J OHNSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Con ecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Firearms; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the characters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this applica tion, and represent, in

My invention relates to an improvement in firearms, the object being to provide improved means for securing the forearm and barrel-cover in place, as well as to provide improved means for securing the forestock to the barrel against longitudinal displacement.
With these ends in view, my invention consists in a firearm having certain details of construction as will be hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
In carrying out my invention as herein shown, I employ a forestock-lock consisting of a sleeve 2 having a depending lug 8. For the reception of this look the gun-barrel at is formed near its rear end with a cylindrical portion 5 corresponding in length to the Fig. 5
' length of the sleeve 2 which fits snugly over it.
The said depending lug 3 of the lock, is formed with a beveled rear face 6 and with a threaded bore 7 the inner or upper end of which receives a small screw 8 the reduced shank 9 of which enters a recess 10 formed in the center of the under face of the cylindrical Specification of Letters Patent.

The threaded bore 7 of the lug 3 also receives a screw 11 con siderably longer than the screw 8 aforesaid and passed upward into it through a vertical opening 12 formed in the forestock 13 and having its lower end enlarged for the recep tion of a cup-shaped escutcheon 1% into which the head of the screw is entered. The said screw 11 is preferably made short enough, as clearly shown in Fig. 1, to permit its head to enter the opening 12 sulficiently far to clear it from the exterior surface of the forestock 13 so that the hand of the user of the arm cannot touch it, whereby the user of the arm is prevented from burning his hand by contact with the head of the screw after the gun has become heated by repeated firing. The lug 3 aforesaid, enters a recess 15 formed in the upper face of the forestock 13 and having its rear face beveled as at 16 to conform to the beveled rear face 6 of the lug, which permits the application of the forestock after the barrel has been screwed into the receiver 17, the forestock being at the same time forced rearward by the camming of the surfaces 6 and 16.
For securing the rear end of the forestock 13 in place, as well as the rear end of the barrel-cover 18, I form a shallow recess 19 in the front face of the receiver-extension 20 which as shown herein is screwed in the usual manner upon the forward end of the receiver 17. The said recess 19 is inclosed by. an integral continuous, forwardly extending flange 21 the inner face of which is slightly beveled and which receives the tapered tennon 22 at the rear end of the fore stock 13 and a tapered tennon 23 at the rear end of the barrel-cover 18. The central and forward portions, respectively, of the forestock 13 and the barrel-cover 18 are held in place upon the gun-barrel at by means of a middle band-24: and a bayonet band 25, these being of any approved construction. At its forward end, the barrel as herein shown, is formed with an integral wide shoulder 26 from the upper portion of which rises a sight-base 27 for the application of a sight 28. Under this construction, it is only nec essary to carefully machine or finish the extreme forward end 29 of the barrel for the application of the bayonet, whereby it becomes unnecessary to as accurately machine the remainder of the barrel around the sight lug as is generally done.
I claim 1. In a firearm, the combination with the barrel thereof, of a receiver having an extension formed in its forward face with a shallow recess encircled by a forwardly projecting flange, and a barrel-cover and a forestock respectively formed at their rear ends with tennons adapting them to enter the said recess and fit within the said flange.
2. In a firearm, the combination with the barrel and receiver thereof, of a receiverextension screwed upon the receiver and formed in its forward face with a shallow recess encircled'by a forwardly projecting flange, and a barrel-cover and a forestock respectively formed at their rear ends with tennons adapting them to enter the said recess and fit within the said flange.
3. In a firearm, the combination with. a gun-barrel formed with a cylindrical portion located forward of its rear end, of a forestock, a forestock-lock comprising a sleeve adapted to fit the said cylindrical portion of the barrel and formed with a depending lug having a threaded bore, and a screw passing upward through the forestock and entering the said lug for securing the forestock to the said forestook-lock.

In a firearm, the combination with the barrel thereof, of a forestock formed in its upper face with a recess, a foresteck-lock consisting of a sleeve adapted to fit over the said barrel and formed with a depending lug having a threaded bore and adapted to fit into the said recess, a screw located in the upper or inner end of the said threaded bore and engaging with the barrel for fixing the said sleeve thereupon, and a screw passing upward through the forestock from the lower face thereof and entering the said lug for securing the forestock to the forestocln lock.
5. In a fireain, the combination with the barrel thereof, of a forestock having in its upper face recess the rear wall of which is beveled, a forestock-lock consisting of a sleeve adapted to fit over the said barrel and having a depending lug adapted to enter the said recess and formed with a threaded bore and having its rear face beveled, a screw located in the upper or inner end of the said bore and entering a recess in the gun-barrel for securing the forestock-loek thereto, and a screw passing upward through the fore stock and entering the bore of the said lug for securing the forestock to the said forestock-lock.
6. In a firearm, the combination with a gun-barrel formed near its rear end with a cylindrical portion, of a forestock formed in its upper face with a recess, a forest-ochlock comprising a sleeve adapted to fit the said cylindrical portion of the barrel and formed with a depending lug adapted to enter the said recess in the forestoek and having a threaded bore, and screws adapted to enter the said threaded bore of the lug and respectively securing the forestoclnlcck to the barrel and the forestock to the forestock-lock.
