide a damper of this character which may be applied to stoves and furnaces of ordinary con struction or of any proper and preferred construction.
A further object of the invention is to provide a thermostatic regulating device for rotary stove dampers which embodies an ad justable thermostatic element for regulating the opening and closing movement of the damper, and adjustable means for regulating the throw of the damper actuating lever, whereby the throw of the latter may be regulated to allow of the device to be adjusted to stores containing rotary dampers of varying diameters or sizes.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved damper regulator of this character which is entirely automatic in its operation, and which, at the same time, is adapted to be operated independently of t as automatic operating mechanism.
Another object of the invention is to provide means whereby the damper regulating mechanism may be quickly and easily adjusted, so as to move the damper to a greater or less extent for a given temperature.--
Another object is to provide a device of this character which is simple of construction, comparatively inexpensive, durable and thoroughly efficient.
Other objects and advantages may be recited hereinafter and in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification; Figure 1 illustrates a fragmental portion of a stove having my improved damper and damper-regulating mechanism applied thereto, said damper and mechanism being in front eleyation. F 2 is asimilar view, illustrating my improved damper and regulating mechanism removed from the stove, and being in a different position of adjustment than illustrated in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Fig. -i is vertical sectional view taken on th line l-.i of Fig. 2.
Referring to these drawings, in which similar reference characters correspond with similar parts, throughout the several views, the stove or furnace 5 may be of any ordinary construction, but in the present instance, the front of the stove, to which the damper and regulator are applied, is curved. Upon this front portion of the stove is scoured a base plate 6 by means of a bolt or pivot 7, and adjacent to one end of this plate is secured the inner damper disk 8, which is rigid or fixedly connected to the stove 5 and carries a pivot element 9. The pivot element is formed with a reduced and which results in a shoulder 9. Upon the reduced portion of this pivot element and bearing against the shoulder 9 is rotatably mounted an intermediate damper disk 10 and an outer damper disk 11, the latter carryin g a toothed segment or gear element 12 and a racial extension or weight 13. Each of the damper disks is provided with apertures, each of which comprises approximately sixty degrees of the disk, so as to leave three equally spaced webs or shutters on each damper disk. These three damper disks are fitted snugly and smoothly together, and the intermediate damper disk is provided with a handle 1% by which it is adapted to be rotated, a spring element 15 being secured to the handle and extended into frictional contact with the inner damper disk 8, so to hold the intermediate damper disk in any desired adjusted position. The disk 8 carries a pair of stop lugs 3 which are arranged to be engaged by the handle it to limit the movement of the disk 10 into full open and full closed position and also by the weight 13 to limit the movement of the interinediate disk.
rictuating levers 16 and 17 are mounted upon the base plate 6, and are movably connected at 18 by means of a suitable joint, while the lever 16 is pivotally connected at 19 to the plate 6, and is provided with a toothed segment 20, meshing with the gear member 12. A suitable strap or limiting member 21 is secured to the plate 6 and extends over the lever 19, so as to provide a slot through which said lever 16 may swing on its pivot.
The lever 17 has its fulcrum in the ad justable. bearing block 22, said bearing block being provided with clamping jaws 23, through one of which extends a set screw 2-1, and bears upon the upper edge of the plate 6, so as to hold the bearing block in different positions of adjustment, the said bearing block being slidable lon itudinally of the plate 6.
A supporting bracket 26 is secured to the stove and is provided with a laterally extending apertured flange 27. A bar 28 of brass or other suitable metal is secured to the bracket 26 and depends vertically therefrom and is connected with the outer end of the plate 6. Through the aperture of the element 27 extends a rod 30 of steel or other suitable material, pivoted at 31 to the lever 17 the upper end of said rod being engaged by a thumb-screw 32 which rests upon the element 27. On opposite sides of the bar 28 and secured at their opposite ends to the bracket 26 and to the bar 28 are the steel holding arms 38.
Owing to the particular construction of my device, it will be manifest that I have provided one wherein there is an adjustable thermostatic element for regulating the opening and closing of a rotary damper, and one which embodies an adjustable ful crum whereby the throw of the rotary damper actuating lever may be varied to allow of the device to be adjusted to stoves having rotary dampers of different diameters.
From the foregoing, it will be seen that the weight of the free end of the plate 17 is counterbalanced by the weight 13 through the medium of the gear 12, levers 16 and 17, and rod 30; so that said plate 6 is held constantly in contact with the expansion rod or bar 28.
The coeilicient of expansion for the rod 28 should be considerably greater than that of the rod 30; but such relation of these clements is not absolutely essential, since the temperature of the rod 28 is increased greatly beyond that of the rod 30, on account of said rod 28 being directly in contact with the heated surface of the stove, while the rod '2 is spaced apart therefrom. In operation, as the temperature of the rod 28 increases, the expansion of said rod swings the plate 6 downward on its pivot, so as to cause a relative movement of said plate and the lever 17, its pivoted end being held substantially stationary by means of the rod 30. is imparted to the lever 16, on its pivot 19, and hence, the damper disk 11 is rotated, through the medium of the toothed elements 12 and 20, through an are proportional to the expansion of the rod 28. In order to change this proportion, the bearing block 22 may be moved longitudinally of the plate 6 and lever 17 so that the damper disk 11 is rotated more or less for a given temperature according to the direction in which the hearing block is moved, and the leverage of the lovers 1G and 17, changed proportionatelyl lVhen it is desired to close the damper entirely or to regulate the draft independently of the damper disk 11, and its operating mechanism, it is only necessary to move the handle 14 in the proper direction and through the proper angle or are.
From the foregoing, it will be seen that I have provided a self-regulating damper of this character, which is fully capable of attaining the foregoing objects, in a thoroughly practical and efficient manner.
1 do not limit my invention to the exact details of construction, combinations and arrangements of parts, as herewith illustrated and described, but my invention may only be limited by a reasonable interpretation of the claim.
Vvhat is claimed is:
In a device of the class described, the combination with a stove having a rotary damper, of an adjustable thermostatic element secured to the stove at one end, a bearing plate pivotally mounted at one end upon the stove and pivotally connected at its opposite end to the free end of the thermostatic element, a damper actuating lever pivoted adjacent one end on said plate and having a toothed segment at its free end, a toothed segment carried by the rotary damper and meshing with the segment of the lever, an adjustable block slidably mounted upon the bearing plate, an adjustable ever fulerumed within the said block and connected at one end to the said damper actuating lever, and means for holding the said block in any desired adjusted position whereby the throw of the damper actuating lever may be varied to operate dampers of different sizes.
