FIRE-LINING- FOR STOVES.
Application filed September 27, 1913.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BERTRAM B. CULvnn, a citizen of the United States of America, residing in the city of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fire-Linings for Stoves, of which the following is a specification.
One of the objects of this invention is to provide a fire lining of improved construction for the combustion chambers of stoves, which will be more durable against heat than linings heretofore, and will not be so liable to crack.
Another object is to provide a fire lining with a greater air circulating area.
Other and further objects will appear in the specification, and be specifically pointed out, reference being had to the accompanying drawings exemplifying the invention, and in which,
Figure 1 is a fragmentary sectional view of a portion of a stove showing this improved fire lining applied thereto. Fig. 2 is an enlarged front elevation of this improved fire lining. Fig. 3 is an enlarged rear elevation of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings: 1 designates a fragmentary portion of a stove; 2 the combustion chamber; and 3 the products of combustion passageway leading from said combustion chamber. Located at one side of the combustion chamber 2 is an oven 4: having a top wall 5 and a front wall 6. Transversely mounted in the combustion chamber 2 is a grate bar support 7 on which is mounted the usual grate bars 8. Formed in said support 7 is a channel 9, said channel being for the reception of the lower end of a rear fire lining 10, the upper end of said fire lining being adapted to' rest on the top wall 5 of the oven 4;, as shown at 11. This improved fire lining is preferably con structed in sections, each section comprising a body portion 12. Formed on the front side of said body portion 12 are a series of staggered lugs 13, each of said lugs being recessed at the top, as shown at 1 1. Formed on the rear side of said body portion 12 are a series of staggered lugs 15, said lugs 15 having an ofiset location from the lugs 13. Formed with the top of said body portion is a rearwardly extending lip 16, said Specification of Letters Patent.

lip forming a rest for each section of fire lining against the top wall 5 of the oven at. When a number of these fire lining sections are mounted in the combustion chamber, as shown in Fig. 1, an air chamber 17 is formed between the fire lining and the front wall 6 of the oven. Said air chamber communicates with the ashpit (not shown) through the opening 18.
It has been found from experience that fire linings having a series of lugs formed on one side have a tendency to crack between the lugs. Also, fire linings which have no lugs, but only a solid body portion, burn and warp. This improved fire lining, having lugs formed on both sides of the body portion 12, (said lugs on one side being staggered in relation to the position of the lugs formed on the other side,) eliminates the cracking of said lining as said lugs provide means for reinforcing the body portion.
The lugs 15 which are formed on one side of the body portion 12, and which extend into the air chamber 17, provide means for giving greater radiating surface to the body portion 12 of said fire lining. The recesses 1d, formed on top of the lugs 13, will serve as rests for ashes which are caused by the fire in the combustion chamber. The spaces between said lugs 13 will eventually fill with ashes. Said ashes will act somewhat as an insulation against extreme heat to the body portion of said lining.
What I claim is:
1. In a stove, a combustion chamber, a fire lining located in said combustion chamber, a series of lugs formed on each side of said lining, an air chamber formed in said stove on one side of said lining, said lugs on one side of said lining adapted to protrude into said air chamber, said lugs on the opposite side of said lining adapted to protrude into said combustion chamber, recesses formed in said combustion chamber lugs, said recesses of said lugs serving as depositing place for the reception of products of combustion from said combustion chamber.
