To all whom it may} concern: Be it known that I, JESSE A. B. SMITH,
. a citizen of the United States, residing in Brooklyn borough, in the county of Kings, city and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Type-\Vriting Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to means for mounting a number of sheets, such as carbon sheets or sheets of transfer material, to overlie one another, and arranged'to be interleaved with sheets or webs, all of which may then be advanced to a platen of a typewriting machine, to be written upon.
The invention is intended more particularly for use in an arrangement as above specified, wherein the series of carbon sheets are shifted from time to time to a fresh portion of the continuous w'ebs with which they are used.
The invention is herein shown as an improvement on that disclosed in the patent to \Vernery and Smith, No. 1,132,055, dated March 16, 1915. In said patent there is shown in combination with. the usual paper carriage of a'typewriting machine, an auxiliary framework extending rearwardly from the carriage, over which may be advanced a series of webs to be fed around the platen; said framework also provides a track on which runs a support orshifterfor carbon sheetswhich are interleaved with the webs, said shifter arranged to advance the carbon sheets with the webs, as the latter are fed over the platen to be written upon, the shifter being movable rearwardly from time to time to bring the carbon sheets opposite fresh portions of the webs. The carbon sheets are mounted on fingers or blades, each connected at one end to said shifter; the
blades arranged to project alternately from the opposite ends of the shifter.
An object of the present invention-isto provide a simple and practical form of attachment for said shifter to. hold additional carbon sheets and. thereby increase the carbon sheet-holding capacity of 'the shifter to any desired extent, and thus permit the use of additional webs up to any desired'number within the capacity of the typewriting machine.
The invention provides an attachment which may be placed on existing machines with little or no change in the machines as manufactured.- v
In practising the invention, I provide at each end of the truck or shifter, a support for carbon Sheet-holding blades, each blaue mounted at one end on its support and proecting horizontally toward the opposite support, the blades supported at opposite ends of the truck overlapping, and being arranged in alternation; means also being provided to suitably space the blades to permit the webs to pass freely between them. "supports for said blades may each comprise a pair of upright pins removably attached to the truck-frame and projecting upwardly therefrom.- Each sheet-holding blade is provided with openings to fit said-pins, and
thereby-hold the bladein a position to extend transversely of the webs, and may also have attached thereto a spacing block for suitably spacing adjacent blades. Each blade may have attached thereto a holding clip pivotally mounted on the blade to swing thereon into and out of sheet-clamping po- Sition. Said clips are provided with openings, which when the clip is in clamping position, are in register with the openings in the blade, so as to fit on the supporting pins and thereby lock the clips in sheet-holding position when on said pins. One pin of each pair may project above the other pin to facilitate the mounting of the blades thereon.

A roller platen 10 is mounted on the carriage 11, which may be driven in the usual way, and its letter-feed movement controlled by the usual mechanism, not shown. Types 12 strike against the front face of the platen to print on the work-sheets or webs fed thereover. An auxiliary frame 13 is connected to'the carriage to travel therewith, extends rearwardly from the carriage and provides a web course over which webs may be advanced to a paper shelf 14: at the introductory side of the platen, and thence down-' wardly and around the platen and upwardly past the printing line.
A shifter or truck 15 is provided with means for supporting carbon sheets or sheets of transfer material, which are interleaved with the webs; said truck mounted on the. frame 13 to travel forwardly with the webs, so that the carbon sheets are carried around I the platen and alternate with the webs at the printing line for transferring the type impressions to the webs. In order that the carbon sheets may be shifted rearwardly from time to time, to bring them opposite fresh portions of the webs, the platen is increasing the capacity of the shifter 15,01,

The spacing blocks may be of such thickness that each two adjacent blades mounted on one pair of pins are spaced sufliciently to accommodate a similar blade projecting therebetween, and mounted on the opposite pair of supporting pins, and

so that said blocks may be mounted on the supporting pins. These blocks are of such thickness that they materially aid in supporting the paper-holding fingers or blades in 'a horizontal position. That is, they counteract any-tendency of the blades to tilt on the supporting pins.
The lowermost block25 on one pair of supporting pins may be made thinner or of less depth than the remaining blocks, so'that the blades supported on one pair of pins areslightly lower than those carried by the other pair of pins, whereby the alternate The spacing blocks 25 may be provided with projections 26 formingfinger-pieces, which, when the blocks are on the supporting pins,preferably project atdifferent angles from the several blocks, thereby prey enting the projections on one block interfering with the handling of an adjoining block.
A sheet-holding clip 27 may be provided for each blade 23. The holding clip may be in the form of a sheet-metal strip to extend lengthwise of the blade 23 and folded to extend over both the upper and lower surfaces'of the blade 23. An end 28 of the clip is pivoted between the blade 23 and its spacing block 25 by means of a stud 29 on said block, said stud projecting through openings 30 and 31 in said blade and clip respectively. The clip is also provided with openings 32, which, when the clip is in sheetclamping position, are alined with the correspondingopenings in the blade and block, whereby the blade can only .be placed on its supporting pins when the clip is in sheetclampmgpos1t1on, and whereby the clip is locked in said position and positively prevented from becoming displaced while in use.
The clip 27 may-also be provided with a detent 33 to fitin a corresponding opening 34: provided in the blade 23. and thereby yieldingly hold the clip in sheet-clamping position before it is placed on the supporting pins 21, 22, and also securely hold the carbon sheeton its blade. It will be noted that one of the supporting pins 22 of each pair projects upward a short distance above the other pin, which arrangement materially aids in quickly placing a sheet-holding blade 23 on the pins.
Variations may be resorted to within the scope of the invention, and portions of the improvements may be used without others. Having thus described my invention, I

A device for supporting a series of sheet-holding blades in spaced relation to separate sheets held thereby in superposed relation, and provide space for the passage of interleaved sheets or webs, sald device comprising acarrying frame, supports ex- Y tending upwardly from said frame, a set of sheet-carrying blades removably mounted on each support, the blades on each support projecting toward the other support, with the free ends of one set of blades alternating with and overlapping those of the other set, and spacing blocks arranged to space each two adjacent blades.
3. A device for supporting a seriesof sheet-holding blades in spaced relation to separate sheets held thereby in superposed relation, and provide space for the passage of interleaved sheets or webs, said device comprising a carrying frame, supports extending upwardly from said frame, a set of shcet-carrying blades removably mounted on each support,'the blades on each support projecting toward the other support, with the free ends of one set of blades alternating with and overlapping those of the other set, and spacing blocks carried by said blades, the block on the lowermost blade of one set being of less thickness than the corresponding block of the other set, whereby the blades of one set are elevated with respect to the corresponding blades of the other set to provide space between the overlapping blades.
4. A device for supporting a series of sheet-holding blades in spaced relation to separate sheets held thereby in superposed relation, and provide space for the passage of interleaved sheets or webs, said device comprising a carrying frame, a pair of supporting pins projecting upwardly therefrom,
a series of sheet-carrying blades each removably mounted on said supporting pins, and spacing blocks carried by said blades, whereby the blades are held bysaid pins and blocks in parallel spaced relation to provide space between the sheets supported thereby.
5. A device for supporting a series of sheet-holding blades in spaced relation to separate sheets held thereby in superposed relation, and provide space for the passage of interleaved sheets or webs, said device comprising a carrying frame, a vpairof pins carried by andprojectingupwardly from said frame,-sheet-ca rry.ing blades, each provided with openings to receive said pins, whereby the blades are removably supported on said pins to project horizontally therefrom, one over the other, and sheet-holding clips mounted on the blades to swing to and from sheet-clamping position and each provided with an opening to register with one of said openings inthe blade when the clip is.in sheet-clamping position, whereby the clip isheld in said clamping position by one of said pins when the blade is mounted on the pins.
6. A device for supporting a series of sheet-holding blades. in spaced relation to separate sheets held thereby in superposed:
relation, and provide space for the passage of interleaved sheets or webs, said device comprising a carrying frame, a pair of supporting pins projecting upwardly therefrom, and a series of sheet-carrying blades each removably mounted on said supporting pins, one of said pins projecting upwardly beyond the other pin to facilitatethe mounting of the blades thereon.
7. A device for supporting a series of sheet-holding blades in spaced relation to separate sheets held thereby insuperposedrelation, and provide space for the passage of interleaved sheets or webs, said device comprising a carrying frame, a pair of pins carried by and projecting upwardly from said frame, and sheet-carrying blades, each provided with openings to receive said pins,
whereby the blades are removably supported on said pins to project horizontally there: from, one over the other. a
8. A device for supporting a series of sheet-holding blades in spaced relation to separate sheets held thereby in superposed relation, and provide space for the passage of interleaved sheets or webs, said device comprising a carrying frame, a pair of supporting pins projecting upwardly therefrom, a series of sheet-carrying units, each comprising a sheet-holding blade, a clip to clamp the sheet tothe blade, a spacing block, and a pivot uniting the blade, clip and block, said blade, clip and block provided with openings arranged to be brought in register and to receive said pins.
9. A device for supporting a series of sheet-holding blades in spaced relation to separate sheets held thereby, and provide space for the passage of interleaved sheets or webs, said device comprising a carrying frame, a series of sheet-holding-blades, means for attaching said blades to thesupporting'frame, and means for increasing the sheet-holding capacity of said frame, said last-mentioned means comprising a pair of holding pinsremovably attached to said frame and projecting upwardly therefrom,

auxiliary sheet-holding blades mounted on said pins, and individuallyremovable therefrom, and spacing blocks carried by said auxiliary blades.
10. In a carbon sheet-holding device, the combination of a supporting frame, pins sheet-holding blades having openings to receive said pins, the pins and openings being relatively arranged to permit the blades to be lifted off the pins, and to hold the blades parallel when in position on the frame.
11. In a carbon sheet-holding device, the combination of a supporting frame, pins. projecting upwardly from the frame, sheetholding blades having openings to receive said pins, the pins and openings being relatively arranged to permit theblades tobe lifted off the pins, and to hold the blades parallel when in position on the frame, and sheet-holding clips pivotally mounted on said blades and each provided with an opening to register with one'of said openings in the blade when the clip is in sheet-holding position, whereby each clip is locked in said position when its blade is mounted on said 1 12. Means for supporting a series of sheets, comprisinga supporting frame, a series of sheet-holding blades, holding clips pivoted to said blades to swing thereon into and out of position to clamp sheets onsaid blades, each blade and its holding clip being provided with openings which are in register when the clip is in sheet-holding position, and parallel supporting pins projecting upwardly from said frame, to project through the openings in' said blades and clips and thereby hold the blades and prevent rotation thereof 011 the support and also to lock the clips in sheet-holding position.
16. Means for supporting a series of sheets, comprising a. supporting frame, a series of sheet-holding blades, holding clips pivoted o said blades to swing thereon into and out of position to clamp sheets on said blades, each blade and its holding clip being provided with openings which are in register when the clip is in sheet-holding position, parallel supporting pins projecting upwardly from said frame, to project through the openings in said blades and clips and thereby hold the blades and pre vent rotation thereof on the support and also to lock the clipsin sheet-holding position, said pins being of a length to support a number of blades placed one over another thereon, and spacing blocks carried by the blades.

In a typewriting machine, the combination with means for supporting and guiding a plurality of superposed webs or work-sheets, as they are fed past the printing line, means for supporting and shifting intervening carbon sheets, said last-mentioned means comprising a'shifting frame arranged to be advanced with the webs, blades or arms on which the intervening carbon sheets may be mounted, means for attaching said blades'to said shifting frame comprising a pair of supporting pins projecting upwardly from the frame, said blades each provided at one end with a pair of openings arranged to receive said pins, whereby the blades are held, one over another, inparallel relation, and means spacing said blades to thereby separate the car bon sheets and provide space for the interleaved webs.
