Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 25, 1916..
Application filed Hovem'uer 9, 1815. Serial No. 80,557.
Myiuventiiim relates to an improvcmeutv in a trace carrier,
It consists in wide and narrow band, the latter superimposed on the Former and per uianently stitched thereto at intervals, with an llnStllZCllQd portion between the stitching; and ahuckle oi less width than the wide haud, having slots therein to receive and by means of which the buckle is slidahly connected with the narrower band with a portion of the metal forming the bucklebetween the slots'ralsed' and heat to'forin a hook and upturned guards ad acent thereto where he trace rests and adapted to prei'ent-the chain forming the trace from be-' coming i'letachcd "from the hook.
In the accom 'aanying drawings: Figure 1 is a View in side elevation; Fig. :2 is a sectional View; Fig. 3 is an edge elevation of the buckle; and Fi f. 4 is a detached view in perspective oi. the hackle.
The nun'ierals 1 and 2 represent a wide and narrow hand or layer respectively, the narrower band ,or layer 2 being supcrimposed upon the wider band or layer 1. and having portions 3 and stitched thereto.
The numeral indicates a huckle. This is prcierahly stamped from a sheet metal plate of ri-ictaugular form having two parallcl transverse slots 6, 6, and 7, 7, at the upper and lower ends through which the narrower hand 2 out and in alternately as shownjn Fig. and w ich admits of the hucklehcing adjusted up and down and held where placed by 'frictional engagement, While the length of these slots 6, 6 and 7, 7 approximately correspond to the width of i the narrow r baud 2, the entire width of the buckle is cousulerahly less than the wider.
band Lise that the edges of the hackle are prevented from chafing and cutting into the skin of the draftauimal.
The entire center of the buckle is raised and more or less rounded and slotted as at 8,and bent and fashioned to form an upturned and inturned hook 9 to which the trace 1 is hooked and the guard flanges 11, 11, are disposed diagonally, and at each side of the hook,
so that the inner end of the hook extends within the plane of the outer edges of the guard flanges, thereby forming a substantial closure of the hook againstthe band 2 when in position, and 111 that vay along wlth the .protection of the guard-flanges preventing the accidental detachment of the trace. The raised and curved base formation of the hook gives added strength and support thereto From the foregoing it will be seen that a strong and easily adjustable buckle is provided which will precludeaccidental detachmeet 01" the trace, which cannot chafe or irritate the draft animal by pressing upon or cutting into his skin.
I claim:
l. A trace carrier comprising two bands of different widths, the narrower'or' which is superimposed and secured at intervals to the wider hand, and a buckle wider than the narrow band and of less width than'thc wide hand, slidahly secured upon the narrowerhand and held thereupon frietionally, said bucklehaving an upwardly and inwardly turned hook between the points oi frictional engagement with the narrower hand and provided with diagonally disposed outturned guards or flanges which extend into a plane outside of that in which thei'rce end of the hook terminates.
2. A; hack hand buckle comprising a sheetmetal plate having; a pair oi transverse slots at each end and struck-up at the center, and having an approximately lJ-shaped slot formed therein, the edges of which are curved outwardly from one side of the buckle, and the center fashioned into an iuwardly-turucd tongue, which intersects ARCHTBALD A.
