\ BUNCH-FORMING DEVICE FOR CIGAR-MACHINES;
' v Patented July 18,1916. 1
4 Application filed July 14, 1915. Serial No. 39,772.
Improvement in Bunch-Forming Devices for Cigar-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in bunch forming devices-for cigar machines.
In Patent No. 107 5189, issued October 7, 1913, to International Cigar Machinery Company, the assignee of B. T. Burchardl et al., there is disclosed a complete machine for making long filler cigars and the present invention is directed to improvements upon some of the mechanisms in the above patent and is particularly adapted for use on ma chines of that type, although its use is not confined to that particular type of cigar machine.
The invention consists in certain constructions, combinations and parts which will be hereinafter fully described and then'specifically set forth in the claims hereunto appended.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification and in which like characters of reference indicate the same or like parts, Figure 1 is an elevation, partly in section, of .a device constructed in accordance with "the invention; Fig.2 is a detail view, partly insection, showing the mechanism for depositing a charge of filler tobacco in the bight of a Chianti belt in which said charge is rolled into bunch form; Fig. 3 is a plan view illustrating a part of the mechanism shown in Fig. 1, particularly the mechanism for applying adhesive to a binder lying upon the Chianti belt; Fig. 4 is a detail view of the Chianti belt mechanism, shown particularly in section; and Fig. 5 is a cross-sectional view showing the construction of the suc,-
tion bed for the Chianti belt and the operation of the tilting roller.
In carrying the invention into effect, there is provided a Chianti belt, a loop forming roller for the Chianti belt, and. means; for
tilting said roller during'thebun'ch formingbinder may be transferred from one to the other in outstretched condition without danger of wrinkling. The device selected to illustrate the invention is but on' of many possible concrete embodiments of t e same, and changes and variations may be made in its construction. The invention therefore is not to be limited to the precise details of the structure shown and; described. Furthermore, certain" parts of the invention are capable of use independent of other parts and Such independent use is contemplated.
Referring to the drawings, 1 indicates the bed of a cigar machine in connection with which theinvention is used. Mounted upon the bed 1 is a suction table 2 provided with a suitable connection for a pipe 4:, which pipe 4 is connected with any suitable suction producing means. Oveilying the table 2 is a Chianti belt 5 provided with aseries of perforations 6 adapted to register with the perforations in the upper face 3 of the suction bed 1; The forward end of the Chianti belt is secured to the suction table 2 bymeans of a bar 7 and a series of screws 8. The other end of the Chianti belt is fastened to a drum 9 whichis secured to a shaft 10, the shaft 10 being journaled in suitable bearings 11 adjustably mounted in frames 12 and 13, which frames are bolted or otherwise secured to the side of the suction table 2 before referred to. The shaft 10 is provided with a gear 14: which is in mesh with a sector 15 formed on the upper end of a lever 16. The lever 16' is pivoted upon a bar 17 suitably supported in the main frame of the machine. The lever 16 is a two-arm lever and upon one arm is mounted a bowl 18 which tracks in a cam groove 19 formed me.
cam fast upon and operated by a shaft 20 which-is one of the main camshafts of the machine in connection with which the device Chianti belt 5 during the bunch forming operation, and to loosen it during the reverse operation. Meansare provided for demainframe of the machine. The operation of depositing a charge of tobacco in the bight of the Chianti belt is well known in the art and a further description of the mechanism for performing this function is.
deemed unnecessary to a complete under standing of the present invention and is therefore omitted herefrom in the interest of brevity and clearness. Cooperating with the Chianti belt is a roller Chianti belt 5. This roller 28 is adjustably supported at either end upon one of a pair of arms 29.- Each of these arms carries a bowl 30 tracking, one in a cam groove 31 formed in theframe 12, and the other in a .cam groove 32 formed in the frame 13. By
an inspection of Fig. 5, it will be noted that these cam grooves are not alike and that, as a result of their difference, the belt roller 28 will be tilted by the action of the cams as the roller passes over the Chianti belt. This action of theroller 28 is particularly useful When a cigar bunch of slightly tapered form is to be rolled. The arms 29 are integrally joined by a Web 33 at their rear end, and this Web is universally connected in a well known manner at 34 and 35. with a cam lever 36 mounted upon the bar 17 before referred to. The cam lever 36 carries a bowl 37 which tracks in a cam groove 38 formed on a disk mounted upon the shaft 20 before referred to.
Means are provided for depositing a binder upon the Chianti belt, and this means includes a suction binder carrier 39 mounted upon a lever 40, which lever is fulcrumed at 41 to a bracket 42 rising from the bed 1.. Also pivoted at 43 to the bracket 42 is one end of a parallel rod 44, the other end of the parallel rod being pivoted at 45 to an arm 46 rigidly connected with the binder support 39. The lever 40 carries a sector 47 which is in engagement with an operating sector 48, the sector 48 deriving its motion from any suitable source of motion, as for instance from a cam (not shown) mounted upon one .of the main shafts of the machine in connection with which the device is used. lit will be readily understood that this parallel devloe for supporting the binder carrier 39 functions to cause the binder carrier 39 to approach the Chianti belt with its operating face in parallelism with the plane in which the Chianti belt itself lies; and it will be further understood that when a binder is. so
28 underlying the.
menses presented to the Chianti belt, the suction is cut off from the binder carrier, thus releasing the binder therefrom and causing it to be transferred to the Chianti belt in outstretched condition without danger of wrinkling, which might interfere with its proper winding about a charge of filler tobacco.
The device further includes means for applying adhesive to a binder held by suction upon the Chianti belt. With this end in view, there is provided a source of adhesive supply comprising an adhesive fountain 50 and an adhesive roller 51 partly submerged in the fountain 50. The fountain 50 and roller 51 are mounted adjacent the frame 12 and spaced therefrom a distance sufficient to permit of the passage of the arms 29 between the frame 12 and the fountain 50. There is further provided an adhesive roller 52 which is mounted upon a stud 53 secured to an arm 54. The arm 54 is fulcrumed at 55 to a lever 5657 which is cam controlled, although the cam for controlling the lever is not shown in the drawing. The lever 56-57 is fulcrumed at 58 to a bracket 59 de pending from the frame 1 before referred to. The arm 54 is provided with a spur 60 nor mally engaged by a latch 61, which latch is pivoted to the arm 56 of the lever 56-57, at 62. The arm 56 of the lever 5657 is provided with a horn 63 and in this horn is mounted a spring 64 which bears agamst the latch 61 and normally tends to hold it in engagement with the spur 60 before referred to. In Fig. 1 the parts just described are shown in their normal position with the roller 52 in contact with the fountain roller 51 which is rotated by means of a belt 64. The roller 52 accumulates a small quantity of adhesive from the rotating fountain roller 51 and at the proper time the lever 56-57 is given a movement which carries the roller 52 tothe position indicated in dotted llnes in Fig. 1, and in full lines in Fig. 3, wh ch is the position in which the paste is applied to a binder lying upon the Chianti belt, As the parts move forward, the latch 61 comes in contact with an adjustable stop screw 65, which stops the latch and thereby releases the spur 60 so that the roller 52 drops to theupper surface of a binder lying upon the Chianti belt, and' rolls across the same for a limited distance, applying ad hesive to the binder as it so rolls. The re verse movement of the lever 56 -57 causes the latch 61 to move away from the stop 65 and again engage the spur 60 as the roller 52 returns to the fountain roller for more adhesive to be applied to the next succeeding binder.
In view of the foregoing, a detailed description of the operation of the device is deemed unnecessary and is therefore omitted What is claimed isi 1.
