UNITED STATES ATENT QFFICE- JOHN w. GRAHAM, OF OHILLIOOTHE, OHIO.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 119,347, dated September 26, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, JOHN W. GRAHAM, of Chillicothe, in the county of Boss and State of Ohio, have invented certain Improvements in Lamp-Posts, of which the following is a specification:
My invention relates to the provision of eficient devices to draw Off or remove the condensed vapors or other impurities from the sedimentchamber, which would otherwise rapidly accumulate and iinally obstruct the loW of gas, or by its presence injure the quality of the gas, or by freezing burst the chamber and allow the gas to escape, with all the other attendant evils.

Fig. 2 is a perspective ofthe base of the post, showing the position of the sedimentchamber B, pipe C, faucet or stop-cock D, service-pipe E, and orifice F.
In ordinary lamp-posts an elongated aperture is made in the base of the post to allow of the introduction of the service-pipe. This aperture generally passes through the post at right angles to its vertical axis. The sediment-chamber B is intended to be introduced into this aperture and extend outside of the post on one or both sides, as may be convenient, the object being to increase the capacity of the sedimentchamber to any required extent; or the sedimentehamber may be Wholly insideof the post A. At D I provide a stop-cock having a tube or pipe, G, extending from the plug to the surface of the ground, and provided with a proper stopper or cover, as shown at H. This tube is to permit the introduction of a key to open or closethe faucet or stop-cock. At G is a tube extending also to the surface of the ground, With proper stopper or cap. This tube is for the application of a siphon, pump, or other apparatus to remove the accumulations in the sediment-chamber the same as the faucet D. At F is an Orifice with proper stopper7 also shown as another device, for the introduction of a pump or the like to free the sediment-chamber of sediment and condensation. These devices I do not claim of themselves, but only in connection with the sediment-chamber.
At E is shown the service-pipe, leading from the main and entering the post or chamber some distance above the bottom, as originally shown in my improved lamp-post patented May'25, 1869, and for a similar purpose, viz.: To provide a drip or sediment-chamber below the point where the gas enters the post, so the accumulations Will not run back into the service-pipe or the main and obstruct the same, and prevent the gas freezing and closing the passage to the burner, while the gas is rendered purer, tending to produce a purer light and prevent the corrosion and obstruction ofthe burner. The sediment-chamber B has tapped into it at K the Ordinary pipe leading to the burner, or the entire body of the post may be used as a passage for the gas, as shown in my former patent of May 25, 1869.
I claim as my invention- The sediment-chamber B, provided with means for removing the condensed vapors or other impurities from the chamber, substantially as described.
