To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. LAKE, a citizen of the United States, and resident of the town of Rumford, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gas-Burners for Water-Heaters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to gas burners of the class particularly adapted for use in stoves or water heaters designed for domestic purposes, and the object of this invention is to provide an improved burner of this character which is of a very simple and practical construction and owing to its particular shape and arrangement of parts, it is adapted to produce a very high heating efficiency to rapidly raise the temperature of the water passing through the heating chamber.
A further object of the invention is to construct a burner open on one of its faces and to provide a plate for covering this open portion whereby its manufacture is greatly facilitated and the inside of the burner may be readily opened for inspection and cleaning. Then again by this construc tion of open back burner the same may be struck up from sheet stock thereby reducing the cost of manufacture to the minimum.
lVith these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, as will be more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1- is a side elevation partly in section of the water heater with my improved burner attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the under side of the burner with the back plate removed therefrom. Fig. 3 is a sectional end elevation on line 33 of Fig. 2 looking in the direction of the arrow. Fig. 1- is a perspective view of the bottom plate used for covering the back of the burner. Fig. 5 is a face view of the inlet end of the burner.
Referring to the drawings, 10 designates the frame or body portion of my improved burner which may be constructed of cast metal or struck up from sheet stock if desired. vided with air inlet ports 13 through its face, it is also provided with a hub 14: into which the supply control cook 15 is set.
The frame is provided with a central longitudinal channel 16 and two parallel side channels 17 and 18 spaced on opposite sides of the middle channel with openings 19 and 20 respectively between. All of the three channels are connected at one end by the transverse channel 21, and the two outer channels are connected at their opposite end by the transverse channel 22, the middle channel at this point being closed against the free passage of the entering gas through the neck 11, by a partition or bafile plate 23. A multiplicity of jet openings 24 are arranged in rows about the burner-communicating with the different channels, rows 25 and 26 along the opposite outer channels, and rows 27 and 28 along the inner channel, rows 25 and 27 and rows 26 and 28 being perched or set on a slight incline toward each other, whereby the jet flames from each row meet at a given distance above the jet openings and there spread and diffuse their heat over the water chamber 29, see Fig. 1.
The partition or baffle plate 23 is for the purpose of deflecting the gas stream and as it enters through the neck 11 causes it to divide part passing around through the channel 17 and a part around and through the channel 18 both flowing bodies meeting in the transverse channel 21 and passing up the middle channel 16, the gas in its flow passing through the various jet burners, the flow being suflicient and the channels being of a size so that all of the jets are supplied with a substantially equal amount of gas whereby they all burn with an equal force and to an equal height.
It is found in practice that this baffle plate is of utmost importance to provide the absolutely necessary result of having all of the burners provided with an equal amount of gas, and in order to effect this result, I have provided a small hole or port 30 through the baffle plate directly in line with the supply neck which permits a small portion of the gas to pass therethrough and prevent a dead end, or dead space back ofthis plate where there would otherwise be no circulation. It is found in practice that if no hole is formed through the plate that a certain number of the jets in the center channel back of the plate would not be supplied with a sufficient amount of gas. In practice it is found very desirable to form this frame With an open back and to provide a plate 31 for covering the same, this plate being held in position by suitable screws 32 whereby itmay be readily removed for inspecting and cleaning the inside of the burner. Then. again by this construction the burner may be struck up from sheet metal if desired thereby reducing the cost of construction to the'minimum.
When the burner is positioned inthestove and the whole connected up the water enters the chamber 29 through the supply pipe 33 and the cook 34 and the gas enters the burner through the supply pipe 35 and the cook 15. Both of these cocks 34 and 15 are connected together by the stem 36 and are operated in unison by movement of the single handle 37 whereby the water is always turned on simultaneously With the gas so as to positively prevent a burning out of the water chamber which sometimes occurs where the cocks are turned separately and the operator omits to turn on the water with the heat.
I. have described and'illustrated one embodiment of my invention but the details of construction may be varied, the scope of the invention is defined and limited only by the appended claims.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for I claim: 1. A burner for gas stoves comprising a rectangular frame having an inlet neck portwo spaced apart side channels each having orifices communicating with said channel, the opposing jets being on an angle toward each other, a baflie plate closing the center channel from the inlet neck end, said bafile plate being provided with a vent hole to stimulate circulation in the center channel, and a removable plate covering the back side of each channel.
