0F HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT, A CORPORATION OF SPACING-WASHER.
Patented July 29, 1919.
Application filed July 18, 1917. Serial No. 181,216.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY VossLER, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, and a resident of Hartford, Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spacing-\Vashers, of which the following is a specification.
.The object of this invention is to provide an adjustable spacing washer for the purpose of eliminating end-play of a member which is mounted in a supporting part and secured against complete displacement by fixed collars.
The invention is illustrated in its use in an electrical switch, where it is of particular advantage in accurately positioning the spindle to compensate for variations in the switch base, due to shrinkage or warping in manufacture.
Figure 1 is a sectional view of a simple form of electrical snap switch in connection with which the invention is used.
F ig. 2 is a plan and edge view of the washer made in accordance with my in vention.
Referring to the drawings, a denotes a switch base of porcelain, or other suitable material, 6 the switch spindle, 0, (Z collars on the switch spindle above and below the base and by means of which the spindle is secured in position, 5 the adjustable spacing washer located between one of said collars as d and the base a to take up any endplay of the spindle in the base.
The washer 5 comprises an inner part 6 and an outer part 7 which is apertured to receive the spindle. The outer part 7 is set down out of the plane of the inner part 6 and any desired thickness of washer may be secured by forcing the inner part into the outer part.
This washer is conveniently made by shearing the inner part from the outer part by a properly sized punch, the action of which is stopped before the two parts are separated.
In the manufacture of electrical switches the space between the two collars 0, d, is designed to be just enough to take the thickness of the base but since the composition from which the base is made, and especially porcelain, is apt to shrink in manufacture, it is desirable to provide some means to compensate for this shrinkage in order that the movable switch blades shall always be alined with the stationary contacts. A resilient structure, such as a spring washer is objectionable for the reason that it would provide so much frictional resistance that the snap action of the switch might be interfered with. Furthermore, any resilient member would exercise a constant pressure on the porcelain which might tend to crack it. Heretofore it has been customary to machine 01f a part to the proper size to take up the end-wise play of the spindle but this has necessitated careful fitting and an extra machining operation. An adjustable spacing such as here shown and described can be properly fitted during the assembling of the spindle with the base until one of the collars, as d, which is removable can be engaged with the spindle.
While this device finds a practical utility in connection with electric switch constructions I do not desire it to be understood that it is limited to this particular use.
I claim as my invention:
An adjustable spacing washer made in two parts with a face of one out of the plane of the corresponding face of the other;
one of said parts being frictionally supported by the other and relatively movable axially thereof.
HENRY VOSSLER.
