WITNE65E6. INVENTOR EDITH WINTON-CHARTERIS, OF LONDON, ENGLAND.
MASSAGE APPLIANCE.
Application filed June 8, 1915.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDITH WINTON-CHAR- TERIS, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at 215 Euston road, London, England, have invented a new and useful Massage Appliance, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in massage appliances and comprises two cups adapted to lie concentrically one within the other, the outerone being adapted to operate as a spreading or tension cup and the latter as a suction cup, and of means for imparting the necessary motion to the inner cup to make it function as a suction cup, and it has for its object to provide means whereby a sucking action can be imparted to the skin while same is held under slight tension. I attain this object by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 is a view in outside elevation, and Fig. 2 is a view in sectional elevation.
In both views similar parts are marked with like letters of reference.
The outer cup at, which is the spreading or tension cup, is provided at its apex with an opening shaped to form a guide I; in which a rod or piston 0 slides. On this rod or piston is mounted the inner or suction cup (1 which is of a smaller diameter than the outer cup a so that it can conveniently lie and be operated within the outer cup (11.. The rod or piston c is provided at its free or outer end, i. e. exterior to the outer cup a, with a suitably shaped knob or handle 0 to enable it to be manipulated to impart the necessary up and down pumping action to the inner or suction cup d.
The cups, which are of circular form, are made of rubber or like material, the flexibility of said cups being such as will allow the inner one to function as a suction cup and the outer one to function as a spreading or tension cup. The edges of both cups are preferably of beaded form. The guide I) may either be formed of hard rubber or vulcanite in one piece with the body of the cup at as shown, or it may take the form of an independent sleeve adapted to be fixed in Specification of Letters Patent.

any suitable manner to the apex of said cup. The rod or piston c and the knob or handle a may be of wood or other suitable material. To use the appliance, the spreading or tension cup a is placed over and pressed into contact with the spot to be treated so as to exert such a tension on the skin within the cup as will prevent same gathering. While held in this position the rod carrying the suction cup is by means of the rod 0 moved alternately inward and outward, whereby a pumping action is imparted to the cup which causes it to create a sucking action on the skin lying within the outer cup. This not only successfully removes lines from the skin but is found to lessen, and in some cases entirely remove, pain in circumscribed spots.
I am aware that double cups have already been used for massage purposes, and thatone of said cups has been employed as a suction cup, but such constructions have involved the use of separate and additional means for exhausting the air within the suction cup.
I wish it to be understood that I do not limit myself to the exact shape or relative sizes of the cups as illustrated in the accompanying drawing, but hold myself at liberty' to make such changes and alterations therein as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of my invention.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a massage appliance the combination with an outer cup, of a rod or piston mounted to slide axially in said cup, a flexible cup mounted on said rod or piston and adapted.
to lie and operate within the outer cup, and means for imparting a pumping action to the inner cup to make it function as a suction cup.
2. In a massage appliance the combination with an outer cup having a soft or flexible edge or rim, a rod or piston adapted to slide axially in relation to said cup, of an inner flexible cup carried by said. rod or piston, and means for imparting a pumping motion to said inner cup.
3. A massage appliance comprisng a cup having a soft beaded edge, a rod or piston 100 mounted to slide in a guide carried by said signed my name in the presence of two subcup, a flexible cup having a beaded edge said scriblng wltnesses.
cup being mounted on the end of said rod or piston Within the inflexible cup, and a knob EDITH WINTON'GHARTERIS' or handle carried by said rod or piston exte- Witnesses: rior to the outer cup. L. SAVORY,
In testimony whereof I have hereunto CHARLES E. VAGG.
