In my electrode the travel of the arc laterally is a distance equal to the shortest radius of the electrode, that is, from the focal axis ii'\ to the points 7, and the divergence of the rays of light out of parallelism with the focal axis of the lens or reflector is confined to a minimum angle indicated by the angle A, I), (Z. Thus by forming the elec trode oblong in cross section an electrode is produced having the same proportion of conducting metal and metallic oxid as in a cylindrical electrode of practically the same cross sectional area.
By the term oblong in general outline in cross section applicant means any form having long and short diameters arranged at an angle to each other.
What I claim is:
1. In an arc lamp equipped with a tocusing element, two electrodes arranged in superimposed relation, and with the arcing ends thereof on opposite sides of the focal axis of said element, said electrodes being of dissimilar cross-sectional area, and the electrode of smaller area being of greater dimensions in the direction of one transverse axis than in the direction of its other transverse axis, said. longer axis being disposed in the direction of said focal axis of the focusing element, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. In an arc lamp the combination with a focusing element, of a metallic positive elec 'trode and a slow consuming luminous negative electrode arranged beneath the metallic electrode, and on the opposite side of the focal axis of said focusing element, said metallic electrode being larger in cross-sectional area than the negative, and the latter being substantially oblong in cross-section and arranged with its longer transverse axis substantially parallel to the focusing axis of said focusing element, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
