Application led November 18, 1914. Serial No. 872,723.
. cars especially adapted for the shipment of poultry and which .are usually provided with a large number of coops arranged in vertical order at each side of the car, a' central aisle being provided into which the several coops open.
The invention appertains to the doors for the coops, and consists of mechanism such as is hereinafter described and which is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a detail longitudinal central vertical section of a car, Fig. 2 is a detail elevation of one of the walls of the aisle, Fig. 3 is a detail side elevation partly in Section, of one of the aisle stanchions and a coop door applied thereto, and Fig. i is a detail side elevation of one of the stanchions showing :the door holding keeper.
The body of the car 10 may be of any desired construction, and is provided with aisle stanchions 11, 12, as many in number as may be desired, preferably formed of channel bars having their flanges faced inwardly toward the center of the car. The several coops (not shown) are arranged in vertical lorder-between adjacentv stanchions, and each coop is closed at its aisle end by a door, as 13. The coop doors may be of any desired form, except that each is provided with end plates 14, each having a vertical slot 15 vnear its lower end fo-r the reception of a pivot pin 16. These pivot pins are set through the flanges 17, 18, of the stanchions, and may be secured against longitudinal movement by means of lock nuts 21, 22. Such pins, associated with stanchions located between tiers of coops, project in both directions to support doors of each tier,
Each door is provided adjacent its upper corners with latch pins 23, 21e-each of such pins being preferably provided with an integral attaching plate, as 25which may be riveted or otherwise rigidly secured to the end plate 14 of the door. Akeeper plate 26 is rigidly secured, as by means of rivets, to a flange of the stanchion,` and coperates with the latch pin, as 23, to 4hold the door closed.
The keeper plates preferablyl loop outwardly from the stanchion intermediate of their ends, and each is provided with a laterally-opening downwardly extending recess 27 for receiving the latch pin, the slots 15 in the end plates of the-door permitting the latter to be raised to allow the latch pin to enter thel keeper recess and then lowered to lodgethe latch pin within the downward extension of the recess.
In order to guard against accidental opening of the door due to the jarring of the car intravel, the keeper 26 is slightly out of line with the hingerpin 16 so that the door is normally tilted inward when closed.
Furthermore, the downward extension 28 of the keeper recess is inclined downwardly and forwardly so vthat upward movement of the door tilts it still farther inward. Y As an additional precaution against opening, the keeper recess. is slightly enlarged upwardly at its inner end, as shown at 29, forming a pocket into which the latch pin will enter should the jarring be suliicient to throw the door upward to that extent,
thus preventing any tendency of the door to swing down should there be a lateral edge of the door, and a keeper attached to the side face of one of the stanchions and provided with a laterally opening stud-receiving recess having a downward forwardly inclined extension.
2. In a poultry car having coops, in coinbination, a pair of stanchions, a downwardly opening coop door pivoted to and between the stanchions and having vertical movement, studs projecting laterally from the door adjacent its swinging edge, and keepers fixed to adjacent side faces of the stanchions and each provided with a laterally opening stud-receiving recess having a downward forwardly inclined extension.
3. ln a poultry car having coops, in combination, a pair of stanchions, a downwardly opening coop door pivoted to the stanchions and having vertical movement, studs projecting laterally from the door adjacent its swinging edge, and keepers fixed to the stanchions and each having a laterally opening and downwardly extending recess for receiving one of the studs, the front wall of the recess extension being forwardly inclined toward its lower end. y
4C. ln a poultry car having coops, in Combination, a pair of stanchions, a downwardly opening coop door pivoted to the stanchions and having vertical movement, studs projecting laterally from the door adjacent its swinging edge, and keepers xed to the stanchions and each having a laterally opening and downwardly and upwardly extending recess for receiving one of the studs, the downward extension of the recess being inclined forwardly at its lower end.
5. ln a poultry car having a plurality of tiers of coops, in combination, a series of stanchions each formed of a channel bar, bars set transversely through the flanges of the stanchions and projecting therefrom at both ends;` outwardly bowed laterally recessed plates attached to the side faces of the stanchions, downwardly swinging coop doors located between adjacent stanchions, each door having vertical slots in its ends for receiving an end of a transverse bar as a pivot and laterally projecting` studs for engaging recesses in the bowed plates, such recesses being downwardly extended.
6. In a poultry car having a plurality of tiers of coops, in combination, a series of stanchions each formed of a channel bar, bars set transversely through the flanges of the stanchions and projecting therefrom at both ends, outwardly bowed laterally recessed plates attached at the side faces of the stanchions, downwardly swinging coop doors located between adjacent stanchions, each door having vertical slots in its ends for receiving an end of a transverse bar as a pivot and laterally projecting studs for engaging recesses in the bowed plates, such recesses being downwardly extended, the extensions being inclined forwardly at their lower ends.
7. ln a poultry car having a plurality of tiers of coops, in combination, a series of stanchions each formed of a channel bar, bars set transversely through the flanges of the stanc'hions and projecting therefrom at both ends, outwardly bowed laterally recessed plates attached to the side faces of the stanchions, downwardly swinging coop doors located between adjacent stanchions, each door having vertical slots in its ends for receiving an end of a transverse bar as a pivot and laterally projecting studs for engaging recesses Vin the bowed plates, such recesses being upwardly and downwardly extended. Y
8. ln a poultry car having a plurality of tiers of coops, in combination, a series of stanchions each formed of a channel bar, bars set transversely through the anges of the stanchions and projecting therefrom at both ends, outwardly bowed laterally recessed plates attached to the side faces of the stanchions, downwardly swinging coop doors located between adjacent stanchions, each door having vertical slots in its ends for receiving an end of a transverse bar as a pivot and laterally projecting studs for engaging recesses in the bowed plates, such recesses being downwardly extended and their lower ends being offset inwardly with reference to the transverse bars.
9. ln a poultry car having a plurality of tiers of coops, in combination, a series of stanchions each formed of a channel bar, bars set transversely through the flanges of the stanchions and projecting therefrom at both ends, outwardly bowed laterally recessed plates attached at the side faces of the stanchions, downwardly swinging coop doors located between adjacent stanchions, each door having vertical slots in its ends for receiving an end of a transverse bar as a pivot and laterally projecting studs for engaging recesses in the bowed plates, such recesses being downwardly extended, the extensions being inclined forwardly at their lower ends, and offset inwardly with reference to the transverse bars.
