REINFOBCING-CHAIN.
Application filed June 24-, 1914, Serial No. 846,954. Renewed May 20, 1916.
To all whom it'may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. Conni- GAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Delta, in the county of Keokuk and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Reinforcing-Chains; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to reinforcing chalns and is particularly adapted for use In connection with harness traces.
The main object in my invention is to give a strong and durable trace construction and at the same time reduce the Weight thereof to a minimum.
I have shown the preferred form of my invention in the drawings, but desire it to be understood that I claim all possible modifications thereto that will fall within the scope of the claim appended thereto.
Similar characters of reference refer to similar parts throughout the drawings, in which,
Figure 1, is a side view of a trace wlth my improved attachment incased therein. Fig. 2, is an enlarged sectional view of the trace showing the chain construction partly in section. Fi 8, is a longitudinal sectional view through the trace and chain. Fig. 4, is a transverse sectional view thereof.
In the drawings 1 is a trace commonly used in harness construction comprising: an upper layer of strap material 2, and a corresponding lower layer 8, an interposed edging 4 at one edge thereof, and an interposed edging 5 at the opposite edge thereof, said interposed edgings being placed between the strap materials 2 and 3 and ending flush with their edges as shown in Fig. 4, said strap materials and edgings being sewed together as indicated at 6 and 7 in Fig. 4C of the drawings. This arrangement allows an inner chamber 8 extending the full longitudinal length of the harness trace and into this chamber I mount my reinforcing elements 9, said reinforcing elements comprising fiat bars 10 and 11 arranged in pairs, each pair of bars having a boss between the ends thereof, each boss having a semicircular face at one edge and a vertical face at the opposite edge, said vertical faces be- Specification of Letters Patent.

ing in registration with the ends of the bars so that the vertical face of one boss will be in juxtaposition to the vertical. face of the next boss. The pairs of bars 10 and 11 and the bosses therebetween are secured together by introducing rivets 12 transversely through the ends of the bars and the interposed bosses, the pairs of bars being assembled in chain formation by introducing oval-shape links 13 around the bosses at the meeting ends of the bars, and as the pairs of bars are spaced slightly apart, the chain will have a sufficient flexible movement to permit the same to conform to the conditions under which it is being used, and by assembling the sections in this manner, no abrupt or rough wearing edges are presented to the trace, while the strength will be greatly enhanced.
At one end of the chain construction I attach, by means of a pivot 14, an eyelet device 15, composed of sheet material properly bent to contour to receive a chain or doubletree hook 15, while at the opposite end, by means of a rivet 16, I attach a connecting device 17, said connecting device having apertures 18 and 19 therein adapted to receive fastening devices to fasten the chain construction to a collar, hame, if so desired.
Having now described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,
A reinforcing chain for harness traces, comprising bars arranged in pairs, bosses between the ends of said pairs of bars, the inner edges of said bosses being semicircular and the outer edges vertical, an oval link extending around the bosses at the meeting ends of the two pairs of bars, the ends of said pairs of bars and the vertical faces of the bosses being spaced apart, and rivets extending transversely through the bars and bosses pivotally securing the pairs of bars and the connecting link in assembled relation.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
