N. M. MENOLD.
DOUBLE HATCHET WRENCH.
APPLICATION FltED MAR. 22. 1915.

UNETE NORRIS M. MENOLD, OF ESPYVILLE, PENNSYLVANIA.
DOUBLE-BATCI-IET WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 11, 1916.
Application filed March 22, 1915. Serial No. 16,259.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Nonnrs M. MENOLD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Espyville, in the county of Crawford and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Double-Ratchet lVrenches; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descrlption of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to double ratchet wrenches, designed more particularly for tightening up and removing nuts from rail joints, and one of the principal objects of the invention is to provide a ratchet wrench of simple construction which will operate quickly for turning the nut in either direction and which will be simple in construction, will be reliable in operation, and strong, durable and eflicient for its purpose.
The foregoing and other ob ects may be attained by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a double ratchet wrench made in accordance with this invention, Fig. 2 is an edge view of the same partly in section, and Fig. 3 is a detail section taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates one of the bearing members for the wrench, and 2 is the other bearing member, said members being secured by means of bolts 3 to a long handle 4L. The members 1 and 2 are cut away upon their inner sides as shown at 5, the member 1 having a round aperture 6 therein and the member 2 being provided with a smaller aperture 7 and said member 2 having a shoulder 8.
The wrench engaging member 9 is provided with a polygonal aperture 10 to receive a nut. It will be understood that this aperture may be square or of any other angular form depending upon the kind of nut with which it is adapted to be used. The member 9 is provided with a smooth bearing surface 11, and adjacent thereto is a ratchet wheel having a series of radially extending ribs or stops 12 substantially rectangular in cross section and having intermediate angular spaces 13. Extending from the ratchet wheel portion is a bearing stud 14: mounted in the aperture 7 of the bearing member 2, and a suitable washer 15 is held up against the outer side of the member 2 by means of a cotter pin 16 rendering the entire nut engaging head removabl and replaceable by another.
Mounted upon a removable pin 17 extending through the members 1 and 2 is a double pawl provided with oppositely extending projections 18 to engage the ribs or stops 12 on the ratchet wheel, said pawl adapted to be thrown to one side or the other for rendering the wrench available in applying nuts or in removing them from their bolts. Forming an extension of the pawl is a liaring weighted member 19, which is cut away upon opposite sides, and whose purpose is to hold the projections into engagement with the ribs without interfering with the operation thereof.
Various changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as defined in the claims.
l/Vhat is claimed is A double ratchet wrench comprising a handle, a pair of bearing members connected at one of their ends to one end of the handle on opposite sides thereof, their free dle and cut away upon their inner faces, said bearing members provided with openings, the opening in one member being smaller with the opening in the other member and concentric therewith, a wrench head mounted to rotate in the larger opening of one of said members, said head provided with a smooth bearing surface, a ratchet wheel formed upon said head, a stud ends projecting beyond the end of said hanformed centrally on the upper face of said head and projecting through the opening in sa1d member, and means extending through the stud and engaging the bearlng member,
preventing vertical movement of said head, a removable pin extending through said bearing members adjacent their outer ends, a douof the projections into engagement with ble pawl rotatably mounted on said pins, ratchet wheel. 10 said pawl provided with oppositely eXtend- In testimony whereof I affix my signature 7 ing projections adjacent its free end, a fiarin presence of two witnesses.
ing weight formed centrally between the NORRIS M. MENOLD. projections of the pawl, the opposite sides of Witnesses which are curved to conform to the config-. KERR. F. WILLsoN, uration of the ratchet wheel for holding one JOSEPH A. WILLsoN.
