Description
NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDMUND MORRIS, OF BURLINGTON, NEW JERSEY.
SLATE-FRAME.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 11,903, dated November 7, 1854.
- To all whom it may concern VBe it known that I, EDMUND MORRIS, of the city and county of Burlington, State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Mode of Making Slate-Frames, which invention consists in forming the frame out of a solid piece by sawing out the center and then cutting a kerf along and through each end of the frame, through which kerf the slate may be inserted and adjusted in a groove previously cut to receive it on the inside of the frame, said kerf being afterward lilled up by a tongue, the grain of which shall run in a direction contrary to the grain of the frame, said kerl answering the double purpose of admitting the slateyand eifectually strengthening the linner sides of the frame, said shaft' projecting through a table conveniently arranged for the purpose7 and revolving the saw or cutter in a horizontal plane. The frame is then passed over a saw, which cuts in each end` a kerf E, of the same width` with the groove inside, and extending down to the dotted lines C, C. The slate is then passed through either of these`end kerfs, adjusted in its place, the tongues O, O, Fig. 3, glued or otherwise secured in the kerfs, and the trarne smoothed off. The tongues, by being made to extend down through the whole of the cross grain end of the frame, as shown by the dotted lines, efectually strengthen the frame.
Fig. D, represents a perfect slate; Fig. 3 shows the tongue, sawed out to lill up the kerf, and make a perfect fit.
What I claim is- The mode of constructing a slate frame substantially as herein described.
EDMU ND MORRIS.
In presence of- WILLIAM C. MYERS, MICHAEL SHEMELIA.
