Description

DRAIN TILE.
APPLICATION rILED MAY a1, 1913.

Q/u z'zzzesses. Inventor wmwr/fwy,
THE NORRH, PEN-R5 c0 PHD/U LITHU WASHINGTON. Q i? UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE;
THOMAS SCOTT MURPHY, OF GHLARLESTOWN, 0HIO..
DRAIN -'.I.ILE.
Application filed May 31, 1913.
To all whom it may concem:
Be it known that I, THOMAS Soo'r'r MUR- PHY, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Oharlestown, in the county of Portage and State of Oh1o,
have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drain-Tiles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in drain tiles having a socket end.
The object of my invention is to so construct the socket end of the tile that when joined, or mated, with the plain end of a like tile it will locate said plain end properly and provide open spaces leading inwardly from the mouth of the socket to the interior of the tile, for the entrance of water thereto. I attain this object in the form and structure shown in the accompany ng drawing, in which,
Figure l, is a sectional elevation on line A, A, of Fig. 2, and Fig. 2, a partial sectional elevation on line B, B, of Fig. 1.
Like reference letters indicate like parts. Referring to the drawing; C, is a drain tile in the socket end of which are embodied my improvements, and D, is the plain end portion of a like tile in place within the socket, e, of tile, O. The inside diameter of socket, e, is sufficiently larger than the outside diameter of tile end, D, to form the open spaces, h, between the outside surface of tile end, D, and the inside surface of socket, c, Fig. 2. To locate tile end, D,
properly within socket, 6, there are radial ribs, 71, formed on the inner curved surface of the socket and projectin inwardly there from toward the axis of t e tile. To keep Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 8, 1914.
Serial No. 771,093.
tile end, D, a suflicient distance away from the open spaces, 70, between the end surface of tile end, D, and the bottom surface of the socket, there are extensions of ribs, 2', formed on the bottom surface of the socket; these extend toward the axis of the tile across the socket bottom, and project outwardly therefrom toward the mouth of the socket a distance equal to the desired width of the spaces, 70. The spaces, It, and, is, thus together form continuous passages leading and extending from the mouth of the socket to the interior of the tile. As an equivalent modification, instead of the four rib extensions which lie between tile end, D, and the bottom surface of the socket, there may be but one, or more, ribs and they may be so located as not to be extensions of any of the ribs '5.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- A drain tile having a socket end; the socket adapted to receive the opposite, or plain, end of a like tile and having three or more ribs projecting inwardly from its curved inner surface, and one or more ribs projecting outwardly from its bottom surface toward its mouth and so located as to limit the extent to which the plain end of a like tile may be inserted into said socket.
Signed at Kent Ohio this 24th day of May 1903.
THOMAS SCOTT MURPHY.
