Description
A. J. BENSON.
NON-REFILLABLE BOTTLE. APPLICATION FILED MAR. 8. I916.
Patented July 25, 1916.

TE T S PATENT UFFI ARTHUR J. BENsoiaor MALpnn, MASSACHUSETTS.
NoN- EEILLABLE LBOTTLE.
T o all-whom it mag concern Be it known that I, ARTHUR J. BENsoN,
may also operate to prevent refilling. I
accomplish this object by the means shown in the accompaning drawing, in which:
Figures 1, 2, and 3 are central longitudinal sections through the neck of a bottle embodying my invention.
Fig. 4 is an end View of the stopper which I employ.
In the drawing, 0!. indicates the neck of a bottle, said neck having a straight cylindrical portion, or throat m at its outer end, which extends inward for a suitable distance, and has an inwardly facing shoulder a at its inner end. An enlarged chamber a is provided in the lower portion of the neck, at the outer end of which an inwardly facing shoulder a is provided, and at the inner end of which a conical seat a is formed. A similarly enlarged chamber is provided between the shoulder a and a shoulder a adjacent the inner end of the throat a.
I further provide a stopper which comprises a cylindrical body portion 6, of cork, or other compressible material, which is suitable for the purpose, and which is of a size to fit tightly in the throat a of the bottle, and has a conical shaped rubber valve 0 attached to its lower end by a central longitudinal stem (Z. A plurality of spring fingers e are also secured to the stopper between the cork and rubber portions 5 and c, and are arranged to eX- tend longitudinally of the cork portion and to spring outwardly therefrom. A metal cap 7 is also secured on the opposite end of the cork, from the rubbervalve, by the stem d, said cap being of sufficient thickness to prevent the insertion of a cork screw therethrough.
When the bottle has been filled, the stopper is forced into the neck of the bottle until its metal cap f is flush with the outer end of the neck, in which position the cork portion 7) will fit tightly in the throat at. The spring fingers e are of such a length Specification of LetterslPatent. P te t d July 25, 191
Application filed March 8, 1916. SerialN 0. 82,909.
that, when the stopper has been forced into may be pouredout, the stopper is pushed down into the neck thereof, beyond the cylindrical portion a so that it is free to fall into the enlarged chamber a In this position the ends of the fingers e will be held some distance below the shoulder a and will spring out against the sides of the chamber (4 while the gravity of the stopper will cause its conical lower end to engage the seat a hen, however, the bottle is partly inverted, the stopper will fall back into the upper portion of the chamber a, but movement beyond this point will be prevented by the fingers, which will engage the shoulder a and hold the stopper midway between the seat a and the throat (6.
As the chambers a and a areof substantially greater diameter than the diameter of the stopper, the liquid in the bottle will flow past it from the neck, as indicated in Fig. If, however, it is attempted to refill the bottle, the valve portion 0 will seat in the lower end of the neck, and prevent the liquid from flowing from the neck into the body of the bottle.
4 I claim 1. A bottle having the passageway through its neck provided with a contracted throat at its outer end, a contracted seating portion at its inner end, and an enlarged portion therebetween, a stopper having a main'portion arranged to fit said throat, and an end-portion to seat against said seating portion, to close said portions, and oppositely disposed engaging means on the stopper and on the interior of said passage way to hold the stopper against removal, when in position to close said throat, and to hold it in a position intermediate said enlarged portion, when the bottle is being emptied. i i
2. A bottle having the passage way through its neck provided with a contracted throat at its outer end, a contracted seating portion at its inner end, and an enlarged portion therebetween, and inwardly facing shoulders at the inner end of said throat intermediate said enlarged portion, a
stopper having a main body portion arshoulder, when the stopper is in position in ranged to fit tightly in-said throat and haV-' said throat, and the inner shoulder, to hold 10 ing a valve portion at its inner end adapted the stopper in an intermediate position in to seat against said seating portion, and said enlarged portion.
' 5 spring arms connected to said stopper be- In testimony whereof I have signed my tween its-valve portion and its body portion, name to this specification. and extending in a direction to overlie the V latter in position to engage the outer w ARTHUR J. BENSON.
