To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS C. JoHNsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Firearms; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the characters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this application, and represent in- Figure 1, a broken view in side elevation of a gun constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2, a broken detached view in side elevation of the front end of the receiver of the gun. Fig. 3, a view of the receiver in vertical transverse section on the line a?) of Fig. 2, looking forward toward the rear face of the depending abutment-lug. Fig. 4., a view of the receiver in front elevation. Fig. 5, a broken detached view in side elevation of the rear end of the gun-barrel. Fig. 6, a view in front elevation of the buttstock. My invention relates to an improvement in that class of small arms known as takedown arms from their adaptability to have the barrel and forearm detached from the receiver at the pleasure of the user of the gun, the object being to provide simple and efi'ective take-down means.
WVith these ends in view, my invention consists in a take-down gun having certain details of construction and combination of parts as will be hereinafter described and pointed out in the claim.
In carrying out my invention as herein shown, I employ a vertically movable takedown screw 2 having an enlarged threadedportion 3 and-a head 4, this screw being entered into a suitable downwardly-opening counter-bore formed to receive it in a large abutment-lug 5 preferably made integral with, and projecting in front of and also depending from, the front end of the receiver 6 which may in other respects be of any suit able construction. When in its home position, the rounded upper end of the said takedown screw 2 enters a circular socket or recess 7 formed in the lower edge of a collar 8 interposed betweenthe rear end of the barrel 9 and the threaded shanklO thereof, the said shank being entered as usual into a correspondingly threaded opening 11 in the forward end of the receiver 6. When the shank 10 is screwed home in the opening 11, the collar 8 is brought into the vertical plane of the projecting forward portion of the abutment-lug 5 the upper end of which is cut away to form a semi-circular clearance recess 24 for the clearance of the said collar 8, the lower edge of which is thus brought into position to be engaged by the takedown screw 2 at a point in front of the threaded shank 10 of the barrel. When the take-down screw 2 is reversed into its takedown position, its rounded upper end clears the socket 7 in the collar 8 and permits the barrel 9 to be unscrewed from the receiver, the screw 2 being at this time held in place by means of a retaining-pin 12 mounted in the extreme lower end of the lug 5 as shown in Fig. l and engaging with the adjacent lower edge of the enlarged threaded-portion 3 of the said screw. The gun-barrel 9 is provided with a forearm 13 firmly secured to it by any of the well known means, the rear end of the said forearm just clearing the forward face of the heavy abutment-lug 5. As shown, the said face is formed with a shallow recess 14 which lightens the arm and adapts it to be converted into an arm of the non-take-down type if desired. It is not, however, necessary that the abutmentlug 5 should be furnished with the recess 14:. As shown, the fiat rear face 15 of the abutment 5 is formed with long shallow cuts 16 symmetrically located on opposite sides of its center for the reception of corresponding tenons 17 produced upon the forward end of the butt-stock 18 which is thus supported by the abutment-lug 5, the exterior contour of which conforms to the exterior contours of the adjacent ends of the forearm 13 and the butt-stock 18, so that the said lug forms a virtual continuation of each of the said parts. As shown, the abutment-lug 5 is formed with a rearwardly extending horizontal finger 19 having a threaded counterbore 20 for the reception of a fasteningscrew 21 passing through the forward end of the guard 22 which is thus fastened to the it to be screwed into the said receiver and also provided with a collar located in front of the said threaded shank in position to be registeredwi th the projecting forward end of the said abutment-lug when the barrel is screwed home, and a take-down screw mounted in the said lug and adapted to be engaged with the collar of the barrel for preventing the barrel from turning.
