Be it known that I, ELMER S. SHIMER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Milton, in county of Northumberland and f-rltate of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cutter-Heads, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in cutterheads adapted to fit on the side spindles of a planing and matching machine for flooring, for cutting tongues and grooves.
Many forms of cutter-heads made of two sections have large openings between the two flanges and collect dust and chips, destroying their means of ready adjustment. Such head sections have no special interlocking means, and in a few months of hard usage a lost motion between the sections interrupts the accuracy of the expanding mechanism, and causes many heads to be thrown away long before their users have had adequate service.
It is the purpose of this head to entirely overcome these defects by interlocking the head sections and flanges in a strong manner with post-like extensions into which the knives are firmly held in place with slot and mortised bolt and nut, closing all openings to a minimum.
One of the objects of my present invention is to provide simple means for regulating the thickness 01 tongue and groove; and another is to provide for using straight bits or cutters made from high speed steel that is inexpensively and quickly ground to shape and sharpened.
WVith the foregoing and other objects in view, the present invention comprises a head made in two counterpart and interlocking sections, the .main section having a threaded hub which fits and is secured upon the side spindle, and the upper or auxiliary section having a hub of larger bore to it the hub of the main section, and each section provided with flanges, which flanges are subdivided and carry posts with alternate recesses corre spending in size to the posts, and adapted to interlock therewith, the flanges and posts being grooved and counterbored to receive straight bits and mortised bolts through which grooves and bolts the bits or cutters extend, and the bolts having nuts whereby they are tightened upon the bits or cutters to hold the latter securely in place. The two sections are not only interlocked but adjustable lengthwise of the spindle with respect to each other, whereby to adjust the bits to the desired width of tongue and groove, and the grooves and bits or cutters are straight, thus making the cutter-head a simple one, easy to adjust, eliicient in operation, and at the same time comparatively inexpensive.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a view in side elevation, showing the sections of the cutter-head partly together; Fig. 2 is a .plan view; Fig. 3 is a vertical section; Fig. 4: is a plan view of the main or lower section; Fig. 5 is a horizontal section; Fig. 6 is a vertical section through the flange, post, bit or cutter, and bolt; Fig. 7 is a view of the upper and lower bits or cutters for cutting the groove; and Fig. 8 is a similar view of the upper and lower bits or cutters for cutting a tongue.
As substantially the only difference between the two heads for cutting tongue and groove is in the bits or cutters, one only will be described.
A and B represent the main or lower and the auxiliary or upper sections respectively of the cutter-head. Section A comprises a hub l and a flange 2. The hub 1 is constructed and adapted to fit and be secured on the side spindle of the planing or matching machine, and it is provided with an integral flange 2, the outer edge of which is rounded, as shown,-and on this flange the integral upwardly-extending posts 3, 3, are secured. These posts are generally equidistantly located, and may ary in number, ac cording to the number of cutters in each head section, as for instance there may be four, six or eight of these cutters in each section, depending upon the requirements of the machine, four being illustrated. The posts have flat tops and are flush at their outer edges with the rounded outer edge of the flange, of which they form in reality an elongated portion, and their remaining edge forms-the major part of the cylinder. These posts are thus minutely described for the reason that, alternately with the posts, the flanges are provided with recesses l in shape and size to correspond with and fit the posts 8' of the other section B which they receive, and the flange 2 of the auxiliary or upper section B of the cutter-head is provided with rounded recesses at to receive the posts 3 of the main or lower section, and the bore of the hub 1 of the auxiliary or upper section is of a size to just fit and receive the hub 1 of the lower section. Thus when the two sections A and B are together, the hub of one is mounted on the other, and the posts and recesses on the two flanges interlock per- 5, to receive a mortised bolt 6, and the mortise or slot 7 through each bolt is adapted to'be in alinement with a straight groove 8 extending radially through the flange and integral post from the outer edge thereof to and slightly into the hub. Each groove 8 and slot 7 receives a straight bit or cutter 9 which is held securely in place in its proper radial adjustment by a nut 10, which is adapted to be screwed up tight on each mortised bolt. Thebits are made in pairs as shown in Figs. Tand 8, the former pair adapted to cooperate to cut the groove, and the latter pair to cut the tongue on the opposite edge of the piece of flooring being planed. Thus all nuts are readily accessible for the renewal or adjustment of the bits or cutters, without the necessity of removing the cutter-head from the spindle. To afford clearance for the inner ends of the bits or cutters, the holes 11 are drilled at the inner ends of the recesses 4.
The hub 1 is provided with screw-threads 12, and the hub 1 with screw-threads 13. An internally-threaded collar 14: screws upon the threads 13, and this collar carries a spring-lock 15. The collar 16 screws on the threads 12 of hub 1, where it is adapted to be secured by the screw 17 which extends into the threaded holes 18 and 19 in the col lar 14:, and the hub 1. The lower or inner edge of the collar 14 is provided with radial notches 20, which the dog 21 on the end of the spring-lock 15 engages, whereby to hold the collar 13 against accidentally turning from the position in which it is set by the spanner-wrench. The function of this collar 1 1 is to adjust the two sections with respect to each other, and to regulate the distance of the cutters or bits with respect to the thickness of the tongue or groove to be out. By turning this collar 14 back upon the threads 13 of the hub 1, it forces the two sections toward each other, as fully explained in Letters Patent to Shimer, No. 668,586,
dated Feb. 19, 1901'.
I claim:,
L-A cutter-head composed of sections, each section comprising a flange and hub, one hub adapted to be received within the .other, each flange subdivided by curved rccesses which extend therethrough, and having curved posts extending from the periphery toward the hub, and reaching from recess to recess, and corresponding in shape, size, and thickness with said recesses which they are adapted to fit and with which they interlock, each flange radially grooved, cutters adjustably mounted in said'grooves, and means for securing the cutters in the grooves.
2. A cutter-head comprising two sections, ,each composed of a flange and a threaded hub, one hub adapted to receive and substantially fit the other, each flange having a plurality of curved recesses extending throughout the entire thickness of the flange, which recesses are of asize between a circle and a semi-circle, and enlarged or thickened post portions which extend from the periphcries of the flanges inwardly, reaching from one recess to another, and corresponding in shape and size to said recesses which they are adapted to fit, each thickened portion of a flange radially grooved and counterbored to receive a cutter and a mortised bolt, means for tightening these bolts whereby to hold the cutters adjustably in the grooves, and means for rigidly fastening the two sections together and adjusting them with respect to each other.
