" PATENT FOLDING TABLE.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, KARL G. J oHANsoN, a citizen of the United States, and a. resident of Concord Junction, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Tables, of which the following is a specification.

This invention aims to provide top stays, brace and locking device for cross legged two leaved top folding tables, the objects of which are, first, convenience; and second stability. These objects are attained by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the table in folded position, part of the legs being omitted. Fig. 2 is a section on line 3. 3. of Fig. 1, one side and part of the legs being omitted. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the table in unfolded position, part of both the legs and top being omitted; and Fig. l is an end elevation with one side and also part of the legs being omitted.

The legs (4:) are pivotally connected at point (7) as best shown in Fig. 2, the upper ends being pivotally connected to the top stays (8) at points (9), the latter having an identical form, a lateral projection 5% extending from the pivotal center 6, said pivot being placed eccentrically, thereby providing an absolute stop, one for the other whereby the top surface of both stays when unfolded form a straight line independent of the top members (10).

The direction in which each of the upper ends of the brace members 5 are moving when the table is unfolded can best be understood by Fig. 8 where part of the mem bers are exposed to view and as the top stays 8 are all identical inform and placed in pairs as shown in Fig. 4:, it will be seen that the tops of the inner legs A move in opposite directions with the unfolding of the table, carrying the upper ends of the brace members 5 with them thereby giving a uniform stability to the table. The lower end of brace (5) being pivotally connected to the legs at the pivot point of the latter at point (16) on a common pivot makes it a permanent seat for said brace which gives Specification of Letters latent.

continuous stability to the table whether folded or unfolded and at any intermediate point.

A recess is provided in the top stays at point (20) as shown in Fig. 2 wherein the pivots are properly seated so that the rivets do not extend beyond the plane of the top stays, thus giving an easy movement to the table. A slot is provided at point Fig. 2, for the purpose of giving free play to the shrinking and swelling of the top members, while the inner edge is tightly fastened as shown at points (22) thereby assuring a good joint when the table is unfolded as shown at point (21) Fig. 3.

A locking device is arranged to fold automatically with the unfolding of the table, comprising folding members 0 and 17, having its lower end pivotally connected to the legs at point (7) on a common pivot with the latter, the upper end pivotally connected to the top stay whereby upon unfolding the table the member (0) is brought parallel with the table top and locked in that position by a cam lever (19) pivotally connected to the top stay at point (1A) in such a manner as to be easily swung into place at point (23) Fig. 3.

I claim- 1. In a folding table having a top formed in two sections united by eccentrically pivoted top stays, each stay having a transverse projection extending beyond the plane of the other from the pivotal point throughout or part of their whole length, slots through said projections for receiving the top fastenings, a recess in the adjacent face of each top stay, pivots mounted in said recesses and projecting on the opposite sides of the top stays respectively, pairs of cross pivoted leg supports having their upper ends seated on said pivots, and a brace extending from the pivotal point at top of the inner leg support of each top section to the pivotal intersection of the opposite pair of leg supports.

2. In a folding table having a top formed in two sections united by eccentrically pivoted top stays, two pairs of leg supports pivoted together intermediate their ends the upper end of each pair being pivoted to the top stays, a locking device having its lower end pivotally connected to the leg supports adjacent the pivotal point thereof on a common pivot, the upper end pivotally connected to the top stay, a pivotal joint intermediate the ends, the upper part automatically folding with the unfolding of the table, and
