IMPROVEMENT IN SEWING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N o. 118,913, dated September 12 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, FREDERICK E. DECKER, of' Newark, in the county of Essex and State of' New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Sewing-Machine Attachment; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description t-hereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specication.
This invention relates to a new and improved attachment to a sewing-machine for turning the rough edges from the leather covering of' round or oval satchel-handle stock at the same time they are stitched on by the machine, or as they pass from the needle when being sewed; and it consists in a pair of' grooved guiding-wheels and a pair of' rotary cutters, having operating gear arranged to be actuated by a pawl-lever connected with the feed-bar, to be moved by it for f'eeding the handle along at the same time that the feed-plate of' the machine is worked.
Figure 1 is a side elevation ofthe said attachment and a section of a part of a sewing-machine table. Fig. 2 is a section of' Fig. 1 on the line w, as seen by looking toward the left; and Fig. 3 is a view of the same section looking` in the opposite direction.

A and B represent a pair of grooved wheels, which are to be mounted so as t0 receive the leather-covered rope or cord forming the trunk or Satchel-handle stock C between them as it passes away from the needle after the two edges of the cover have been stitched together, being so arranged relatively to the sewing-machine table D as to receive it in the plane of the table. The wheel A has one edge, E, made in the form of a rotary cutter, and is mounted on the shaft F, supported in the two standards G G1, which are to be attached to the machine in any way by which the wheels will be maintained in the right place; or any other standards suited to different machines may be used. This shaft F drives, by wheel H, another shaft, I, mounted in the support G1, and another, GJ, above the shaft F; this shaft, which extends only as far as the vertical plane ofthe cutting-edge E ofwheelA, carries another rotary cutter, K, which is to operate in conjunction with E, and is held up to it laterally by a spiral spring, L. The grooved roller B is mounted on a stud-pin, M, mounted adjustably in the standard G, for rising and falling to suit handlestock of different sizes, being held in said standard by a bearing, N, capable of sliding up and down, and pressed downward by the rods O and coiled springs l), the latter being arranged to have the tension varied by the nuts Q. R is a ratchet-wheel, placed on the shaft F for turning it, by means of' pawls S and a pawl-lever T, the latter being mounted on the sewing-machine and connected withv the feed-bar of' the sewing-machine in any way to beV worked by it to cause the feed-rollers A B to move simultaneously with the said feed-bar ofthe sewing-machines. These rollers not only feed the handle-stock along from the needle, but they hold it at the same time, so that the cutters may act on the projecting edges V of the leather cover to trim it olf evenly.
I propose to make such adaptation ofthe rollers as may be requisite for trimming the rough edges from any work done on a sewing-machine.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The feeding and holding-rollers A B and rotary cutters E K combined together in an attachment adapted for application to a sewingmachine for opera-tion in connection therewith, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. The roller B arranged for rising or falling relatively to the roller A and the cutter K, substantially as specified.
