Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Aug, 20, 1918.
Application filed February 23,1918. Serial No. 218,794.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES D. ADAMS,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Jacksonville, in the county of Duval and State of Florida, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stock-Car Doors and 'Gangways, of which the followmg is a specification, reference being'had therein to the accompanyingdrawing.
The invention relates to stock car doors and gangways and has for its objectto provide a door, that will prevent the stock from turning from the gangway, as they are being unloaded on to platforms. It has been found that stock, when being unloaded on to" a platform, from a stock car, over the usual gangway, will at times fall from the same, between the car and the platform if they should turn to the right or the left while leaving the carover the ordinary gangway now in use.
A further object is to so construct the car door so that a portion of the door will form a gangway, while other portions of the door will form side guards for the gangway when the car is being unloaded. Also to provide provided with guards.
A further object is to so'construct the door, so that the gangway section will hinge downwardly, on to the unloading platform, and the guard'sections will slidably move downwardly, upon guide posts and hinge outwardly forming side guards for the gangway and be held against movement by means carried by the sides of the gangway.
A further object is to provide locking means, whereby the sections of the door, will be locked, in relation to each other when the car door is closed.
With the above and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the details of construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment .of the invention herein described may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Figure 1 is a View of a portion of a stock car, showing the door applied thereto.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view on line 22 of I Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a sectional View on line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
V Fig. 4 is a sectional view through a portion of a stock car and the door thereof, showing the door open and the gangway in position for unloading stock.
I Fig. 5 is a perspective view of one corner of the gangway, showing one of the doors in position for engaging the end of the gangway.
Referring to the drawings, '1 designates a stock car and 2 one of its side walls, The wall 2 is provided with the usual door opening 3. Secured adjacent the sides of the door opening 3, by means of the rivets 4 are posts 5, which are parallel with the sides of the-door opening. Pivotally and slidably mounted upon the posts 5, by means of hinges 6 are doors 7 which are shorter than the height of the door'opening and are designed to form sides for the gangway, When the door is open and the gangway in position for unloading stock. The lower or gangway section 8 of the car door pivots upon the rod 9, which is mounted in the bearings 10 carried by the side sill 11 of the car, said door being pivotally connected to the rod 9 by means of the hinges 12, which a combination stock car door and gangway :in'turn are riveted orotherwise secured to thereby locking the doors and the gangway securely. together, when thedoor, as a whole is closed. Secured to the corners 19 of the doors 7, by means of rivets 20 are pins 21, which are adapted to engage the sockets 22 of the retaining plate 23 secured to the longitudinal top beam 24 by means of rivets 25.
Secured to the corners 26 of the gangway section 8 of the door, by means of rivets 27 are angle bars 28. These angle bars 28 are provided with arms 29 and are adapted to engage the vertical posts 5 when the car door is closed. When the gangway is in position for unloading, the arms 29 form means for retaining and preventing movement of the door sections which when in unloadingposition form side guards for the gangway.
To open the door and form a gangway for the stock to pass over to the unloading 8 is swung downwardly until its free end rests upon the unloading plattorm 30. Thenthe door sections are allowed to slide downwardly until the pins 21 are out of engagement with the sockets 22 and when out of engagement, the door sections 7 are swung outwardly until they are at right angles to the side of the car, when in this position they are allowed to slide downwardly upon the posts 5 until their lower ends rest upon the angles 28-, between the edges 32 of the gangway section 7' and the arms 29 of the angles, thereby'preventing swingingof the doors or guards 7 when in unloading positions; 7
' It will be seen-that a combination stock car door and unloadinggangway and guards therefor is provided in which it will be impossible for thestock to turnirom or fall o-fi' during the unloading of the car. It is also obvious that the sections of the door are positively locked together when the car door isclosed. I
The invention having been set forth, what is claimed asnew and useful is 1. A stock car door comprising a horizontally. pivoted, g angway section, vertical posts secured in. a, door opening, pivoted guard sections slidably mounted on said, posts, retaining bracketscarried by the sides of the gang'way sectiontor the reception of the lower ends of the guard sections when the gangway, is in position for unloading, said retaining brackets being so positioned that 7 they will engage the posts in, the door opening and limit the inward movement of the grangway section when the same is closed and means for locking the guard and gangway sections inrelation to each other when the door is closed.
2 A stock car door comprising a horizontally pivoted gangway section having retaining brackets at its sides, vertical posts Copies of thisflpatent may be obtained for secured in a door opening, vertically pivoted guard sections carried by said'posts and so constructed that when the gangway section is in: a position for unloading the lower ends of said guard sections will engage the retaining brackets carried by the sides of the gangwa 7 section, said retaining brackets being so positioned that they will engage the posts and be limited in their inward movement when the gangway is closed and means whereby the gangway and guard sections may be locked when the door is clo'sed;
3. A stock car door comprising a horizontally pivoted gangway section having retaining brackets at its sides, vertieally pivote'dj guard sections so constructed that when the gangway section is in a position for unloadingsaid guard sections will engage said retaining brackets and form side guards for saidfgangway.
i. A stock car door comprising a horizontally pivoted gangway section, vertically pivoted and slidably mounted guard sections and means carried by the gangway section for the reception of the lower ends of the vertically pivoted and slid'ably mounted gu rd sections when the gangway is in position for unloading.
5. A stock car door comprising a horizontally pivoted gangway section, vertically pivoted and slidably mounted guard sections, said guard sections having means for engaging sockets in the door frame when in extreme vertical positions, said gangway section v maintaining the guard sections in extreme vertical positions when the door as a whole is closed and' mea'ns for locking the guard sections and gang way section in relation to each other when in closed position.
Intestimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature.
