Specification of Letters Patent.
' Applicationflled November 16, 1914. Serial No. 872,298.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES F. MEILINK, a citizen of-the United States of America, residing at Toledo, Lucas county, Ohio, have invented a new and useful Safe, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to housings, vaults or safes, especially for structures to withstand attacks by force or fire.
This invention has utility when incorporated in strong boxes or safe structures, etc.
Referring to the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective View, with a portion broken away, showing an embodiment of the invention in a cabinet or safe; Fig. 2 is a fragmentary horizontal section through the safe of Fig. 1 on the line IIII, looking in the direction of the arrow; Fig. 3 is an en larged longitudinal section through the bolt guide adjustable to line up with its bolt; Fig. i is an enlarged cross section of the adjustable door bead; Fig. 5 is a section of the door casing bead receiving seat; Fig. 6 is a front elevation, with parts broken away, of a two door safe or cabinet; and Fig. 7 is a fragmentary section on the line VHVII Fig. 6, looking in the direction of the arrow.
The structure embodies the pair of endless angle frames 1, 2, having the inwardly extending legs 3, and the legs 4 extending toward each other. Spacing the frames 1, 2, is the endless outer shell member 5 seating adjacent the angle legs 4. The front side of the cabinet is open and has 'thereabout an endless door casing of uniform thickness in ci'osssection of obtuse angle form embodying the angle leg 6 riveted to the leg 3 of the frame 1. This angle door casing has centrally the reentrant seat 7 from which the angle legs 6, 8, extend. Additional stiffening members 9 are mounted on the leg 3 of the frame 1 by the same rivets 10 as secure the door casing. The members 9 wit-h their squared ends, when forced into position in the frame 1, give rigidity thereto.
The members 9 are provided with threaded seats 11 for the stud bolts 12 the opposite ends of which bolts 12 are engaged by the nut 13 having the tapered portion 14 seating in the opening 15 of the leg 3 on the frame 2. The angle leg 3 is strengthened adjacent these openings 15 by the clips 16 spot welded thereto and serving as abutments for the back plate 17 0f the outer safe housing. Rotation of the notched screw head of the nut 13 draws the frames 1, 2, to firmly hold intermediate housing member 5.
Mounted on the after portions of the bolts or rods 12 are the nuts 18 and metal bars or strips 19. The nuts 18 force the several strips 19 against the inner housing back 20 having the cylindrical body or inner housing portion 21 extending forwardly therefrom with the open front side. The forward edge of this housing 21 seats in the recesses 22 of the brackets having the legs 23, 2d engaging the forward end portions of the bolts 12.
The opposing bracket legs 23, 24, are spaced apart by the sleeves 25 about the bolts 12, and rigidly so held to stiffen these brackets 23, 24 by the nuts 26. The leg 8 of the door casing terminating adjacent the recesses 22 forms seats for positively positioning the inner housing as to the door casing and rigidly so holding this inner housing assembled as to the outer housing and the frame. Cellular packing 27 may be introduced between the housings to resist heat conductivity, and incidentally stiffen the walls.
The housing closure or door comprises the front-plate 28 carried by the hinges 29 riveted upon the frame 1 of the housing and upon the plate 28 of the door. The hinges 29 are connected by rivets 30 to the door frame 31, 32, 33. Mounted onthe plate 28 is the endless uniform thickness acute angle door frame having the leg 31 riveted to'the plate 28, and the leg 32 extending away therefrom. Between these door casing angle legs 31, 32, is the blunt apex 33 providing clearance for the bead and bead mountmg.
Electric spot welded to the plate 28 about the door casing 31, 32, 33, is the mounting member 34 having the raised lip under which may extend the flange 35 of the bead 36 mounted in position by the screws 37, passing through the slots 38 in the head 36. For additional resistance against heat conduction, as well as insuring against water damage, the head 36 may have an asbestos packing covering 39. The head 36 is adjustable to the bead seat 7 of the door casing. Considerable nicety of fit may occur in this construction by loosely setting the screws 37 and then swinging the door into position as to the frame, when the head 36 with Patented July 18, 1916.
its packing 39 will be moved by the closed door to exactly 'fit into the seat 7. With this bead and packing thus positioned, the screws 37 may be tightened and the head is locked in proper assembled position.
The fixed studs 38 carried by the door frame enter openings 39 in the door casing to resist outward removal of the door, even should the hinges 29 be destroyed. The locking and unlocking of the door is ef-' fected by the throw or movable bolts 40 actuable by the handle 41 when released by the tumbler or look mechanism 42.
The holding member or guide 43 is mounted on the door plate 28 by the rivets 44, and has the openings 45'through which extends the self-alining guide sleeve 46 having the taper or flare end 47 engaging with one opening 45 and the opposite threaded end 48 extending through the other opening 45 to be engaged upon opposite sides of said opening 45 by the nuts 49, whereby the movable looking bolt 50 may be readily assembled in the door for throw operation, with the sleeve 46 but loosely in position. When the bolt has taken its position, the sleeve 46 having alined itself therewith may be'locked so to hold the bolt 50, by the nuts 49. The bolt 50 is accordingly firmly held in easy sliding position. r
The U-shaped holding members 43, besides serving as bolt guides, may be disposed about the door plate 28, reverse side out as holding means for the heat resisting packing. The. endless obtuse angle frame 52 mounted on the inner, sideof the door frame serves as an abutment upon which the back plate 53 of the door may be mounted.
The double door cabinet 54, Fig. 6, has the adjacent doors 55, 56, of similar structure as to the frame, assembling and mounting features as disclosed in connection with the safe of Fig. 1. The central side of the door 55 in provided With a bead seat 7 while the other door edges carry the bead 36 with its packing 39.
The wrought metal or sheet steel'and angle steel structure herein disclosed is of light weight, of great strength against attack and stiffness to retain its shape. The elements of the structure may be readily and accurately assembled for snug fits and ease of opera,- tion, with heat resisting water tight packed front or door opening.
What is claimed and it is desired to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. An angle door frame, a holder member adjacent said frame, and a bead adjustably mounted on said holder member.
2. A door casing having a bead receiving seat, and a door having a bead adjustable as to the door and as to said seat.
3. A structure comprising frame members, holding bolts for the members coacting therebetween, a housing in the frame, and
frame to position said housing as to the frame means for mounting the bracket means in position. V
5. A structure comprising a frame, an inner housing having an open side, bracket means connected to the frame and engaging said housing about said open side, said bracket means having legs, a spacing sleeve between the legs and bolt means for mounting the legs and sleeve in housing holding I position. A door casing of uniform thickness obtuse angle cross section having adjacent the apex of the obtuse angle a reentrant seat, each of the side walls of which seat extend toward the same face of the door casing. 8. A door having a bead, and a door casing having uniform thickness cross section throughout its extent, a reentrant seat to receive the head, the opposing walls of which seat each extend toward'the front face of the door casing, said doorcasing diverging from said seat walls. I
9. A door comprising a front plate and an endless uniform thickness angle door frame having the legs form an acute angle, one leg of' which acute angle extends inwardly and has the front plate mounted thereon. I I
10. An acute angle door frame having a blunt apex, and a front plate for the door abutting a leg of the angle and extending beyond said apex.
11. A housing structure having an open-c ing, a closure for the opening, a bolt for locking the closure in the opening, an ad justable guiding device for the bolt, and means for locking the guiding device in alined position as to the bolt. 12. A housing having an opening, a closure for the opening, a locking bolt for the closure as to the housing, and a mounting for the bolt comprising means providing a pair of guide openings, a sleeve loosely extending through said openings to guide the bolt, and means for locking the sleeve in the openings.
13. A housing having an opening, a closure for the opening, alocking bolt for the closure as to the housing, and a mounting for the bolt comprising means providing guide openings, a tapered end sleeve extending through pair of said openings, and
means for locking the sleeve as to the openings through which it extends.
14. A housing embodying an angle metal frame of endless extent having one leg of S the angle lying transversely of the endless extent of the frame, and angular interfitting stiffening means therefor crowded into the angle corner and seated against said leg of the angle transversely of the endless extent of theframe.
15. A door easing having a seat and a door frame having a seat, one of said seats being movable into centered coacting position with the other when the door frame is brought into position as to the casing.
16. A door casing having a groove formposition as to the casing.
