IMPRCVEMET IN APPARATUS` FOR ELEVAT`ING HODS.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it' known that I GEORGE W. BROWN, of
the city and State of eW York, have invented open ends ofthe hods, and forks upon the lower i ,ends of the handles to set against the chain,as
in Letters Patent No. 117 ,140.
My invention is made for giving greater facilities in handling the hods and in moving the apparatus from one place to another.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is an elevation of my improved apparatus, and Fig. 2 is aperspective view of the hod.
rllhe loWer chain-Wheel a is supported upon a shaft, o, in a frame, b, of suitable construction, and the upper chain-Wheel d is of a similar character to the Wheel a. y The power to revolve these Wheels a and d may be of any desired character and applied to either the shaft c or e. The frame f is provided for the boxes of the shaft e, and this frame fis sustained at the desired height above the base g by means of columns h made `of gas tubing screwed into sockets at the top and bottom. By this construction a very strong framing can be made that Will not .be injured by the concussionto Which it is often exposed, and the frame4 can be taken apart by unscrewing the columns, or,being light, can be moved With facility from` place" to place. The chain I is to be made With links of any desired character, and the projections of the chain-Wheels iit the chain.
In cases Where the hod is hooked at one end to the chain, as in the aforesaid patent, the hodcarrier experiences difficulty in handling his hod, both in hooking and unhooking the same, because his hands have to be placed near the shank of the hod, and the end of the hod upon which the hook is attached is considerably elevated When being hoisted, and the shoulder cannot easily be brought beneath the same to lift off the hod. To avoid these difficulties I attach the hook z" at one side of the hod near the middle of the same, so that the hod-carrier can seize the hodl With both hands near the ends and easily lift the same to hook the same'upon the chain or remove it therefrom. The fork r at the loWer end of the shank s serves to steady the hod, as in aforesaid patent.
To prevent any portion ofthe contents falling out of the hod, I make the samewith tWo ends u o, as seen in Fig. 2.
I claim as my invention- 1. The movable frame for the upper chain- Wheel of a hed-elevating apparatus, made with Wrought-iron tubes between the top frame and the base, as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The hook i', applied near the middle of the hod at one side thereof, as and for the purposes set forth.
3. The tWo-ended hod, provided with a hook on one side near the middle, and a fork at the `lower end of the shank, as and for the purposes set forth. p
