EMBROIDERING-MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.

Be it known that I, GOTTWALT S enna, a subject of the German Emperor, residing at Plauen, in Vogtland, in the Kingdom of Saxony, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Embroi.dering-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
When a continuous piece of fabric is used, which is embroidered in successive sections or parts by a continuous feeding of thefabric, the completed continuous design shows distortions or derangements at the junction of two adjoining sections. To eliminate this defect, I provide a device, whereby the end line of the completed section, at which the next succeeding portion of the design is to join with the already completed portion, is stiffened and securely held against distortion or displacement during the feeding of the fabric.
My invention will be clearly understood by reference to the accompanying drawing, in which similar characters denote corresponding parts and in which- Figure lshows the device in a position before the commencement of the feeding of the fabric, Fig. 2 shows the same at the completion of the feeding and Figs. 3, 4 and 5 are enlarged cross sections of details of construction. 1
Let 1 denote the tambour frame suspended from rollers 2 and equipped with vertically disposed fabric rollers 3, l, the fabric being adapted to be fed from say roller 3 onto roller 4. In Fig. 1 the part 5 of the fabric stretched longitudinally of the fabric frame is assumed to have been embroidered and it is now desired to feed the fabric so as to bring a new section or part of it into embroidering position. During the embroidering operation the longitudinal edges of the stretched piece of fabric are suitably fastened in longitudinal members 18, 18, as by hooks 18 or other suitable means provided on said member, which in known manner are arranged on the tambour frame and which may be provided with well known adjusting means 20, 20 to allow of the stretching of the fabric breadthwise.
My new device comprises two sets of fastening members 6, and a rectangular frame 7 8 which by set screws 9 is made adjustable in height and which at each side is provided with projecting points 10, 10 and 11, 11.
fabric is rolled off the roller 3 The members 6 are transportable from one end of the tambour frame to the opposite end thereof and are provided with hooks 6 or other suitable means to allow of the longitudinal edges of the fabric above and below the line 15-16 thereof being fastened thereto. These end members are adapted to be temporarily fixed to the parts 18, 18 by screws 17, 17. Opposite the pins 10, 11- of the frame 7, 8 the cross pieces of the tambour frame also carry projecting pins 12, 12 and l3, l3 and bars 14 formed at their ends with hooks are adapted to be slipped over the opposite pins 10, 12 when the frame is at the left hand end of the tambour frame (Fig. 1) or over the opposite pins 11, 13 when the frame is at the right hand end (Fig. 2).
During the embroidering operation the longitudinal edges of the fabric are hooked to the hooks 18 of the parts 18, 18 and to the hooks 6 of the end members 6 located at the ends of said parts 18. When it is desired to feed the fabric and to roll up the embroidered part or section and bring a fresh blank part or section into embroiderlng position, the stiffening or reinforcing frame 7, 8 after it is adjusted in height by means of the set screws 9 to conform with the adjustment of the members 18, 18 or to, the stretched condition of the fabric, is fixed atits ends to the left pair of members 6, 6. by the screws 17, 17 and to the tambour frame by the connecting or coupling bars 14, 14. By this frame 7, 8 the line of connection 1516 is secured against any distortion in vertical and longitudinal directions. Now the end members 6, 6 are unfastened from the parts 18, 18 by unscrewing the bolts 17, and the frame 7, 8 isdisconnected from the tambour frame by remov'ingl the" links or coupling bars 14:; Thereupon the fabric is unhooked from the parts 18, 18 and from the end members 6, 6 at'the right end of the tambour frame and 'the said right end members are removed.
The fabric together with the frame 7 8 and the left pair of members 6, 6 with which said frame is still connected, is fed in the direction from left to right so that the embroidered section 5 of the fabric rolls upon the roller 4 and a blank piece 19 of the (Fig. 2). When the frame 7, 8 has reached position, the bars let are slipped over the the end r pins 11, 13 and the plain fabric 19 is then again hooked to the parts 18, 18 and to the end members 6, which have been in the meantime transported from the right end of the tambour frame to the left end of the tambour frame and which have been fastened to the parts 18, 18 by the screws 17, 17. The fabric thereupon is stretched breadthwise by adjusting the nuts 20 on the screw bolts 20. The members 6, 6 at the right end of the tambour frame that are connected to the frame 7, S are fixed to the parts 18, 18. In this manner the line 15, 16 was transported from left to right without becoming distorted or deranged in longitudinal and vertical directions relative to the tambour frame. The frame 7, 8 is subsequently unscrewed from the parts 6, 6 and on lifting the links 14: removed from the tambour frame 1.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In an embroidering machine, the combination with the tambour frame, of a de vice for preventing the line of connection of two successive portions of a continuous design from becoming distorted or deranged during the feeding of the fabric, and comprising longitudinal end members to which the edges of the fabric above and below said line are removably fastened, means for temporarily securing said members against longitudinal displacement and means for stifiening the portion of the fabric located be tween said members, said device including said members and said last named means being adapted to move along with the fabric when fed and to be removed therefrom after a new portion of the fabric has been brought into embroidering position and stretched.
2. In an embroidering machine, the combination with the tambour frame, of a device for preventing the line of connection of two successive portions of a continuous design from becoming distorted or deranged during the feeding of the fabric, said device being adapted to be fastened to the tambour frame both prior to and after the completion of the feeding of the fabric and to move along with the fabric while the latter is being fed and comprising longitudinal stiffening members to which the edges above and below the line of connection of two successive portions of the design are fastened, means for temporarily securing said members in position, means for stiffening the part of the fabric between said members, and means for temporarily fixing said last named means in position.
3. In an embroidering machine, the combination with the tambour frame, of longitudinal members carried by the tambour frame and by which the fabric is fastened and stretched during the embroidering operation, a device for preventing the line of connection of two successive portions of the design from becoming distorted or deranged during the feeding of the fabric, said device being adapted to be fastened to the tambour frame both prior to and after the completion of the feeding of the fabricand to move along wit-h the fabric while the latter is being fed and comprising longitudinal transportable end members to which the parts of the edges above and below the line of connection of two successive portions of the design are fastened, means for stiffening the part of the fabric located between said members, and means for temporarily fixing said last named means to the frame.
4c. In an embroidering machine, the combination with the tambour frame, of longitudinal adjustable members carried by said tambour frame and by which the fabric is fastened and stretched during the embroidering operation, transportable end members capable of being temporarily fastened to said longitudinal members and including means for fastening the fabric thereto, and a stiffening adjustable frame capable of being removably fastened to said end mem bers and adapted to be moved together with the latter and the fabric while said fabric is fed from one end of the tambour frame to the other, said stiffening frame and end members serving to prevent the line of con nection of two successive portions of a continuous design from becoming distorted or deranged during the feeding of the fabric.
