Bc it known that l, HORACE MANN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Muskegon, in the county of Muskegon and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful lmprovements in iliutomatic Locomotive Boiler- Compound Feeders; and l do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eXact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
rll`his invention relates to an automatic boiler compound feederl adapted to be interposed in the feed pipe leading from the injector to the boiler of a locomotive.
rlhe invention is especially adapted for use with railroad locomotive boilers and includes constructions and arrangements of parts permitting the automatic feed of a boilercompound in solution to the interior of a boiler as water is injected into the boiler.
An object and purpose of my invention is to provide in a device of this character, a very simple yet efficient construction and in which valves and other like adjustable parts are practically eliminated so as to require little or no attention. i
Other objects and purposes consisting in novel constructions and functions of parts will be apparent as understanding` is had of the embodiment disclosed in the accompanying drawing, in which;
Figure 1 is a vertical section taken lengthwise of the device. Fig. 2 is an end view thereof; and Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
Like reference characters refer tao like parts throughout the several views of the drawing.
The boiler feed pipe leading from the injector to the boiler is indicated at 1. The device comprising my invention is interposed in the length of this pipe and includes a sleeve 2, into the' ends of which the ends of pipes 1 are threaded, and a chamber 3 above the sleeve, a partition 4 dividing the chamber from the sleeve as shown. This chamber is adapted to receive and contain any suitable bo-iler compound used for the purpose of dissolving scale already formed and preventing deposit of scale thereafter on the various surfaces in the boiler. The compound is introduced through an opening in the top of the chamber which may be closed Specicaton of Letters Patent.

A short conical tube 7 having a slightly larger diameter at its free end than at the other is connected to an elbow S which is secured to a pipe 9 passing vertically through the partition 4. By means of suitable connections 10 pipe 9 is attached to the curved pipe 11 projecting upwardly into the chamber 3 and then turned back upon itself, with its lower end passing through and connecting with the top of a box 12 cast integral with the partition 4. lThe sides of this boX are perforated at a plurality of places as shown at 13.
A vertical tube 14 is positioned a short distance from the curved pipe 11. Adjacent its lower end it is secured, through suitable connections 15, to a pipe 16 passing through the partition 4. A l'coupling or equivalent device 17 is secured to the lower end of pipe 16 and has a short tubular section 1S threaded into one end.` In its other end a funnel shaped member 19 is secured in place, the larger end of said member be ing presented toward the iow of water through sleeve 2, while at its other end it is formed into a tube 20 of comparatively small diameter, extending into the part 18. The tube 14 heretofore described, at its upper end is provided with a cap 21 which may be adjusted on the tube in any suitable inanner so as to vary the size of the passages into said tube through the openings 22 and Q8 in the tube and cap respectively to thereby control the amount of solution of boiler compound passing into the pipe.
In practice the chamber 3 is partially lled with a soluble boiler compound. When no water is passing through the feed pipe into the boiler no action takes place but during the time `that the injector is working and water is passing through the pipe, the boiler compound is introduced into the boiler. Vater passing through pipes 1 and sleeve 2 in the direction indicated by the arrow A :Hows at a high speed and a part of it entering the tube 7 is carried through the curved tube 11 into the box 12 being forced through the openings 13. The Water forced through the openings agitates the boiler compound and dissolves a portion of it filling the chamber 3. lThe solution thereupon passes through openings 22 and 23 into the tube 14 and down into the member. 17. Part of the feed water will also enter the enlarged end of member 19 and be forced through the restricted rear end 2O at a very high rate of speed carrying with it any liquid that may be in the members 17 and 18. In this manner the Vsolution of boiler compound is introduced into the water on its way to the boiler and any back pressure which might tend to prevent the iiow of the Lsolut-ion lof boiler compound out of the chamber 3 is overcome and eliminated by the increased velocity given to the water as it leaves the member 19 through the restricted end20.
`It will be apparent from this construction that I Vhave provided aV simple and economically manufactured device which may be interposed in the length of the feed-pipe to a locomotive boiler. It will also'be apparent that the locomotive boiler compound is inf troduced uniformly with the flow of water into thezboileriand that no introduction of the compound will take place except as water is injectedY into the boiler. vFurthermore this construction contains no parts liable to Vget out of order such as valves or the like and is fully capable of withstanding the severe conditions under which it will be subjected on locomotive boilers. n

In combination, a chamber adapted to contain a boiler compound, a sleeve Vbelow said chamber with va v partition between the chamber and sleeve, a perforated box 1n the lower part of the chamber, a curved conduit tube leading into the box at one end, passing through the-partition and at its other end turned substantially parallel tothe sleeve, a second conduit tube in the chamber passing throughthe partitioman adjusting device at the Vupper end of said tube, a tubular connection to the lower end thereof lying substantially parallel to the sleeve, and a funnel member inserted in and filling one end of the said connection, the reduced, end of said member extending conduittube. In combination, a chamber adapted to contain boiler compound, a sleeve formed integrally with the chamber adapted to be interposed in the feed pipe to a locomotive boiler, a perforated box in the chamber normally covered by the boiler compound in the chamber, means to force; a portion of the water passing through the feed pipe into the box and through the perforations thereof to thereby agitato and dissolve a portion of the boiler compound in the chamber, and means to carry the said water and compound in solution back into the sleeve, said means comprising a pipe extending from the chamber into the sleeve and a device secured at the lower end of said pipe positioned lengthwise of the sleevethrough which a portion of the wat-er in the feed pipe passes to create a suction to draw the boiler compound in solution from the chamber.

In combination, a chamber adapted to conta-in a. boiler compound, a sleeve below the chamber with a partition between the chamber and sleeve, said sleeve adapted to be interposed in the feed pipe to a locomotive boiler, a perforated box in the lower part of the chamber, a conduit in the chamber leading at one end into the box and at the other end through the partition, an extension to said conduit in the sleeve turned parallel to the sleeve and open in the direction from which the water flows in the feed pipe, a second conduit in the chamber through which the contents of the chamber may escape to the sleeve, the lower end of said conduit passing' through the partition, and means to create a suction at the lower end of said conduit within the sleeve, substantially as described.
