These journals may be 0 any type of construction, but as illustrated each comprises a pair of angularly disposed elastic arms, each havin a cup disk secured at its free end, with t e cup ada ted to engage into the core of the web, an its flange engaging the side of the web exerting the spring tension thereon for the proper unwinding of the roll. Above the supply .webs of paper, and between the side frames a writing-table 5 is mounted, over which the ends of the paper pass toward the paper feeding rolls 6 7 8, 9, and 10 represent guide rolls journaled 111 rear of the writing-table, one guide roll being provided for each web of paper mounted within the machine. These rolls as shown are journaled upon a swinging frame 11, movable therewith so as to provide clerance or accessibility to the interior of the casing for web insertion or removal.

The casing may be provided with end doors mounted, as is customary in this class of machine, arranged to prevent unauthorized access to the inte rior of the machine and especially to the storage compartment at the forward part of the machine, housingthe record slips.
Paper feeding mechanism.-The paper feeding mechanism herein employed, as
hereto e stated, comprises a well known type consisting of a pair of coacting rolls as the most preferable, but their disclosure herein, should not be limited to the term feeding mechanism of the claims herein, unless particular reference is made thereto.

while the roll 6 is journaled in slide-blocks mounted in each of the side frames, each.
having a spring engaging against the same to force the roll downwardly into engagement with roll -7,. to f'rictionally engage the paper fed between the rolls. At one end 'of-the upper roll 6 a gear 13 is fixed, intermeshin with a ar 14, fixed to the axis of the owerroll 15 re resents a second gear fixed to the axle 0 roll 6 mounted preferably within a recess of the frame 3; said gear is adapted to intermesh with the toothed ortion of the se ental master r 16 ed to the shaft 1 and journaled theside fra see The mental master gear. 16 has a toothed contour with a circumference at the pitch diameter of the teeth, equal to the length of period of the feeding rolls, during the op eration of the paper severing mechanism, so as not to advance the paper while itis being severed. Fixed to the shaft 17 is acrank handle 18 for revolving the shaft, which handle may be limited in its rotation, so as to be arrested after a prescribed paper feeding operation, with provision made for manual release for each successive operation, or a crank handle maybe free for continuous rotation wherein the accuracy of the issued lengths is not material.
Paper severing mechanism-The paper severing mechanism comprises a rotative cutter memberlQ, journaled in fixed bearings in the side frames. It is rovided with two cutting edges 20, 21, a apted to suecessively engage with the cutting edge of a relatively stationary cuttingmember 22, slidably mounted within the side frames and urged toward the axis of the revolving cutter member. A spring is provided 'for each end of the knife mounted within the respective side frames, (see Fig. l). The stationary cut-ting member preferably has its cutting edge disposed longitudinally parallel with the axis of the revolving cutter member. The cutting edges of the revolving cutter member are preferably spiral from the machine to be deposited upon the tray plate 23 mounted between the side frames. The tray 23 also serves as a cover for the storage compartment. It may be arranged to be readily removable or permanently fixed to the side frames. It is also desirable to support the tray in a recessed position relative to the edges of the side frames so as to provide a guide for the paper in its travel on the tra The rotating cutter member is arranged to come to rest in a position with its cutting edges away from the stationary cutting member to provide a clearance between the same so as ;not to interfere with the free travel of a successive length of paper which must be fed between the cutter members. It is desirable to discontinue its rotation during a paper advancing interval, and, therefore, I provide a segmental pinion 24, (see Fig. 1), upon the shaft 17 capable in its rotation to intermesh with pinion '25, fixed to the axis of the rotative' cutter member 19, imparting a half revolution to said cutter bining paper feedin mechanism, paper severing mechanism or severing the paper after each predetermined length of feed, and mechanism for sequentially compiling the severed lengths, comprising a receivin tray, a yielding arm positively oscillate subsequent to each paper severing operation to depress an advancinglength upon the tray, and a reciprocating member movable to engage the edge of a severed length and aline the same with a relative edge of said receiving tray.

A device of the nature disclosed combining a pair of coacting rolls yieldingly urged toward each other and positively rotated in opposingdirections, a master gear for rotating said rolls having a toothed cona rotary cutter member having a plural number of cutting edges, each longitudinally spiral, and a relatively stationary cutter- -member yieldingly urged toward the axis of said rotary cutter member, a segmental gear for rotating said cutter member intermittently relative during the inactive interval of said master gear to coiiperatively engage one of the cutting edges of said rotary cutter member with said stationary cutter member and normalizing at relative different planes, and propelling means for rotating said gears.

A device of the nature disclosed combining paper feeding mechanism operated 1n predetermined cycles for feeding a continuous web of paper to serially advance 1nvariable constant lengths thereof, and paper severing mechanism operated successively to each paper length advance to sever the same from the web, comprising a relatively-stationary cutter member, a rotary cutter member provided with a plural number of cutting edges sequentially moved tangentto the cutting edge of said stationary cutter member in a direction opposed to the feed of the paper, and means for yieldingly engaging said stationary cutter member toward the axis of said rotary cutter member, a storage element to receive an advancing length of paper, and means operated in time movements relative with the feed and severance of the paper to sequentially compile the lengths upon said storage element.
