Drig'inal application led-August 27, 1913, `Serial No. 786,860. Dividedan'd this appliation filed February 111, 191e. Serial No.818361 To all 'whom t mag/'concern' Be it known that we, 'CHARLES Jason' 'ZIGLER' and VVILLnw/rl Peon Hollum@ citizens f the United States, residing at Chicago,
in the county of Cook and State of Illinois,v
This application is a division of our former app Aication for electric switches, led August, 7, 1913, serial No. 786,860, which applicatibndesribes the general construction ofan improved safety switch embodying our invention. c
The present invention relates more particularly to the contact members, and to the method .of attaching or mounting the same. Among/'the objects ot this invention are to provide a/switch structure having the vcontacts mountedvso that they are not apt Which may be adjusted for wear; to arrange the partsno as to" make as quick break as possiblewithout the useoi springs; and in general'to improve the construction of such devices 'and cheapen the cost thereof.
In the accompanying drawings illustrating this invention: Figure 1 is a front view of a switch with the cover removed from the box; Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same; and, Figs. Sand 4 are details of th stationary contact members. Y r
While our switch members may be arranged in variousw-ays, we have shown them in these drawings mounted in a box 5, which is providedvwith partitions or supports 6 and?, .preferably made of insulating material.v Thesesupports are each provided with one or more contacts 8 and 9, those on one support being arranged in alinement with corresponding ones on the opposite support. These contacts are of the particularimproved form shown in detail in Figs.
3 and et, and comprise base portions 10, by means of which they are secured to the plates, and outwardlv extending yielding contact portions 11. The latter are substantially L-shaped with the coA tact portion 12, substantially parallel with the base 10. An adjusting screw 13 passes through the contact members 11, one of such members being tapped to receive the threaded portion thereof, and is provided with a locking nut 14. By means of this adjusting screw the blades maybe drawn together to take up any wear.
The movable contact members 15 are of the novel form clearly shownI in Figs. 1 and 2 and comprise flat blades with their ends given quarter turnsA so as to bring the contact portions at substantially right angles to the f'laty central portion. These blades are mounted on 'a cylinder 16 which is preferably made of Wood or other suitable inat 17 to receive the flat central portion of the blades, which portions A t closely in such slots, and are thereby held in proper alinement. The blades are fastened in such position by means of screws or the like 18. The cylinder 16 is pivotally mounted midway between the upper and lower stationary contacts,'and is provided with a handle 19 for turning the same. The contact portion 12 of the stationary contact members are arranged so that they are substantiallyw at right angles to the ends of the blades 15, which permits the blades to pass in between the outer or free ends of these contact portions. This permits the stationary contact blades to be mader of relatively heavy material, and yet gives a flexible yielding contact. The meth-od of mountingI 'the blades 15 in the cylinder 16 makes a very eifective and substantial support for such blades'and provides an exceedingly cheap form of construction. Furthermore, the twisting ofthe ends ofthe blades tends to stiflen the contact portion thereof and to hold them in proper alinement It will also be noted that on account of these-blades being'mounted on a rotary support between the upper and lower contact members, there is little or no twisting strain on the blades and the strains due to opening and closing the switch or the roller, the ends of said blades being given a quarter turn so that they will stand in planes at right angles to the axiso thev roller,
sulating material and is' slotted vas indicated y table sufppm'b having a slot in the Side thereef, a cntact. blade secured in thebottoln 'of sadeot with its ends extending some '-5 distance beyond the Support, each end of .said blade being given a' quarter turn so that it will standn a vplane at right angles to the axis of the support to ferm Contacts'.
