IMPROVEMENTIN DEVICES FUR SECURING HENIMEHS, Zac., T0 SEWING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 119,350, dated September 26, 18771.
clamp. Fig. 2 is a like view of a corder similarly constructed and conned, and Fig. 3 is an edge view of said clamp.
Letters of like name and kind refer to ,like parts in each of the iigures.
The object of my invention is the production of a device, by means of which the various attachments'for sewing-machines may be secured to or upon the same, and which shall be equally applicable to any machine; and to this end, it consists in the peculiar construction of the slotted spring-clamp, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter specified.
In the annexed drawing, A represents a clamp formed of or from a single strip of sheet metal doubled togetherat its longitudinal center, at which point is left an opening, a,nearly.cy1indrical,forthe reception of a corresponding rod, B. When not confined the ends of the clamp spring slightly apart, so as to increase the dimensions transversely ofthe op ening a and permit Of the insertion therein Of a rod having a somewhat greater diameter than that of said opening when closed, so that when said ends are closed together and conlined, the sides of vsaid opening shall press upon said rod with sufficient force to hold it firmlyin place. A slot, G, extending longitudinally and centrally om near the divided end of the clamp outward through its doubled end, completes the device, the operation of which is as follows:
The hemmer D,.corder E, or other attachment being provided with a round horizontal arm or rod, B, in place of the usual fiat slotted arm, said' rod is inserted within the clamp and the latter confined to or upon the horizontal plate of the machine by means of a screw passing through the slot C, with its head bearing upon the upper side of said clamp and its lower end fitting into a corresponding threaded opening in said plate. As thus arranged, by loosening the screw the clamp and rod will be released, so as to permit lthe attachment to be adjusted to the desired position, after which the whole are confined in place by the tightening of said screw.
It will be seen that, by means of the slot in the clamp and of the sliding rod secured to the attachment, a sufficient variation can be made in the relative positions of the parts tO enable them to be secured to or upon the plate of any sewingmachine, so as thereby to render but one style of attachment necessary, instead, as heretofore, of a different style for each kind of machine; by which means greater convenience is obtained and the expense of the attachment is materially lessened. If desired, the rod B and the opening. within the doubled end of the clamp may be made square, oblong, Oval, or may have any other transverse shape deemed best; but as such variations would be modifications only of my invention it is considered unnecessary to illustrate the same.
Having thus fully set forth the nature and merits of my invention, what I claim as new, is-
The clamp A, constructed as shown, and combined with the bar or arm B of an attachment for sewing-machines and with a suitable thumbscrew for confining the same to or upon the horizontal plate of a machine, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 29th day of August, 1871.
HENRY M. HALL.
