To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EDWARD M. MILLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Salisbury, in the county of Rowan and State of North Carolina, have invented new and useful Improvements in Baskets, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to baskets, and has particular application to a laundry basket or that type of basket which is used in machine laundries to carry large quantities of soiled clothes from place to place.

The principal object of this invention is to provide a device of this character which comprises a frame and pouch, the pouch being held in extended position upon the frame and capable of being detached therefrom whereby the same may be removed and cleaned.

Another object of my invention is to provide a device of this character which is strong and durable in its construction and invention consists in the feautres of construction and combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which:

Referring to the drawings in detail, 1 designates the frame of the basket in its entirety, it being preferably made of steel and rectangular in contour. The frame consists of a series of vertically disposed U-shaped members, certain of the members being arranged transversely as at 2, while the remaining members are arranged longitudi nally as at 8, the horizontal portions of each of the members 2 and 8 intersecting each other at right angles to form the bottom of the frame and rigidly secured to each other by means of bolts or rivets 4. In the present instance I have used two' transversely arranged U-shaped members and three longitudinally arranged members, but I wlsh it to be understood that any number may be used, dependent upon the size one desires to make the basket. To reinforce the bottom of the frame and to keep the U-shaped mem- I bers in their relative positions I have connected the horizontal portions of the longitudinal members with a series of metal slats 4. These slats l are secured to the up per face of the horizontal portion and extend transversely of the bottom. In the present instance I have provided the bottom with three reinforcing slats, one at the medial portion of the bottom and two at the opposite ends of the longitudinal members. Secured to the lower face of each of the horizontal portions of the longitudinal members are longitudinally extending spring runners 5, each of which is formed of a single piece of spring steel, the opposite extremities thereof being bent upon themselves and secured to the longitudinal members, thereby keeping the major portion of the runner in spaced relation to the bottom. These spring runners facilitate the moving of the basket from place to place and protect the bottom of the frame. Mounted Within the frame 1 is my improved form of pouch 6, comprising the body of the basket, which is formed of a single piece of material, preferably canvas, and which is so folded and sewed as to provide a reinforced bottom, as at 7. Secured upon the outer side walls of the pouch are a series of vertically arranged strips 8, said strips being secured to the pouch at the 1011- gitudinal edges thereof so as to provide pockets or passages between the pouch and the strips. These pockets slidably receive the vertical arms 8 of the U-shaped members. I have provided apocket for each of the-arms so that when the pouch body is in its proper position the same will be suspended within the frame, the side walls thereof being drawn taut and adhering closely to the frame. Mounted upon the upper ends of the vertical arms of the frame is a channel bar 9 which is of a rectangular configuration and which is secured to the inner face of each vertical arm by means of a bolt 10, the channel of the bar being arranged on its inner face and adapted to receive the upper edge of the pouch body. To prevent any downward movement of the pouch body upon the vertical arms of the frame I have secured the upper edge of the pouch body within the channel bar 9 by means of a sec tional clamping strip 11 which is of a rectangular configuration and secured to the channel by means of the bolts 12. i edge of the pouch body securely to the frame and arranging the sides of the body taut upon the frame the pouch will conform to the shape of the frame at all times.

To assist in moving the basket from place to place I provide the outer end walls of the channel bar 9 with strap handles 13 which have the opposite ends of the strap secured to the bar in any suitable manner. To protect the contents of the basket and to prevent any loss of the same I have provided the basket with a cover or top let of any suitable material, such as wood, the opposite ends of the top 14 being provided with hasps 15, one of which is adapted to engage a keeper staple 16 at one end of the vertical arm of the frame. The keeper 16 is adapted to receive a bail of any suitable form of lock to retain the top permanently upon the basket and permit the same to be swung upwardly. The hasp upon the 0pposite end of the cover engages the latch member 17 which is suitably fastenedto the opposite end of the frame. This latch member 17 is provided with a hook 18 which has the lower end thereofbent at anobtuse angle to engage the hasp and prevent the top from being lifted. The hook being curved on the arc of a circle allows the hasp to have pivotal movement thereon, thereby permitting the top to be lifted. It will be noted that the vertical arms which comprise the corners of the frame have-the major portions of their length bent at an angle to permit the ready application of the pouch and furthermore eliminate the sharp angles which would cause the strip to wear away quickly.

From the foregoing construction it will be seen that when it is desired to remove the pouch for cleaning or other purposes the channel bar is released from the frame by removing the bolts which hold the same,

whereupon the pouch will be moved up-' wardly off of the vertical arms, the channel bar serving to keep the pouch substantially in an extended position so that the same may be removed in one operation. It is of course understood that if the pouch is to be laimdried the clamping device or channel bar and clamping strip are removed from the same, whereby the pouch will be relieved of all the rigid elements and the same may be subjected to the usual process of laundrying. I

It is thought that from the foregoing, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the basket will be apparent tothose skilled in the art without further description, and that minor changes in size, shape, proportion and the minor details of construction may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the claims appended hereto. I

Having thus described my invention, I claim:

1. A basket comprising a bottom frame member, uprights rising therefrom, a pouch body slidably and detachably connected with the uprights, an upper frame member detachably connected with the uprights and having a receiving channel, and means detachably clamping the edge of said pouch body within said channel.

2. A basket comprising a bottom frame member, uprights rising therefrom, a pouch body slidably and detachably engaging said uprights, an upper frame member detachably connected with the uprights, and means detachably securing the upper edge of the pouch body to said upper frame member.

3. A basket comprising a lower frame I H member, uprights rising therefrom, a channeled upper frame member detachably connected with the uprights, a pouch body slidably and detachably engaging the uprights, said pouch body having its upper edge seat- 7' ed in the channel of said channeled member, and a sectional clamping strip detachably connected with the channeled member and clamping the edge of the pouch body With in the channel thereof.

5. A basket comprising a frame including longitudinally and transversely extending substantially U-shaped members, an upper frame member detachably connected with the upper ends of the vertical arms of said members, a pouch body within the frame and having external pockets slidably and detachably engaging said vertical arms, and means detachably clamping the edge of the pouch body to said upper detachable frame member.
