ESCAPEMENT FOR WATCHES.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES E. DE LONG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dallas, in the county of Dallas and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Esca-pements for \Vatches, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has relation to an escapement for watches or similar portable time pieces and in such connection it relates more particularly to a means whereby the lever or fork carrying the fixed jewels or pallets may be adjusted with relation to its pivotal support to take up or compensate for inaccuracies in the shape or location of the lever.
Heretofore, in watches of even the finer grade, the escapement levers designed to carry fixed pallets or jewels vary in a more or less degree from the mathematically fixed form, shape and location and it has heretofore been the usual custom in assembling the parts of the escapement to compensate for the inaccuracies, especially of location, by bending, twisting or otherwise manipulating the fork or lever or by adjustment of the pallets to compensate for such inaccuracies which might exist. In cheaper grades of watches where the forks or levers and the other parts were more or less roughly made the inaccuracies in the shape, and location were actually of less importance to correct since the accuracy of the time piece was not the first consideration in the sale of the.
watch. In finer grades however these inaccuracies are grave defects since they interfere with the proper operation of the movement in the keeping of accurate time.
In an application for patent filed by me under date of April 1st, 1915, Serial No. 18,170, I have shown and described a new form of escapement for watches wherein the fixed pallets project at right angles to the face of the fork or lever, said pallets having lifting angles cooperating with the lifting angles of a club tooth escape wheel. My present invention is particularly adapted for use with the type of pallet and fork illustrated in said former application although it may if desired be used in escapements where the fork or lever is provided with adjustable pallets or jewels.

eccentric relationship between arbor and lever may be of two fold character, the arbor being itself eccentrically pivoted or supported in its bearings and supported in an eccentric collar interposed between the eccentricarbor and the lever. In this form of double eccentricity it is obvious that all parts may be turned to concentric position or zero or the variations may be increased in a plus direction or decreased in a minus direction by the proper manipulation of both eccentric elements of the support for the lever.
The nature and scope of my invention will be more fully understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, in which,

Fig. 2, is a cross-sectional view enlarged of the fork or lever illustrated in Fig. 1, and Figs. 3, and 4, are views corresponding to Fig. 2 but illustrating modified forms of the eccentric connection between the lever and the arbor.
Referring to the drawings, 1 is the fork or lever and 2 the escape wheel both of the usual standardized form, the teeth of the escape wheel having a surface or lifting angle cooperating with the surface of lifting angle of the fixed pallets or jewels 3, carried by said lever l and in the preferred type of escapement illustrated these fixed pallets 3 project at right angles to the face of said lever 1.
The fork or lever 1 is carried by an arbor at which in the form shown in Figs. 1 to 3 is eccentric with relation to the pivots 5 which turn in bearings not shown. In the form of lever escapement shown in Figs. 1 and 2 the eccentric arbor 4 is driven through to frictionally engage an eccentric collar 6 and said collar (3 is driven through and preferably upset to frictionally engage and in-- close the lever 1. In this form one inclosing rim or flange of collar 6 is milled or knurled as at 7 along its perimeter and in all forms of eccentric arbor i av portion of the arbor is cut away or flattened as at 8. The object of milling the edge 7 of collars 6 and of flattening the arbor as at S is to permit of the use of a tool in grasping and turning re spectively collar 6 or arbor I.
In the form shown in Fig. 3, the eccentric arbor I is driven through to frictionally engage the lever.
In the form shown in Fig. 4, the arbor 4 is of usual form having its pivots 5 centrally disposed and this arbor I is driven through to frictionally engage the eccentric collar 6 which frictionally engages and incloses the lever 1. In the form shown in Figs. 1 and 2, a double eccentric adjustment is possible. Thus the eccentric arbor 4: may
be turned in either direction in the collar (3 and the collar 6 may be turned in either direction in the lever 1. The range of compensation to right or left is thus from double the eccentricity or the added eccentricity of both collar and arbor to zero eccentricity in which the eccentricity of the collar oi'l'sets the eccentricity of arbor I to make the two concentric.
In Fig. 3 the adjustment to right or left of the lever depends upon the movement of the eccentric arbor L, but in Fig. 4; the adjustment is obtained by turning the eccentric collar 6 the arbor 4c turning therewith or therein as desired.
Having thus described the nature and objects of my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,
1. In a watch escapement, a lever, an arbor and means for eccentrically connecting said lever with said arbor.
2. In a watch escapement, a lever, and an eccentric arbor carrying said lever.
3. In a watch escapement, a lever, an cc centric arbor and a means for eccentrically connecting said lever with said eccentric arbor.
I. In a watch escapement, a lever, an eccentric collar frictionally engaging said lever and an arbor driven through and frictionally engaging said collar.
5. In a watch escapement, a lever, an eccentric collar frictionally engaging said lever, and an eccentric arbor driven through and frictionally engaging said collar.
