To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, J OHN SEIDEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Seattle, in the county of King and State of WVashington, have invented new and useful Improvements in Needle-Threading Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to needle threading apparatus and includes thread guiding means in conjunction with mechanism designed to receive the needle and hold the same in the desired position.
An object of this device is to provide a novel arrangement of elements including guiding and supporting means, with a view of attaining an efficient contrivance wherein a needle may be quickly. and easily threaded. 1
Another object of my invention is to provide a device of the foregoing type which has a needle holding receptacle disposed in conjunction therewith, the needle holding apparatus carrying a thread cutting elemerit thus greatly adding to the efiiciency of the invention. I
, A further object of my invention is to provide a commonsupport for each of the elements before mentioned in order to reduce the cost of manufacture and at the same time increase the durability thereof. A still further object resides in the production of a device which is characterized by the elements of strength and. lightness to a marked degree and one which may be manufactured and placed upon the market at a minimum cost.
WVith the above and other objects in view, my invention relates to such details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of the several parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views and in which:
Figure 1, is a front elevation of my invention showing parts broken away and in section, Fig. 2, is a vertical sectional view of the threading and needle supporting means illustrating the thread and needle in relation therewith.
In the accompanying drawings wherein is illustrated the preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 10 designates a substantially triangular supporting structure, designed to serve as a common'body portion upon which each of the elements may be supported. The body portion mentioned may be constructed of any suitable or desirable material. However, it is pointed out that wood of different nature would prove very 'efiicient for this purpose. Upon the common support mentioned,,I have, as set forth above, provided improved thread guiding and needle supporting means which may be secured thereto by any adaptable means. However, certain mechanism will be set forth hereinafter for thisv purpose. The thread guiding means consists essentially in an elongated tube element 11, the respective ends of which are flared as shown at 12 and 13 in order to facilitate the introduction of the end of the thread thereinto. The flared portion 12 of the tube is secured to the supportthrough the instrumentality of an eyelet 14 while the other flared portion is fastened to the. adjacent point of the support through the medium of an ear 15 as shown by means of a penetrant member extending through the ear and secured to the support. With the foregoing construction in view, it is apparent that the guiding means'mentioned may be formed of a met-a1 such as aluminum, thus not only decreasing the cost of manufacture but adding to the lightness of the entire device. The needle supporting means is disposed at substantially right angles relative to the horizontal axis of the tube 11 and consists of an elongated cylinder '16, communicating adjacent its lower extremity, with the tube 11 and projecting slightly below the same as shown at 17 in order to provide a suitable means for the head of the needle as illustrated in Fig. 2. The upper extremity of the cylinder 16 is flared as at 1.8 inorder to facilitate the insertion of the needle and is secured upon the support 10 through the medium of tongues 19 as' cured. The thread is then cut in the manner hereinafter set forth so that the needle is entirely ready for operation.
In conjunction with the supporting and guiding means set forth above, I have also provided facilities for accommodating needles of smaller sizes in order that they may be threaded quickly and easily. With this in view, I have provided transverse and longitudinal grooves 20 and 21 respectively in the body 10, the grooves communicating with each other as illustrated, openings 22 and 23 being also provided in the flared portions 18 and 13 respectively for communication therewith.
The greatest of stress is laid upon the provision of the subsidiary supporting means in view of the fact that the same adds greatly to the efficiency and relevancy of the invention.
Consistent with the above remarks, I have provided an efficient needle holding receptacle in correlation with a thread cutting element. The needle holding receptacle consists of an elongated cylinder 24, the lower end of which has a cap 25 in screw threaded relation therewith as is clearly illustrated. A bracket of the desired type such as is illustrated at 26 is provided for the purpose of maintaining the cylinder 24:
rigid with respect to the body 10. The
cylinder 24 can be constructed of any form of metal desired, in view of the fact that I do not limit myself to any specific form.
The knife element consists of a cutting portion 27 which has a circular fastening element 28 in proximity thereto, the latter serving as a support whereby the blade may be held upon the cylinder 24. The position of the blade enables the thread acted upon to be cut, the needle having first been threaded thereby adding greatly to the usefulness of the device.
The advantages resultant from the use of my invention will be readily comprehended by those conversant with the crude and unsatisfactory devices heretofore provided in this art. I
Such changes as are permissible by the subjoined claim may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
In a needle threading device, a support provided with a needle receiving groove, a metallic tube mounted on said support and provided. with an aperture to register with the terminus of said groove, said tube being conjunctively utilizable as a thread guide and as a.means to hold the needle against displacement relatively to said groove, an ear formed on said tube, and a means penctrating said ear and said support to pro vide a fastening means for said tube, and to permit said tube to be disposed parallel to the support when the device is not in use.
