TOP FOR CONVEYANCES.
Speccaton of Letters Patent.
Patented duly iii, 3Min?.
Application filed September 30, 1913. Serial N o. 792,567.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a side view of a top embodying my invention showing it folded baekgFig. 2 a similar view showing it folded forward.
In carrying out my invention, I make th main back bow b, of articulated form, it being composed of an upper section to engage the top-covering and a pair of straight lower sections which are secured to the upper section by stop joints 7c that permit thev contiguous ends of the membersto swing forwardly. These lower sections are pivotally secured to the vehicle body a at their lower ends, and are so jointed to the upper section, that in the unfolded position of the bow they form obtuse angles therewith (Fig. 2). When however, the bow is folded or opened up, the joints le will be thrownv forward (F ig. l) so that the bow is correspondingly shortened, and the cover carried by the bow is correspondingly advanced, so as to draw the back of the tup into substantial alinement with the back of the vehicle body. To main bow b, there are secured a pair of auxiliary back bows, c, d, and also arms t carrying a bow e, and arms g carrying an Outrigger bow f, which howyer do not form part of the present invenion.-
A lever Z pivoted at its top to the upper section of bow b, somewhat above hinge 7c, and at its lower end to the vehicle body, constitutes a brace or guide for the top dur ing the folding and unfolding operation.
.This lever is hingeless and in the folded position. of the top is brought into axial alinement with the body of the upper section of bow b, so that the upper portion of the lever will overlap the lower portion of said upper bow section.
I claim:
A vehicle top comprising an articulated bow having an upper section adapted to support a covering, a pair of lower sections pivoted at their lower ends to the vehicle body, stop hinges between the upper section and the lower sections, said lower sections being adapted to form obtuse angles at said hinges with said upper section, during the unfolded position of the top, and bracing members pivoted at their upper ends to said upper section a distance below the upper end thereof, and at their lower ends 'to the vehicle body, said bracing members being adapted to be axially alined with said upper section during said unfolded position.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
