Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 25, 1916.
Application filed September 25, 1915. Serial No. 52,661.
The present invention is directed to improveinents in spouts, and has for its object to provide a device of this character especially adapted to be attached to the side of an oil can, or the like.
A further object of the invention is to provide a spout, constructed in such a manner that the same can be manipulated to cut off or regulate the flow of liquid from the can.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a spout of this character which is exceedingly simple in construction, eflicient in operation, and one which can'be easily and quickly attached to a conventional form of oil can.
With these and other objects in view, this invention resides in the novel features of construction, formation, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a fragmentary side elevation of the can equipped with the spout. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional View through the same. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line 33 of Fig. 2. Fig. i is a detail perspective view of the seat.
Referring to the drawing 1 indicates the can, which is provided with the usual pouring spout 2, which in this instance serves as means for venting the can.
The improved spout consists of a circular plate 3, which is adapted to be soldered to one side of the can 1, and adjacent the top thereof, said plate being provided with a central opening 4, in which is secured an exteriorly threaded sleeve 5, the purpose of The can body 1 is cut to provide an opening (3, and into which projects the seat 7, said seat being formed from a strip of sheet metal and bent into U-shape. The arms 8 of the seat terminate at their outer ends in right angle extensions 9, which are soldered to the inner surface of the plate 3, and have their inner faces resting against the can body when the plate is fixed to the can, and as clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing.
The spout 10 comprises a cylindrical hollow body 11, said body being exteriorly threaded for engaging the threads of the sleeve To facilitate rotation of the body 11, a head 12 is secured in any suitable manner to the outer end thereof. The inner end of the body has mounted thereon a collar 13, which is adapted to engage the packing 14, said packing being mounted in the seat 7, and may be formed from leather, or any other suitable material. It is obvious that when the body 11 is screwed inwardly that the inner end thereof will impinge against the packing, thus cutting off the flow of liquid from the can. The body may be adjusted toward or away from the packing to increase or decrease the flow of liquid, as desired.
What is claimed is 1. In combination with a can having an opening formed in its side, of a plate adapted to be attached to the can, a seat carried by the plate and projecting into said opening, a packing carried by the seat, a sleeve engaged centrally of the plate, a spout having threaded engagement with the sleeve, said spout having its inner end adapted to engage the packing, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In combination with a can having an opening formed therein, of a plate adapted to be secured exteriorly of the can, a sleeve engaged centrally of the plate, a seat carried by the plate and projecting through said opening, a spout comprising a hollow body having threaded engagement with said sleeve, a packing carried by the seat and adapted to be engaged by the inner end of the spout body, a head fixed to the outer end of the spout body, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testnnony whereof, I aflix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
SAMUEL M. KEKUEWA.
