useful Improvements in Machines for Mak` ing Paper Bottles, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to machines for forming paper bottles.'
'The machine herein illustrated is particularly adapted for forming a straight tube of paper or similar material into bottle form.
In the'machine illustrated there is a moldd that conforms to the shape of a bottle and around this mold there are arranged forming members which may be pressed radially inwardly so as `to engage the paper of the tube at equi-distant' places around the tube in order to bend and conform the paper to `the mold. The members which are thus pressed may be referred to as loop-forming members because they are spaced a sufficient distance apart to permit the surplus-paper to assume the form of a loop in each of the interstices between them. There is also arranged about this mold another set of members which can be pressed radially inwardly and these last-mentioned members press the loops just referred to down into the plaits or folds against the bottle form. This second set of members may be referred to as plait-pressing members becausetheir function is to press the-loops into plaits or folds.
The loop-forming members and the plaitpressing members in effect constitute one set of duplex forming members or forming arms. It has been found to be of-great importance to have plait-pressing members follow the loop-forming members with a certain lag since the formation of the loopfis considerably influenced by the confines, especially in a radial direction, of the space in which it is to form and this space is determined by the relative position of the two sets of forming members. In other words, it is advisable that the loop-forming members perform their function and that after the loop 'is formed the plait-pressing members are brought into operation to perform their pressing function. Unless this sequence of operations is properly taken into consideration there is a chance that the resultmg loops would have a distorted appearance and thus the resulting article, to wit, the bottle body, would have an unsightly appearance and would be lacking in the proper strength. It should be noted, however, that should the lag become too great the loop instead of taking a round shape, .which is the preferable form, would become more or less pointed and this might cause a breaking along an irregular line when the loop is pressed into a plait or fold. In the pressing of tubes to form paper bottles it has also been found that where each of the loop-pressing members engages the paper tube `at only approximately one point the paper will Anot necessarily break 'evenly along this pressing member and obviously it is advisable to have the formation of the face of such pressing or forming member substantially conform to the bottle conformation.
An object of this invention is to provide a' machine which will avoid the diiiiculties referred to and which will properly form and press the loops so that a paper tube can be changed in its configuration or shape to conform to the shape of a bottle and with this object of constructing such a machine at least certain of the forming members are provided with adjustable or movable faces which will approximately follow the paper that is in the tube for the whole length of the neck or throat, or both, and at all stages from the primary tube which may be a straight tube to the ultimate resulting product, to wit, a bottle body.
In further pursuit of the purpose there is l provided means for operating the duplex set of forming members in such a way as to give the desired lag to the loop-pressing members thereof and fat the same time the necessary leverage to force down the plaits or folds with suificient pressure to crease the edges. This object is accomplished by employing suitably formed cam surfaces on the backs of the pressing members, which cam surfaces are engaged by rollers mounted on a ring that surrounds the members and which ring with rollers thereupon is capable of being moved vertically in a manner to force the pressing members inwardly.A It will be evident that by choosing the cam conformation the leverage or thrust against the pressing members can be gradually increased as the resistance of the paper increases and the ca-m conformation can be constructed so that the maximum pressure is at the end of the upward travel of the rollers.

Fig. 3 is a plan view partially broken away and in this figure the loop-forming members are shown in the position which they occupy at the end of the loop-forming operation, while the plait-pressing members are shown in the position which they occupy as they are pressing the loops to form plaits or folds. Fig. 4 shows the construction of the loopforming members. Fig. 5 is a plan view of themembers shown in Fig. 4. Fig. 6 is a vertical sectional view of a paper tube which is to be pressed so as to form a bottle .body. Figs. 7 and 8 show respectively a side view partially broken away and a plan View of the article which is made by the pressing, to wit, a bottle body.
The frame of the machine comprises members designated as A and to this frame there is secured and supported the inner forming mold B. This mold has the shape or configuration of a bottle which is to be constructed and it comprises a body part l, a throat part 2 and a neck part 3; however, as the throat and neck parts mayl be considered as merging into each other they will be referred to as the throat, meaning the part which may be considered technically the throat or the parts which comprehend both the throat and the neck. In other words the word throat is to be broadly construed. There is. arranged about the mold B two sets of forming or pressing members or arms. One set of these members is designated by the reference character C and the function of said members is to engage the outer sides of the tube X and press the latter inwardly so that there will be formed between these members or arms the loops Y; these members C therefore are frequently referred toas loop-forming members. The other set of members is designated by the reference character D and the function thereof is to press the loops Y inwardly so as to form plaits or folds. These members D are therefore frequently referred to as plait-pressing members or arms.
It will be observed that the plait-pressing members are located between the loop-forming members and that they lag behind the loop-forming members; in order words, the loops are first formed by the members C and they are subsequently pressed by the members D into plaits. These members D should not lag too far behind the loopforming members C since they should confine to a certain extent the loops as they are being formed. The tube X before being pressed is shown in Fig. G and it is preferably in the form of a hollow cylinder and the shape after being pressed is clearly shown in Figs. 7 and 8. The loop-forming members are shown in cross section in Fig. 4. Each of these members has two yieldable or spring-pressed members 4 and 5.v
These members 4 and 5 are pivotally mounted upon the members C at 6 and 7 respectively and they are pressed inwardly by the springs 4 and 5 so that they can yield. The upper end 8 of the member 4 is free to be forced outwardly, so to speak, toward the loop-forming member C as the latter is forced inwardly toward the mold and the lower end 9- of the yieldable member 5 is also free to be forced outwardly vtoward the loop-forming` member C as the latter is forced inwardly. The parts 4 and 5 are arranged respectively opposite what may be known technically as the neck 3 and the throat 2 of the bottle. The members 4 and 5 may be considered as adjustable, yielding or spring-pressed face members which can adapt themselves to the paper being pressed as the loop-forming members are forced toward the mold. These members 4 and 5 may also be considered as constituting a pair of knuckle members since their pivotal points G and 7 lie adjacent to each other.
By referring to Fig. 1 it will be observed that the members 4 engage the tube X for practically their full length and that similar remarks apply as to the yieldable member 5, and in Fig. 2 it will be seen that these two same members engage the paper in the bottle body for their full length even when the loop-forming members C yha-ve been forced inwardly their full distanfce. It will be observed that the loop-forming members or arms C are pivotally secured to the frame A by parts l0 while the plait-pressing members or arms D are secured to the frame by parts 11. A handle or lever E is fulcrumed on the frame at 12 and one end of this lever is connected t a link F which is in turn connected to a ring G that surrounds the pivoted members or arms C and D. This ring G carries a number of rollers H some of which engage the cam formations 13 which are on the sides of the loop-forming members C that are farthest remote from the mold, while the rest of said rollers engage the cam formations'14 which are on the sides of the plait-pressing members D that are farthest remote from the mold. It will also be observed that the shape of the cam formations is such that as the ring Cr is forced upwardly by the lever the upper ends of the pivoted members or arms C and D will be forced toward the mold. lt will also be noted that the cam formations 14 are arranged relatively to the cam formations 13 so that the plait-pressing members D lag behind the loop-forming members C, while the cam formations 13 permit a slight upward movement of the ring G so that the plait-pressing members can be forced home after the loop-forming members have been forced home, viz., to final position toward the mold. With this 'arrangement of the cams the two sets of pivotally mounted members or arms in effect constitute what may be considered one set of duplex forming arms. e
The improvements herein set forth are not limited to the precise construction and arrangement shown and described as they may be embodied in various forms and modifications without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention. v
What is claimed is: 1. A paper bottle machine comprising in combination with a central bottle form or mold a set of loop-forming members and a 1 set of plait-pressing members both of which sets are capable of movement in a radial direction. toward the bottle form, andan A adjustable face-member mounted upon each of the loop-forming members.
2. A paper bottle machine comprising in combination an interior forming mold having the configuration or shape of a bottle to be constructed, a plurality of loop-'forming members arranged about said' mold, a plurality of plait-pressing members arranged about saidl mold, and means for forcing said members toward said mold in such a manner that the plait-pressing members will lag behind the loop-forming members, each of said loop-forming members having upon the part thereof which is opposite the neck portion of the mold an adjustable face member which can adapt itself to the papertube as it is being pressed and up to the time the tube assumes its inal form.
3. A paper bottle machine comprising in combination with an inner forming mold,
forming members arranged about the forming mold, and means for forcing the forming-members toward said mold, the mold belng arranged with the neck part uppermost and the forming-members being provided opposite the neck part of the mold with yieldable means having faces the upper ends of which move outwardly relative to the forming-members forced toward the mold.
' 5. A paper bottle machine comprising in combination with'an -inner forming mold having the conformation or shape of a bottle to be constructed and arranged with the neck or throat part thereofuppermost, a plurality of forming-members about the mold, and means for forcing the upper ends of the forming-members toward arranged as the latter are.
the mold, said forming members being provided with face members which yield relative to the forming-members and which are arranged so that they can adapt themselves to the paper of a tube as the latter is being pressed to the form of a bottle body with loops between the forming members.
6. A machine for making paper bottle bodies said machine comprising in combination an inner mold having the configurationl or shape of a bottle and arranged with the neck portion thereof uppermost, a series of forming arms about said mold'the lower ends of which forming arms are pivotally secured adjacent to the lower end of said forming mold, and means for forcing the u per ends of said forming arms toward said mold, said forming arms having upon their upper ends yieldable members which are constructed and arranged so that the upper ends of the yieldable members can move outwardly relative to their companion arms as the latter are forced toward the mold.
7. A machine for making paper bottles comprising in combination an inner mold having the configuration or shape of a bottle and arranged with the small end of the -throat portion of the bottle uppermost, a series vof forming members arranged about said mold and having their lower ends pivotally secured, and means for forcing the upper ends of said forming members toward said mold, each of said forming arms having on the portion opposite the throat portion of the mold a yieldable member which is free to adapt itself to the sides of a pa'per tube on the mold prior to the tube being pressed and which yieldable member engages and conforms to the paper at the end of the pressing operation.
8. A machine for making paper bottles comprising in 'combination a mold having the configuration or shape of a paper bottle and arranged with the throat portion uppermost, a series of members pivotally mounted at theirlowerends and arranged about said mold, and means for forcing the upper free ends of said members toward the throat portion of the mold, said members having yieldable face members which are arranged so that the free ends of said face members can be forced toward their companion forming members asthe latter are pressed inwardly toward the mold.
9. A machine for making paper bottles comprising in combination a mold having the configuration or shape of a bottle and arranged with the neck portion uppermost, a series of loop-forming members arranged about said mold, a series of plait-pressing members arranged about said mold, which loop-forming members and plait-pressing members are pivotally secured at their lower ends, and means for forcing the free ends of said members toward the mold, the loopforming members each having a plurality of yieldable face members which constitute a set of knuckle members, the upper and lower ends of which knuckle members are free to move toward the companion forming members with which the kunckle members cooperate as the forming members are pressed toward the mold.
10. A paper bottle machine having a frame, a mold having the configuration or shape of a bottle secured to the frame and arranged with its neck or throat portion u ppermost, a series of arms or loop-forming members pivotally secured at their lower ends to the frame, a series of arms or plaitpressing members secured at their lower ends to the said frame, both of which sets of arms are arranged about the mold, each arm being provided with a cam surface on the side farthest from the mold, and pressing means comprising a ring with rollers mounted thereupon, which rollers are arranged to engage said cam surfaces as the ring is moved upwardly to force the free ends of said arms toward the mold, the cam conformations on the plait-pressing members being arranged relatively to the conformations on the loop-forming members so that the plaitpressing members will lag behind the loopforming members.
11. A machine for making paper bottles which machine comprises in combination a frame, a mold secured to said frame and which mold is constructed so that it conforms to the shape of a bottle 'and is arranged with its neck or throat portion uppermost, a series of loop-forming members arranged about said mold and having their lower ends pivotally secured to said frame, a series of plait-pressing members arranged about said mold and pivotally secured to said frame, each of said pivoted members of both of said sets having upon the side away from the mold a cam conformation, a ring surrounding said pivoted members, and means for moving said ring upwardly so as 'to force the free ends of said pivoted members inwardly, said ring having upon it a number of rollers which engage said cam conformations, the cam conformations of the loop-forming members being arranged relatively to the cam conformations of the plaitpressing members so that the plait-pressing members will lag behind the loop-forming members as the ring is moved upwardly, said cam conformations being shaped so that the greatest pressure which can be exerted upon the forming members bythe ring takes place at or near the end of the upward movement of said ring.
12. A machine for making paper bottles comprising in combination with an inner mold which has the conformation or shape of a bottle and which is arrangedI with the throat or neck portion of the mold uppermost of a set of pressing or forming armsv which are pivotally secured at their lower ends and arranged about said mold and provided on their outer sides with cam conformations, and pressing means comprising a ring that is -provided with rollers engaging said cam conformations, the cam conformations being constructed so that as the ring is forced upwardly the upper free ends of said arms will be force'd inwardly.
