Rom. CONSTRUCTION.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 11,1916.
Original application filed September 28, 1915, Serial No. 53,004. Divided and. this application filed March 3, 1916. Serial No. 81,823. I
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIBALD TRINKs, a citizen of the United States, andresiding in the city of Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented or discovered new and useful Improvements in Roll Construction, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists in a new and improved roll construction especially intended for the backing or tension rolls of rotarybrush washing machines, and similar purposes.
This patent application is a division of my pending patent application for Improvements in washing machines, filed September 28, 1915, Serial Number 53,004.
The object in view is the provision of a light weight, inexpensive and durable roll which is water-tight, presents an unyielding and unindentable perimetal surface and which will not sag, buckle or bend from use. To accomplish these purposes, I provide a roll structure comprising an outer metal cylinder, preferably of non-corrosive material, such as brass, and an internal reinforcement for said cylinder consisting of an expandible cylindrical socket member having slotted walls and a plug member driven into said socket member to expand the latter into snug supporting contact with the said metal cylinder. To prevent the entrance of water, the ends of said cylinder are closed with end members.
Novel features of construction and arrangement of parts will appear from the following description.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of my improved roll; Fig. 2 is an end view of the socket member; Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken 5 or other means for mounting length of the socket 2 is less than that of the cylinder 1.
3 is the frusto-conical plug adapted to enter the socket 2 and expand the same against the cylinder 1.
The socket 2 is first inserted into the cylinder 1 and is properly centered and held stationary while the plug 3 is driven into its bore, expanding the socket into snug c011- tact with the cylinder 1, thereby supporting and reinforcing the latter. The ends of the cylinder 1 are closed by members 4: turned from brass castings or otherwise formed of some non-corrosive material. Journal studs the roll extending outwardly axially of the ends 1, may be provided. The end members 4 are each provided with an annular perimetal surface 6 which fits snugly into the open end of the cylinder 1 and is sweated in place with soft solder. A radial flange 7 is also provided on the member 4, which abuts against the'end of the cylinder 1.
It is evident that my improved roll will present a hard, unindentable working surface; that it will not sag, bend or buckle, and that water and filth are completely excluded from its interior.
What I desire to claim is v 1. A roll structure comprising an outer metal cylinder and an internal reinforcement for the same consisting of an integral expandible cylindrical socket member having longitudinally slotted walls and a ta- ,pered plug member driven into said socket member to expand the latter against said cylinder, for the purpose described.
2. A roll structure comprising an outer metal cylinder and an internal reinforcement for the same consisting of an expandible cylindrical socket member having longitudinal slots in its Wall extending alternately from either end and a tapered plug member driven into said socket member to expandthelatter against said cylinder, for
' the purpose described.
3. A roll structure comprising an outer metal cylinder, an internal reinforcement for said cylinder consisting of an expandible socket member having its Wall slotted longitudinally alternately from either endand a tapered plug member driven into said socket member to expand the latter against said cylinder, and end members tightly closing the ends of said cylinder, for the purpose described.
4. A roll structure comprising an outer 'metal cylinder, an internal reinforcement VVILLIBALD THINKS.
