To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, OLIVER H. QUEEN- HEIM and Hnoron Nnnnorr, J r., citizens of the United States, residing in the city of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful lVindow-Sash Operator, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to sash operating devices.
The invention consists in the arrangement in a novel combination of a longitudinally movable shaft, the actuating devices for moving the shaft axially in opposite directions, connections between the shaft and the window sash whereby hvlien the shaft is moved in one direction the sash will be movedto open position and when the shaft is moved in the opposite direction the sash will be moved to closed adjustment, and provision whereby the shaft may turn or rock as an incident to the movement of the sash so that the shaft is automatically ad justed, thereby preventing binding and vibratory concussions of the parts and damage to the window which might otherwise accrue from such causes.
An object of the invention is to provide an improved sash operating device comprising a longitudinally movable shaft, a rack connected with the shaft in such manner that the shaft is revoluble relative to the rack but is held against relative longitudinal movement, actuating devices coopcrating with the rack for moving the shaft longitudinally in opposite directions, and improved connections between the shaft and the window sash whereby the sash is operated by the movement of the shaft and turns the shaft to proper adjustment relative to the position of the window sash and the connections therefrom to the shaft.
lVith the foregoing and other objects in view, we have illustrated the preferred embodiment of the invention in the accompanying drawings in which' Figure 1 is a plan view of the sash operating device with the sash in closed adjustment. A bracket 5 is releasably attached tothe shaft 1, being held in rigid position thereon by a set A link 7 has one end connected to and the opposite end'of said link is pivotally connected with a member v9 having a hole therein through which passes the rod 10. The rod 10 issupported by brackets 11 which are attached to the window sash. While we have illustrated one such connection between the shaft and the window sash, it is obvious that any number of such connections may be employed and it In the form shown the will be understood by those familiar with such devices that we contemplate use of numerous such connections between the shaft and various window sashes.
It will be noted that the member 9 is movable between the brackets 11' and is thereby enabled more readily to adjust itself in conformity with the position of the outer end of the link 7 as the same is raised and lowered by the opening and closing of the window sash.
An angular bracket 12 is mounted upon a pivot 13 carried by the support 4, said bracket comprising a vertical portion mounted on the supporting pivot 13 and a laterally extended portion to which are pivoted the ends of two links 14. The links 14 are on the upper and lower sides respec tively of the laterally extended portion of the bracket and are retained in connection therewith by a single releasable pivot member 15. The opposite ends of the links 14: receive the link 7 between them and are united therewith by a single releasable pivot member 16 passing through all of said links. The use of the two links 1-1 connecting the link 7 with the pivoted bracket 12 constitutes a superior form of fulcrum device to cooperate with the link 7 acting as a lever upon the two links which serve the function of a fulcrum at both sides of the link 7 to prevent any torsional strain thereon which otherwise might result from the turning of the shaft 1 caused by the raising and lowering of the window sash when shaft is moved longitudinally.
The rack 17 is in the form of a channel member having rack teeth on one side thereof. The shaft 1 is received in the channel of the rack and said rack is fastened in connection with the shaft by U-shaped brackets 18 having the arms thereof passing through holes in plates 19 and secured by nuts 20 screwed upon the ends of said arms. This connection permits the shaft 1 to turn freely within the rack and also holds the rack and the shaft together so that the shaft will be moved longitudinally when the rack is actuated.
- To prevent relative longitudinal movement of the rack and shaft we provide abutments, in the form of clamps 21 attached to the shaft 1 adjacent to the ends of the rack,
with the revoluble washers 22 upon the shaft interposed between said abutments and the adjacent ends of the rack. The purpose of the washers is to minimize resistance to turning of the shaft when the window sash is raised and lowered.
Referring now to the mechanism for actuating the rack to impart longitudinal movement to the shaft, it will be observed that this mechanism is in the form of gearing which is easily operated. As illustrated this gearing is within a supporting case 23 and includes a small pinion 2% meshing with the rack 17 and a relatively large gear 25 meshing with a worm 26. The rack extends through the supporting case and is retained in mesh with the pinion 21 by a roller 21. The pinion 21- and the gear 25 are rigid upon the same axis 27 so that when the worm 26 operates the gear 25 the pinion 2% will also be operated thereby moving the rack. The worm 26 is rigid upon a shaft 28 which constitutes a part of the device for operating the gear. A wheel 29 is attached to the shaft 28 and is capable of being operated manually, or otherwise, as may be required by the location of the device.
When the device is located so that the wheel is not accessible for manual engagement we suggest and have illustrated a chain 30 passing over the wheel and extending downwardly so that it may be conveniently engaged and drawn in either direction to revolve the wheel and thereby operate the gearing as required to drive the device for raising and lowering the sash. As shown the chain passes through holes in guide arms 31 adjacent to the wheel so that the chain will thereby be prevented from becoming detached from the wheel.
Referring to Fig. 3 it will be observed that the shaft 28 is j ournaled in bearings in the supporting case 23 and that anti-friction thrust bearings 32 are interposed between the walls of the supporting case and the ad jacent ends of the worm member so that there is no material frictional resistance to the operation of the worm.
It is apparent that there may be modifications in the construction and'arrangement of the parts without departing from the principles of the invention. We do not rcstrict ourselves to specific features of construction, nor to nonessential details, but
What we claim and desireto secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A window sash operating device coatiprising a longitudinally movable shaft, a rack in connection with said shaft and relative to which said shaft is revoluble, means preventing relative longitudinal movement of said rack and shaft, mechanism for actuating said rack and thereby said shaft longitudinally, and connections between said shaft and the window sash whereby the window sash will be opened and closed as an incident to the longitudinal movement of said shaft in opposite directions.
2. A window sash operating device comprising a shaft, bearings supporting said shaft for longitudinal and rocking movements, a rack, means connecting said rack and said shaft in such manner that they are relatively fixed as to longitudinal movement and enabling the shaft to rotate relative to the rack, gearing for operating said rack longitudinally, means for operating said gearing, and connections between said shaft and the window sash whereby the sash will be opened and closed as an incident to longitudinal movement of said shaft in opposite directions.
3. A device of the character described comprising a shaft, bearings in which said shaft is supported for longitudinal and rotary movements, connections between said shaft and the window sash whereby the sash will be moved to opened and closed positions by the movement of said shaft in opposite directions and whereby said shaft will be turned in said bearings by the movement of said sash, a rack, devices connecting said rack and said shaft and enabling the shaft to turn relative to the rack, means preventing relative longitudinal movement of said rack and shaft, and mechanism for operat ing said rack longitudinally in opposite directions.
4. A device of the character described comprising a shaft, bearings supporting said shaft for longitudinal and rotary movements, a rack, devices connecting said rack with said shaft and enabling said shaft to turn relative tosaid rack, elements preventing longitudinal movement of said rack relative to said shaft, mechanism for actuating said rack longitudinally in opposite directions and effective to hold saidrack in'any of its longitudinal adjustments, a link connecting said shaft with the window sash and being effective to raise and lower the window sash by the longitudinal movement of the shaft and to turn the shaft by raising and lowering of the sash, and additional links cooperating with the first-mentioned 5. A device of the character described comprising a shaft, bearings in which said shaft is supported for longitudinal and rotary movements, a link connecting said shaft with the window sash and arranged to raise and lower the window sash and to turn the shaft as an incident to longitudinal movement of the shaft, a rack, elements holding the rack in connection with the shaft in such manner that the rack and shaft are fixed as to longitudinal movement, and enabling the shaft to rotate relative to the rack, gearing for actuating said rack, and a device for operating said gearing and hold ing it and thereby the shaft in different positions.
6. A device of the character described comprising a shaft, hearings in which said shaft is supported for longitudinal and rotary movements, a link connecting said shaft with the window sash and arranged to raise and lower the sash and to turn the shaft as an incident to longitudinal movement of said shaft, a pivoted bracket, additional links connecting said pivoted bracket with the firstnamed link, a rack, means connect ing the rack and shaft to prevent relative longitudinal movement of said parts and to enable the shaft to turn relative to the rack, a pinion meshing with said rack, a large gear for rotatingsaid pinion, and a manually operable device for operating said gear and effective to hold said gear in its different positions.
7. A device of the character described comprising a shaft, bearings in which said shaft is mounted for longitudinal and rotary movements, a link connecting the shaft with the window sash and arranged to raise and lower the window sash and to turn the shaft as an incident to longitudinal movement of the shaft, a rack, devices connecting the shaft and the rack and preventing relative longitudinal movement of said parts and enabling the shaft to turn relative to the rack, a pinion meshing with said rack, a gear wheel in rigid connection with said to turn the shaft against said rollers as an incident to the longitudinal movement of the shaft, a rack, means connecting the rack and shaft to prevent relative longitudinal movement of said parts and to enable the shaft to turn relative to the rack, and a manipulative device for operating said gearing and thereby the shaft as required to raise and lower the window sash.
9. A device of the character described comprising a shaft, bearings in which said shaft is supported for longitudinal and rotary movements, a link connecting the shaft with the window sash and arranged to raise and lower the sash and to turn the shaft as an incident to longitudinal movement of the shaft, a pivoted bracket, a connection between said pivoted bracket and said link, a rack, means connecting the rack and shaft to prevent relative longitudinal movement of said parts and to enable the shaft to turn relative to the rack, gearing for actuating said rack, and a manipulative device for operating said gearing.

A device of the character described comprising a shaft, rollers supporting and between which said shaft is longitudinally movable, axial bolts on which said rollers are mounted, connections between said shaft and the window sash whereby the sash will be moved to opened and closed positions by the movement of said shaft in opposite directions, and whereby said shaft will be turned between said rollers by the movement of said sash, a rack, devices connecting said rack and said shaft and enabling the shaft to turnrelative to the rack, means preventing relative longitudinal movement of said rack and shaft, and mechanism for operating said rack longitudinally in opposite directions.
11. A device. of the character described comprising a shaft, bearings supporting said shaft for longitudinal and rotary movements, a rack, devices connecting said rack and shaft and enabling the shaft to turn relative to the rack, elements preventing longitudinal movement of said rack relative to said shaft, mechanism for actuating said rack longitudinally in opposite directions and effective to hold it in any of its longitudinal adjustments, a link connecting said shaft With the Window sash and arspecification in the presence of two subranged to ralse and lower the window sash scrlbing wltnesses.
