To all rwhom t may concern:
Be it known that I, NILs O. HEDMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Leadville, in the county of Lake and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Jacks, of which the following is a specification.
The object of the present invention, which relates to improvements in jacks, is to provide means for lifting an object in a vertical direction and independent means for moving the lifted object in a horizontal plane. Such implements are particularly designed for use in moving large and heavy objects such as houses, cars and the like, and the essential characteristics of the present device reside primarily in the provision of a screw having an operating member for raising the same, actuating mechanism carried by said screw, and means on which the object to be moved rests, said last-mentioned means being positively actuated by the aforesaid actuating mechanism.
More sp'ecilically, the jack comprises a swiveled head carried by the screw, a gear element mounted therein, an operating. member for said gear, a rack member engaging the gear for movement thereon, and means for locking the head from swiveling action during movement of the object borne by the rack.
lVith the above and other objects in view, this invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts all as hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein j Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly broken away and in section, of a preferred embodiment of my device. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section-al view taken about on the plane indicated by the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a similar section taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a fragmentary sectional view approximately on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a sectional view on the line 5 5 of Fig. l; and Fig. 6 is a perspective view of a slightly dierent form of rack for use in conjunction with this device.
Throughout the following detail description, and on the several figures of the drawing, similar parts are referred to by similar reference characters.

Upon the upper end of the base 1 is rotatably mounted an exteriorly toothed lcollar G, said collar resting upon suitable bearings 7 for facilitating rotation in the use of this and a lrnurled locking nut 11 coacting with the free end of the section 8 and the handle of the lever for holding said lever in position about the collar 6. The dog 10 is held in its position by means of a spring actuated cam 12, and said dog controls the-raising and lowering of the screw 2 upon actuation of the lever 8 Vaccording to which extremity of the dog is coacting with the toothed collar 6.
The screw at its upper end is provided with an annular flange 13 constituting a seat for the jack head 14 which preferably rests upon bearings 15 interposed between the head and the flange above referred to. The head is, therefore, capable of swiveling action and this is particularly advantageous in constructions of this character. rllhe head 14 is hollow in formation and disposed within said head is a traversing gear 16 mounted upon the axis 17 having its bearing in the head. The gearv 16 at one side is provided with a rectangular shaped recess in cross section to receive the lateral projection 18 of a pinion 19 interlocking said parts together, the pinion, as most clearly shown in Fig. 2, being carried by the outer extremity of the axis or bolt 17 just referred to. Surrounding the pinion 19 and adapted for actuation thereof is a lever 20 similar inV construction to the lever 8, being provided` with a reversible dog 21 whereby said pinion vand consequently the traversing gear 16 may be rotated in either direction. n
The gear 16 is adapted to be locked from rotation in either of its directions of movement by means of oppositely disposed spring actuated pawls or locking members 22 similar in construction and coaction and normally tending to engage the gear 16. These locking members areV provided with exteriorly arranged manipulating means 23 for engaging and disengaging the respective pawls with the gear 16, the members 23 being furthermore, provided with locking pins 24 for engaging with the face of the head to si red.

rllhe head 111 is provided with suitable locking means for preventing swivcling action thereof during use of the invention, as hereinafter more fully set forth, and such means in the drawing, is in the form of a hook 25 carried by the casing and adapted to engage in a recess 26 in the flanged extremity of the screw Q.. This flange may be provided with any suitable numberv of recesses for this purpose, so that the head may be locked at any desired position.
As will be noted by reference to Fig. 1, the gear 16 projects slightly above the head of the jack and l preferably employ a rack member 27 for engaging the object to be lifted, said rack resting upon the gear 1G. 1t will be obvious that when an object has been lifted by operation of the lifting lever '8, said object may have imparted thereto traversing movement'by actuation of the lever E20. By reason of the swiveling of the` head, the object may be moved in any desired direction according to the disposition ofthe rack member 27 upon which said object is adapted to rest. ln order to prevent move-ment in an undesired direction, by reason of the swivel connection of the head to the screw, said head may be locked by means of the hook member 25 so as to insure the movement of the object in the manner de- VVhen it is desired to give an arcuate movement to the object lifted, it is contemplated to use instead of the `type of rack disclosed in Fig. l, an arcuate shaped raclr 27, such as disclosed in Fig. G of the drawing. These racks may be suitably cut away at their extremities to permit of overlapping of sections and formation of a continuous rack member such as desired when the object to be lifted is to be moved a considerable distance. lWith a device of this character, cars, or houses may readily be displaced or properly positioned quickly by reason of the adjustability of the parts of the jack. It is to be understood that the rack member hereinbefore mentioned may be dispensed with under certain conditions and the gear element 16 allowed to coact with the object to be lifted under which condition the traversing movement may be quickly accomgeared to the actuating means for imparting trai/*elsing movement to the object mentioned.

In a jack of the class described, the combination of a base, a liftino member mounted therein, a head swiveled on said lifting member, actuating means carried by said head for imparting traversing movement to the object lifted, and means for locking the head from swivel action at any of a number of different positions.

In a jack of the class described, the combination of a base, a lifting member mounted therein, a head swiveled on. said lifting member, actuating means comprising a gear projecting from the head and an operatingmember therefor, a toothed rack for carrying the object lifted and with which said gear member meshes, and locking means for holding the head from swiveling during actuation of the gear.
ln a jack of the class described, the combination of a base, a lifting member mounted therein, a head swiveled on said lifting member', actuating means carried by said head for imparting traversing movement to the object lifted, and means for locking the head from swivel action, comprising a hook pivotally connected to the head and adapted for engagement with the lifting member, said member having a recess in which said hook interleclrs.
5. ln a jack of the class described, the combination of a base, a lifting member mounted therein, a hollow head carried by said lifting member, a gear member therein, locking members for holding said gear from movement in either direction, a pinion disposed exteriorly of the head and having fixed relation with the gear aforesaid, and an operating lever coperating with the pinion for operating said gear.

In a jack of the class described, the combination of a base, a lifting member mounted therein, a hollow head carried by said lifting member, a gear member therein, locking members for holding said gear from movement in either direction, a pinion disposed eXteriorly of the head and having fixed relation with the gear aforesaid, an operating lever coperating with the pinion for ope ating said gear, and manually operable means connected to the locking members for holding the same in or out of relation to the gearmember.
7. ln a jack of the class described, the combination of a base, a lifting screw mounted therein, operating means for said screw, a head carried by said screw, a traversing gear mounted in said head, an axle therefor, said gear having a recess at one side, a pinion disposed eXteriorly of the head on the axle and having a projection interlocking in the recess of said gear, an operating member for said pinion compris- 1,190,163N Y y i3A ing a lever having an arcuate terminal and a pivoted section connected thereto for surrounding the pinion aforesaid, and a reversible dog engaging said pinion whereby to actuate the pinion and the gear in either direction. l
