Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed February 25, 1914. Serial No. 821,024.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ERNEST H. SWIFT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hartford, in the county of Hartford, State of Connecticut, have invented a new and Improved Package-Roll of Metallic Leaf, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to packages of metallic leaf that are wound upon a core, the metallic leaf being placed upon a backing or base of paper or similar material before the winding takes place, and an object of my invention, among others, is to provide for such a roll a core that may be separated by the use of an instrument that will not waste or cut away any of the material.
One form of package roll embodying my invention and in the construction and use of which the objects herein set out, as well as others, may be attained, is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a package roll wound upon my improved core. Fig. 2 is an end view of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail side view of a separated disk. Fig. 4 is a view partially in lengthwise section through the core showing its action under the influence of the cutting tool.
By the use of my invention described herein I am enabled to produce a package roll of metallic leaf having a core formed of extreme rigidity and strength, which is a desirable feature of wooden cores heretofore used, but which wooden cores were objectionable from the fact that they could not be out without a waste of the material upon them. My improved package, however, possesses the advantage that the core may be out without a waste of material and in a manner to produce a package having an extremely finished appearance.
In the accompanying drawings the numeral 5 indicates the core of my improved package roll, this core being formed of a single piece of paper spirally wound, the paper being of proper width to produce a package 7 of the required length, this core being wound upon a quill 6 of paper or similar material. The paper is tightly wound to produce a core of the required thickness to possess the requisite qualities as to rigidity, the several wraps 0r layers of the paper being free from any adherent material, and the end of the paper strip being secured in any desired manner. In fact I contemplate cases where the end may not be secured.
The metallic leaf, with its base or backing of paper or like material is wound upon this core to the desired extent, and a pack age is thus produced which may be easily separated into comparatively short lengths 8 by the use of a knife, the package being rotated in this operation and the knife cutting entirely through the metallicleaf and the core, thus producing a package having extremely smooth sides. The formation of the core is such that it will not break and crack, as will a wooden core, if an attempt be made to cut it, but the several layers of the paper of the core will slide one upon another to produce a gash of a width to permit ready entrance of the knife blade. That is, the superposed layers of paper in the core readily yield to the action of the knife and permit it to easily enter the material and sever the short lengths from the main roll. The form that will be assumed by the core of the disk being severed is shown i Fig. 4 of the drawing.
While I have shown and described herein a satisfactory means of carrying my invention into effect, this may be changed to a greater or lesser extent without departing from the spirit and intent of the invention.
I claim 1. A package roll of metallic leaf including a core separately formed from paper tightly wound into a number of superposed layers to the required thickness, said layers being slidable one upon another.
2. A package roll of metallic leaf including a core separately formed from paper of a width equal to the length of the core, said paper being tightly wound into a number of superposed layers to produce a core of the required thickness, said layers being slidable one upon another.
