which thefollowing is a fulls clear, concise,
exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part l of thisfspeciiication.
liflyf'inventionrelates to improvements in wreath forms, hollow articles of paper,l and "if the process of 'manufacturing the forms or articles-ff :ff-fr `@neofthe V,jb'jects of my invention is the .provision of awreath formof paper which. cari hecheaply' manufacturedywhich is light fin' S'weigh-t, vv'rigid yin construction and impervious -to moisture. i ln:themanufacture of the forms or ar- Vv"ticles l providefafheated form or a pair of dies adaptedl to press la sheet of paper or materialsfintof, theI required shape, and an important feature of the invention resides in treating theffzpaper before being acted upon byl the dies.Witlira coating of glue, 'so` that 4`it@becomes:'moistv and pliable, permitting formingiof thea-sheet of paper, and so that thesheetafter'being formed becomes stiE 'v 'and rigid, the. glue hardening, due to the effeet-"of theheat transmitted to it from the 'll'n carryingout the. objects of the invention I provid'ecoperating male and female 'dies, onefbeingheated by gas, steam or any l.other.sui-tableineans. The sheet of paper of whifchtthe articles are made is formed of a layer' ofcard board like material such as pulp hoardfchip board or straw board, a
"coating of glue yon one or both sides thereof, and a layer ofilexible material which is preferably impervious to moisture over the glued surface ofthe straw board. The layer ofimpervious material performs several 4functions iin that it .prevents the sheet from adheringto the-dies,- assists in securing a rigid finished article and' prevents the admittance of moisture into the card b'oard af.-

To Ainsure rigidity `and to prevent thecard board frorn'tearing l provide an additional llayer of reinforcing material suchas" buckram'or rice net to the ysheet and a wire binding around eitherv oneor both `-e `lgesV ofthe wreath form. f .appiieation mes aprnaieie. sriaiivo-sego5sj y and Wire'binding notonly make the form generally u stronger, but positively prevent cutting into the card hoard when ornamental threador Wire roping isrwound around the form.
ln the accompanying.drawings lv have illustrated my improved wreath form and the process of manufacture thereof, but l ywish it to be understood that the process may be emplpycd with equal facility in the manufacture of other' hollow articles, such, for ,example,' as lamp shades', boxes, ete.
in the drawings- Figure 1 illustrates a verticall cross sectional view of a sheet consisting of several layers which is acted upon by the dies andformed into the/shape of a wreath form orfany other article desired. yFig. 2 is an enlarged cross sectional view of a portion of the sheet shown inFig. 1. Fig. 3 isa cross sectional 'view of the die members showing a paper form between the members. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the wooden bloclremplojved for pressing the sheet of materials into the general shape of the wreath form before 'the sheet is given vthe final form. Fig. l is a plan view of the finished wreath form as it is taken from the dies. Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 4l showing the wreath form covered with rornamental roping. Fig. 6 is a cross sectional' view taken along the lines 6 6 of Fig. 5, and Figs. 7 to 11 inclusive illustrate modifications of the wreath form.
The Sheet of materials from which the `preferred form of wreath form is produced is illustrated in. Fig. 1, .and consists of a layer of card board like material 12 provided with a coating of glue 13 on its upper surface and a similar coatingof glue 14 on its lower surface. ln order to maire the card board more flexibleV and pliable it may be moistened with water before the coatings of. glue are applied. A sheet of impervious paper 15 is then placed over the coating of glue 13, and a circular buckram or rice net piece 16 placed over the coating of glue 14. This buclrram or rice net is circular in shape and has a diameter which is slightlT greater than the inside diameter of the completed wreath form. A coating'of glue 17 is then applied to the exposed surface ofthe buck-ram and thelayer of impervious paper 18 placed over the last mentioned glued surface and the' glued surfaceof thecard board 12 left uncovered by the buchi-am. @n account of the' moisture contained in the glue the card board is rendered liexible and pliable, and while it is-still moist it is placed upon the male die 19 and. formed by hand around the annular portion 2O of the die. This manual forming of the sheet of materials is desirable in order to first form the sheet into approximately the shape desired and to fold over the excess material as indicated at 21-21 in Fig. l. The male die 19 contains a chamber which is heated by gas', steam or any other suitable means. After the sheet of materials has been pressed around the male die 19 by hand, the wooden block 23 is inserted on the inner side of the ridge 20, as illustrated in Fig. 3, andthe female vinto the shape of the annular ridge 2O of the 'male die. The die members are, held in closed position until the heat of the die 19 hardens the several coatings of glue on the sheet and makes the glue stiff and rlgid.
The dies are then separated and the partlyv completed wreath form removed.
Attention is called to the fact that on account Yof the impervious layers of paper 15 .and 18 the glue is prevented from adhering to the die members when the dies are separated. When the formis removed from the dies the inner flat portion 24: and the flange 2 5are cut out by means of a knife or a pair of scissors. The buckram layer Iprevents tearing of the card board when the sheet is placed between the dies and in the preferred construct-ion lies only Ion the inside of the completed form, as illustrated in Fig. 10,
and serves to reinforce this-portion of the form. To reinforce the outer edge of the form a wire 25 may besewed around the outer periphery of the form F 1g. 10).
Figs. 5 and 6 illustrate one form` of ornamentation which may be placed upon the lcompleted wreath form. 1, The ornamentaltion'illustrated in the drawing'consists of colored roping 26 wound'around the form and fixed thereto in any suitable-manner to prevent removal thereof. The Wreath form may, of course, be used for flowers, etc., 1n
that the card board like material is protected from `the moisture of the flowers by means of the layers of impervious paper glued aroundthe outside of the form.
Fig. illustrates a modification whereinl the buckram or rice net 16 extendsentirely across the form and reinforces the entire senitcircular cross section thereof'.l The buekram or rice .net also prevents the ornamental roping from cutting into or tearing the card board when it is wound around the form.
In Fig. 8 buckram or rice net is eliminated and only the card board, coats of glue and layers of impervious material employed.
Fig. 9 illustrates a modification wherein a wire binding is employed at 26 around the outer edge of the form and a reinforcing piece of card board 80, and a layer of paper 81 over the card board sewed to and around the inner edge of the form.
Fig. 10 illustrates in detail the construction of the form shown in Fig. Ll, and in addition thereto a wire binding around the outer edge of the form.
In Fig. 11 the inner edge'ds reinforced by a rice net collar 27 carrying the wire binding 28. This colla-r 2T is sewed to the layers of card board and paper and serves to reinforce:
form a rigid article but could be easily bent,
torn or broken, or it would become fiat or gliable if it were subjected to moisture.
ince, however, the layers 15 and 18 are employed outside of the coatings of glue a very stiff' and rigid structure is obtained, the layers 15 and 18 combining with the glue to kecip the card board in the shape of the artic e.
Although I have described the layers 15 and 18 as being preferably made of impervious paper, I wish it to be understood that cloth or any other reinforcing material may be employed, although impervious paper has its advantages in that moisture is positively prevented from entering the card board.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the UnitedStates, :is:
1. The manufacture of* hollow articles sheet is around the form and after the sheet is formed into the shape of the hollow article.
2. The manufacture of 'hollow articles which consists in applying a coating of glue to bothsides of a sheet of card board like material, laying a sheet 'of paper over the glue on bot-h sides of the card board and pressing the sheet of materials while still moist around a heated form, whereby the 'glue is dried while the sheet is on the form and after the sheet yis formed `into the shape of the hollow article.
3. A wreath form of substantially semis circular crosssection comprising super-imposed layers of paper, card board, buckram and paper, in the order given, glued together to form a rigid structure.
4. A wreath form of substantially semicircular cross section comprising super-imposed layers of paper, card board, rice net and paper, in the order given, glued together to formk a rigid structure.
5. A wreath form of substantially semicircular cross section comprising super-imposed layers of paper, card board, buckram and paper, in the order given, glued together to form a rigid structure, -and wire binding around the outer` edge of the form.
6. A Wreath form of substantially semicircular cross section comprising super-iin posed layers 0f paper, card board, rice net and paper, in the order. given, glued together to form a rigid structure, and wire binding around the outer'edge of the form. ,Y
7. A wreath form of .-substantially semicircular cross section comprising super-inn posed layers of paper, card board like material and paper, in the order given, glued together to form a rigid structure, and wire binding around the outer edge of the form. ',8. The manufacture of wreath forms which consists in applying a coating of glue to both sides of a sheet of card board, placing a sheet of paper over one of the gluedy l sides, placing a layer of buckram on the other glued side, coating the upper surface of the buckram with glue, placing a layer of paper over the glued surface of the buckram and pressing the sheet of materials while still moist between two heated dies, whereby the glue is dried while the sheet is between the dies and after the sheet is formed into the 'shape of the wreath form.
9. The manufacture of wreath forms of substantially .semi-circular cross section, which consists in applying a coating of glue to both sides of a sheet of card board, placing the sheet of paper on one of the 'glued sides, laying a circular piece of buckrani over the other glued side, the diameter of the buckram piece being slightly greater than the inside diameter of the completed wreath form, so as to reinforce only the inner side of the form, coating the upper surface of the buclrram, placing a layer of paper over the buckram and the straw board uncovered by the buckram, and pressing the sheet of materials while still moist between two heated dies, whereby the glue is dried while the sheet is between the dies and after the sheet is formed into the shape of the HYMAN B.
