UNITED STATES PATE T OFFICE TELEMAco ALLnGRo JOSEPH rUsARo, or CINCINNATI, oHIo.
SHOE-LAST.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, TELEMACO ALLE'GRO JOSEPH FUsARo, a subject of the King of Italy, and .a resident-of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Shoe-Lasts, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to lasts to be used in the making or repair of shoes.
The object of my invention is to provide such a last with a permanent heel plate, which is movably secured to the last, so that when the same is inserted in a shoe, the inner sole of said shoe may be received between the plate and the bottom of the last, the plate thus protecting the inner sole during the nailing of the heel and serving as a clench for the nails.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevation of my new shoe last; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same inserted in a shoe, part of the shoe being removed to show the insertion of the last; Fig. 3 is a detail of the heel portion of the last; Fig. 4 is a bottom view of the heel portion of said last; Fig. 5 is a perspective of the heel plate alone; Fig. 6 is a perspective of the slide plates by means of which the heel plate is movably attached to the last.
The numeral 1 indicates a last of the usual kind used in the making of shoes. Said last is provided with recesses, or grooves 2 at each side of the heel and extending upward from the bottom of the last, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4. of the drawings. Arranged to fit against the bottom of the heel of the last 1 is the heel plate 3, which plate is provided with lugs, or tongues, 4 which are adapted to fit into the recesses 2 of the last. The lugs 4 are provided with slots 5 for the purpose hereinafter set forth.
Arranged to fit into the grooves 2 of the last 1, are plates 6 provided with flanges 7 the latter serving to hold the plates flush with the surface of the side of the last, as
shown in Fig. 4, and to provide spaces within which the lugs 4 of the heel plate are adapted to slide. The plates 6 are secured to the last by means of screws as Patented July 18, 1916.
Application filed August 13, 1915. Serial No. 45,404.
shown, or otherwise, one of the screws, 7 passing through the slot 5 in each of the lugs 4, and thus serving to limit the movement of the lugs and heel plate.
The operation and use of my new shoe last will be apparent from the above description to those skilled in the art to which the same appertains. In inserting the last into a shoe, the heel plate assumes the position in which it is shown in Fig. 2 of the draw,- ings, that is, the front end of said plate is depressed, so that there is a wide opening between the plate and the bottom of the last, into which opening the insole 8 of the shoe is readily introduced. WVhen the last is forced down into the shoe, the heel plate rests fiat upon the heel of the shoe, and protects the insole, which lies between the heel plate and the last, from nails used in attaching the heel. In removing the last, the heel plate again assumes the position shown in Fig. 2 and the last is thus readily withdrawn from the shoe, the insole being left in its proper place. By the mounting of the heel plate in the manner above described, it will be seen that the rear of the heel of the last is unobstructed, and, the front of the plate being depressed the insole is easily inserted as the last is pushed forward and down into the shoe.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A shoe last comprising a heel plate arranged to fit against the bottom of the heel of said last, said last being provided with a groove in each side thereof, said grooves extending upward from the bottom of the last, lugs on the front end of said plate, said lugs being provided with slots and being arranged to slide in said grooves, and means passing through the slots in said lugs movably to secure said plate to said last.
2. A shoe last comprising a heel plate arranged to fit against the bottom of the heel of said last, said last being provided with a groove in each side thereof, said grooves extending upward from the bottom of the last, lugs on the front end of said heel plate, said lugs being provided with slots and being arranged to slide in said grooves, plates arranged to fit into said and State of Ohio, this 11th day of August, grooves loosely over said 1ugs, and means 1915. passing through the slots in said lugs mov- TELEMAOO ALLEGRO JOSEPH FUSARO ably to secure said heel plate to said last.
In Witness whereof, I have hereunto set Witnesses: my hand in the presence of two Witnesses, ARTHUR H. EWALD, at Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton R. E. DONOVAN.
