FRICTIONAL GEARING.

Specification of Letters Patent. Y
Patented Aug. 8, i916.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known thatA I, SAuUnL W. WOMBLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Gheriton, in the county of Northampton and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Frictional Gearing; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings', and to the letters and figures of reference ymarked thereon, which form a part of this specication.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in apparatus for automatically feeding staves to cutting saws and coni-x prises a simple and eliicient apparatus of this nature so arranged that the speed at which the feed travels may be regulated.
The invention comprises various details of construction, combinations and arrangements of parts which will be hereinafter fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings and then specifically defined in the appended claim.
I illustrate my invention in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a top .plan view of my improved automatic stave feeding apparatus. Fig. 2 is a sectional view on line Q Qlof Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line 3 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a sectional view on line ll of Fig. l. Figs. 5 and 6 are detail views respectively on lines 5 5 and 6 6 of Fig. l, and Fig. 7 is a detail view on line 7 7 of Fig.` 6. Fig. 8 is a view of the lever mechanism.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates one end of the feeding table of a stave making machine which is adapted to have a reciprocating movement to bring the stave in contact with the saw. As the stave machine itself forms no part of the present invention, only one end of the feedingk table is illustrated in the drawings. Mounted upon a suitable frame B is a driving shaft C having a pulley C fixed thereto and which is driven by means of a belt D from any suitable source of power, not shown. l
E designates a disk which is splined to the shaft C and has an integral collar E with an annular groove therein for the reception of the swivel ring H which is engaged by the pins I carriedby the yoke J forming a part of the Vlever F, which latter is pivoted upon a pin F to the frame. Through the medium of the lever F, it will be noted that the diskmay be moved longitudinally upon the driving shaft C and cause said disk to move across the surface of the frictionally driven disk K which is fastened by means of a screw K to the shaft L, journaled in the boxings L. Said driving shaft C, it will benoted, is mounted in boxings N and Ng'which have elongated slots N therein which are engaged by the bolts Q, Q and screws F are mounted in the lugs P upon the frame and serve as means for holding the boxing N in an adjusted position. The boxing N2, it will be noted is spring-pressed, being actuated by the spring It which bears against the lug R upon the frame and the adjacent endof the boxing. By this means,
it will be noted, that the end of the shaft carrying 'the' disk E is adapted to have a slight swinging movement for the purpose of throwing the disk E out of contact withY the disk K, the springwR serving to norpialy hold the two disks in frictional conac .f
The means for throwing the disk E out of contact with the disk K consists of a lever T which is pivotally mounted upon a pin T and has a cam T2 at one end thereof, which cam is adapted to contact with the adjacent edge of the spring-pressed bearing boxing N2 when the lever T is tilted in one direction.
Fastened to the shaft L is a crank arm L2 which has a boxing L3 pivoted thereto, a detail of which is shown in Fig. 6 of the drawings, and in which cushions L4 are illustrated intermediate the end of the boxing and the end of the pitinan NV, crank pin L7 passing through a shell L(3 mounted between said cushions Lt. A pin J, which is tapering as shown clearly in Fig. 6 of the drawings, passes through registering apertures in the opposite walls of the boxing and through a tapering hole formed in the pitman W and has a nut J upon its threaded end. Said pin J is formed tapering for the purpose of taking up wear intermediate the points.
The forward end of the pitinan W is provided with an eye W which has pivotal connection with a rod X upon the feeding carriage Y, shown clearly in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings.
The operation of my invention will be The readily understood and is as follows: spring R will normally hold the two disks in frictional contact with each other so that, when the shaft C is rotated, a continuous rotary movement Will be imparted to the shaft L and the feeding carriage will be reciprocated through the connections intermediate said carriage and shaft L, which consists of the pitman WV and the crank L2. In order to prevent jar to the feeding table as it reaches its limit in opposite directions, the cushions will take up vibration and 'prevent pounding of the machine. The speed at which it may be desired to cause the feeding table to operate may be regulated by the lever F which, by swinging the same, may cause the disk E to contact with the disk K at different locations intermediate the center and circumference of the latter. When it is desired to throw the disks out of connection with each other, it may be done through the medium of the lever T having a cam at one end thereof which, when the lever is swung, will cause the boxing N2 to be moved against the tension of the spring R.
What I claim to be new is A stave sawefeeding apparatus for stave machines comprising a frame and a rotatable driven shaft mounted'in suitable bearings thereon and designed to drive Va, stave'feeding carriage, al disk Xed to said shaft, a plate secured to said frame and having angled ends, set screws mounted in apertures in said angled ends, a boxing having slotted wings mounted upon said plate and against the ends of which wings said screws are adapted to bear, bolts carried by the frame and passing through saidV plate and slots, a second beL ring plate, a sliding boxing upon the frame and bolts carried by the latter and passing through slots in the sliding boxing,
a sorino' bearing ieldin l afainst the latl s s y g Y e ter, a driving shaft journaled in said boxings and designed to have a slight tilting movement against the tension of said spring, a friction disk splined to the driving shaft and adapted to engage the disk upon the driven shaft.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afHX my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
SAMUEL W. INOMBLE.
