il '0 all whom t may concern Be it known that 1, Parini KiiUsE, a citizen of the United States, residing-in the borough of Brooklyn, county of Kings, city and State of New York, have -invented certain new @and useful improvements in F langing Machines for Can Bodies, of which the following is a specification.
rlThis invention relates to can machinery or devices,'and aims to provide improvements therein.v
ln the practical art of.' can making, considerable dificulty has been encountered in developing amachine or device capable of satisfactorily flanging can bodieswhich are polygonal in sliape, especially at a speed for quantity production.
.The present invention provides a machine capable of producing satisfactory flanges, upon can' bodies of polygonal shape,and capable of performing the Hanging operation .at a rapid rate. v. thermore provides `a machine or vdevice in -whichthe construction is simple,"ecie`nt and durable. f An embodiment of the invention is illustrated in 4'the accompanying drawings, wherein Fig. 1 is a longitudinal, sectional view of the middle and one end or side of said embodiment. c

The numeral 10 designates the means for turning over the edge or edges of a can body,
for the purpose of forming'a flange, such as indicated by the letter Fig. 2.

The edge-turning or flange-forming means 10, are also conveniently carried by the slide 2O.y The ange-turning means 10 preferably comprises a plurality of segments 30,

When the segments are collapsed, the shoulder 34 projects beyond the edges ofthe can body, and, when the slide or slides 20 move the group or groups of segments toward the can bodies inrtlie forms 12, the segments enter the can j' beyond the corner 32, which allows the edge "portion of the` can body to turn.
Athe segments 30, preferably engage the edge body until theshoulder 34 strikes the edge of the can body, and, if'this contact is made prior to the timethe slide 2O completes its movement, the canv body will thereafter move with the slide and segments 30 thereon, thus being centered or located by the action vof said slide, segments, and shoulder 34 thereon. Means, .such as .springs 37, vided for normally collapsing the segments 30, and means, s uch as a wedge-block; 39, is conveniently provided for spreading or eX- panding the segments. Slots 41 inthe segments 30, admitlof movement of the said segments on the bolts 21. The wedge-block 39 isA preferably carried upon a rod 47 slidably mounted in the slide 20. A spring' 50'serves for normally retracting the rod 47, and a cam 52,'acting upon a roller 53on the. said rod 47, serves to press said rod, to' cause the wedge-block 39 A' erably controlled by a cam 55 engaging a roller 56 on the said slide 20.
A vplurality of'v confining 'means 11, and flange-forming meanslO, constituting a unit, are provided,` and these' units are preferably arranged symmetrically around a shaft or axial support 117 ,n as shown in Fig. 3. The cams 24, 52, and 55, on the one hand, and the confining means, or edge-turning or flange-forming means, on the other hand, are made relatively movable, whereby a conided. Tothis end, the unit or units" of conining and :edge-turningmeans are-preferably made rotatable, such rotation being conveniently effected through"4 the shaft 117. Rods 60, passing through the side frame of the machine, and fastened to the cam 55,

Where two. ends of a can body are to be flanged, as is usually the-case, thelanging construction is duplicated on opposite sides of the machine. v l

When the slide 2O moves toward the can body, the group 4of segments 30 are collapsed, and partially enter the can body. The vshoulder 34 thereof, if the cans are not propproperly located position.
When the part 13 is closed upon the p art 14, so as to confine the vcan body, cam 52 acts upon. roller 53 ofthe rod 47, carrying the wedge-block 39, and causes said wedgeblock to spread or expand the segments 30 of the die or edge-turning'means 10. The extent vto which the segments 30 project into the can body being limited by the shoulder' 34, the width of the'flange formed in the can body by the expansion of thesegments is constant. The movement of "these segments against the projecting edges lof the can body causes 'these' projecting' edges to be turned around the-'corners 32 of the form, thereby forming the flange Preferably, the segments act to slide against the sides of the turned over'e'dge, and presses and flattens the-said edges or flanges against the form.
Thereupon, the roller 25 passes off of the cam 24, allowing the spring 22 to push away the arm 17, thereby moving away the partl 13 of theform, and opening the form.4 The cam 55 thenac'ts upon the slide 20, through the roller 56, to 'withdraw the form 15. At

W hat is claimed is: 1. A Hanging machine for can bodies, or
the like, comprising means for confining said can-body with the edgewliich vis to be turned to constitute the flange, free to be turned, and a device adapted to move across the planes of .the edges, and thereby adapted to turn said edges to form the flange, said edgeyturning device comprising a die having segmultaneously move said segments against and across the-edges of said can body.

A Hanging machine for can-bodies, or the like, comprising' means for confining said can-body with the edge Which is to be turned to constitute the flange, free to be turned, a device adapted to move across the planes ot the edges, and thereby adapted to turn said edges to form the flange, and a` slide movable axially toward and from the open end of the can-body, said edge-turning' device being mounted on said slide, and means for moving said slide toward and trom said can-body.

A tlanging machine torcan-bodies, or the like, comprising means for confining said can-body with the edge which is to be turned to constitute the flange, tree to be turned, a device adapted to move across the planes of the edges, and thereby adapted to turn said edges. to form the flange, and a slide movable axially toward and from'the open end of the can-body, said edge-turning device being` mounted on said slide, said slide also having thereon a form comprising a part of said confining means.

A Hanging machine for can-bodies, or the like, comprising means for lconiining said can-body with the edge Which is to be turned to constitute the iiange, free to be turned, a device adapted to move across the planes of the edges, and thereby adapted to -the like, comprising means for confining said can-body with the edge which is to be turned to constitute the flange, vfree to be turned, a device adapted to move across the planes of the edges, and thereby adapted to turn said edges to form the iianp'e, and a' slide movable axially toward and trom the openend ot the can-body, said edge-turning device being mounted on said slide, said edge-turning device comprising a die having radially movable segments, and
for moving said segments, said meanscomprising aV rod movable upon said slide, means t'or movingsaid slide toward and from said can-body, and means for moving said segment operating rod to actuate said segments.

Hanging machine for can-bodies, or the like, comprising means for confining said can-body with the edge which is to be turned to constitute the flange, free to be turned, and a device adapted to move across the planes et' the edges, and thereby adapted to turn said edges to form the flange, a slide movable axially toward and from the open end of the can-body, said edge-turning device being mounted on said slide, said edgeturning device comprising a die having radially movable segments, and means for moving said segments, said means comprising a rod movable upon said slide, said conlining means and edge-turning means being plural and rotatable as units around an axis, a cam for operating said slides, and a cam for operating said rod.
