Description

F. E. RICE.
ADJUSTABLE FLANGE usmNG.
APPLICATION FILD IAN-2,1914.
Patented Aug. 15, 1916.
FRANK E. RICE, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO AMERICAN TAI BUSH COM- PANY, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN, A CORPORATION F MICHIGAN.
AIOJ'USTABLE FLAN GE-BUSHIN G.
Application led January 2,
To aZZ uzom z't may concern: y
Be it `known that I. FRANK E. RIC-E, a
and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Flange-Bushings, of which the f'iollowing is a. specification, reference b eing had therein to the accompanying drawings.
In the adjustment for bushes for receivmg taps for drawing of'the contents of metal packages, such as enameled or glass lined heer kegs and the like, it is advantageous 'that the parts be so disposed as to permit adjustment for variation in the thickness of a. receptacle wall.
rIbis invention relates to a bushing for securing a tap in a metallic package and toV an arrangement thereof whereby the bush is adaptable for use with insulated and enameled or porcelain lined walls of varying thicknesses.
The invention consists in the matters hereinafter set forth and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure l isa plan view of a portion of a. package equipped with a bushing that embodies features of the invention; Fig. 2 is a. view in detail and transverse section of -a port-ion of the package and the bushing.
As herein shown in preferred form, a
package, illustrated as a. beer keg, has an outer metallic 'shell 1 and an inner metallic lining Q separated by suitable insulating.
materials 3, such as cork or the like, and arranged to' be enameled-on the inner face, of the lining. A bushing body 4 that has a recessed outer face, is secured in an open-i ing through the outer wall 1 and the lining 3 with an exterior marginal flange 5 seated against the outer face of the outer lining. A nipple 6 is arranged in Screwthreaded engagement with a central opening in the inner end portion of^the bushing body with-a slightly reduced innerportion 7 extending through a mating opening in the lining 2. The bore of the nipple is ar-4 ranged to receive the tap tube and 1t has on its outer end portion interrupted flanges 8 or the like holding means by which a tap may be secured when a tap tube is inserted to prevent leakage. The inner portion 7 of the nipple and the outer flange 5 of the body are both arranged to be brazed or Specification of Letters Patent. Patent-gd Augfj 1916,
1914. Serial No. 810,025.
welded as indicated at'lOv to respective mewhose walls may accidentally vary in thickness owing to the enameling and glazing processes to which they are subjected. When secured-in place it is to be understood that an enamel lining may be applied to the interior of a package and the exposed portion y of the nipple.
Obviously, changes in the details 'of construction may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention and I do not care to limit myself to any particular form or arrangement of parts.
`What I claimis s l. The combination with a liquid contain-` ing package having a wall formed with an outer metallic shell, an inner metallic lining, and insulating material separating the shell and lining, of a bushing having a cy.
lindrical body provided with an exterior annular flange at the outer end and ar recessed outer end face with a central opening through the inner end face, the outer exterior liiange being adapted to bear against the outer metallic shell when the bushing is inserted in an opening through the wall of the package, and a nipple in'screw threaded engagement with the central opening that is contained within the recessof the outer end face ofthe bushing, the inner end portion .of the nipple having an exterior an' Inular flange thatbears against Vthe lining on the interior of the package and prevents contact between any liquid contents of the package with the insulating material.
2. The lcombination with a liquidvcontaining package having a wall with an apertured outer metallic shell, an inner metal lining 'having a smaller aperture alined with that of the outer metallic shell and insulat-` ing .material separating the shell and lining havlng an opening substantially coincident with the outer opening of the vouter shell, 105
of a bushing having a cylindrical'body that tits closely in the openingsthrough the outer shell and insulation and is provided with an 'Y exterior annular flange that hears against the marginal portions of the shell Surround- 110 r ing the openings, the outer face of the bushof the lining that surrounds the opening 10 i ing lhaving a, deep recess communicating therethrough.
lwith a, screwthreaded opening at the inner- In testimony whereof I affix my signature A plethreaded through the opening into the I recess of the bushing and provided with an Witnesses:`
end of the'bushing that is in register with n presence of two Witnesses. the opening of the inner'lining, and a nipf Q A FRANK E`RI'CE exterior annular flange on the inner end C. R. .STICKNEY, thereof that overlies 'the merginal portions` L. EplLANDEBe.v
