To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HENRY A. BEDNASZ, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Window Shade and Curtain Supports, of which the following is a specification.

curtain supports, and one of its objects is to provide a novel and improved combination fixture of this character which is adjustable for cooperation with a companion support or fixture whereby shade rolls and curtain poles of different lengths may be supported.

A further object of the invention is to provide a shade support, from which the curtain pole support may be omitted, and which embodies the adjustable feature described.

A still further object of the invention is to provide an improved center bracket or fixture for cooperation with side brackets or fixtures in a double window construction.

A still further object of the invention is to provide a hanger for mounting the side or center brackets or fixtures upon a wall or window frame.

The invention consists of the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts herein fully described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings in which 2- Figure 1 is a side elevation of .a combination side bracket or fixture embodying my invention, showing a bracket piece for supporting one end of a shade roll. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the hanger bracket or fixture. Figs. 6 and 7 are, respectively, longitudinal transverse sections thereof. Figs. 8 and 9 are respectively, a side elevation and a vertical front to rear section through a modified form of bracket or fixture adapted for use as a'shade fixture only. Fig. 10 is a top plan view of a center bracket or fixture fora double window or the like Fig. 11 is an irregular horizontal section on the line l111 of Fig. 10. Fig. 12 is a vertical front to rear section through a bracket shown in Figs. 10 and 11.

Referring now more particularly to Figs. 1 to 7, inclusive of the drawings, 1 designates a combination bracket or fixture of the character described, which is made of sheet metal, nickel-plated or otherwise suit- My invention relates to window shade and ably treated, and which comprises a back plate or strip 2 having at its upper end a forwardly extending horizontal arm 3, terminating in a downwardly and rearwardly curved supporting plate or strip A, the portions 3 and A being connected at their forward ends by a short vertical connecting portion 5.

The supporting plate or strip A is disposed above and in spaced relation to another curved supporting plate or strip. 6, which extends upwardly and is secured to the upper portion by a rivet or other suitable fastening 7 the lower ends of the plates or strips A and 6 being arranged in overlapping relation and brazed or soldered or otherwise suitably fastened to each other and to the back plate or strip 2.

The intermediate portions of the plates or strips A and 6 are pro erly spaced to receive an adjustablesha e supporting mem'v her 8, consisting of two or more telescopic tubes 9, 9, etc, which are provided with grooved tongues or flanges 10 and slidably engage each other, the flanges of the outer tube also engaging guide groves 11 in the plates A and 6, whereby the tubes of the supporting member 8 are adjustable as 'a unit transversely of the fixture and are also adjustable on each other, so that the shade supporting members of companion fixtures on a window frame or the like may be spaced a greater or less distance apart to support shade rolls of different lengths, as will be readily understood. In practice, companionv fixtures, one having a bracket piece 12 provided with an angular opening, and the other provided with a bracket piece 12 having a circular opening, will be employed in the ordinary manner to receive the angular end of the shaft at one end of the shade roll. and the journal. at the oppositeend of the shade roll.

It will be understood that the bracket or fixture may be constructed as thus far described when adapted for use solely asa shade fixture, if it is to be employed also as a curtain support, the plate or strip 6 may be extended forwardly at its upper end to provide a pole supporting arm 13 arranged in horizontal alinement with the arm 3 and carrying a pole supporting bracket 14-. This bracket 14: may be slidably mounted upon the arm 13 and provided with engaging hooks or fingers at opposite sides which extend under said arm 13 and thus slid bly connect the pole supporting bracket with the fixture so that the said pole supporting bracket may be adjusted toward and fromthe face of the wall or window frame to support a curtain pole at different distances from the wall or frame. As shown, the bracket 14L is provided with a semi-circular portion 14 forming a seat to receive the curtain pole, and this part 14L is slotted, as

, at M toreceive a se mental kee er member 1-1 which may be disposed in the position shown in Fig. 1 to hold the end of the pole from displacement, or in the position shown in Fig. 3 to releasably support the end of the pole. For the purpose of securing the side brackets of the construction described to a wall or window frame and also for securing a center bracket thereto, 1 provide a hanger bracket 15, consisting of a plate or strip of metal having openings for the passage of suitable fastening devices 16, and also having at its lower end a pair of superposed openings 17 and 18, and an opening 18, for a purpose hereinafter described. At its upper end the central portion 19 of the bracket is offset outwardly to provide a keeper socket or recess 20, with the lower end of which communicates opposite lateral or side slots 21 separated by an intermediate or retaining piece 22. As shown, each bracket or fixture 1 has its back plate 2 provided with a downturned hook 23 formed by a portion of the metal displaced therefrom, which hook is adapted to be fitted down into the socket or recess 20 to secure the fixture to the hanger bracket, The back plate 2 is also provided with an opening 24 to register with the opening 17, the said registered openings being adapted for the passage of an ornamental fastening screw 25 which enters the wall or wood work to hold the bracket or fixture against displacement. A reinforcing plate 25 may be embedded in the wood work of the window frame, and this plate is provided with openings 17 and 18 which register with the openings 17 and 18, so that the screw 25 may be applied at a higher or lower elevation to support the fixture at a desired elevation. The opening 18 is pro vided for the'passage of a screw 18 for more firmly securing the lower end of the plate 15 in position.

In the form of my invention illustrated in Figs. 8 and 9, showing a form of bracket adapted solely for use as a shade support, the bracket or fixture is made of backing front plates or strips 26 and 27, which are brazed, soldered or otherwise united, and the front plate or strip 27 is formed with a looped portion 28 having guide grooves to receive the flanges of a telescopic shade supporting member of the construction previously described, the loop 28 being thus the equivalent of the loop formed in the structure previously described by the plates or members 1 and 6. The plate 26 is provided with the supporting hook 23 and the lower ends of the two plates 27 and 28 are provided with an opening 17 for the passage of a fastening screw 25 of the construction previously described.

The features of construction disclosed generally in Figs. 1 to 7, inclusive, may be embodied in a type of double or center bracket or fixture 1 of the structure shown in Figs. 10 to 12, inclusive, and which is especially adapted for use to support the adjacent ends of two shade rollers and two curtain poles, thus rendering it of value for use upon a double window, to avoid the necessity of employing a pair of inner brackets. This fixture is similar in general construction to the side bracket or fixture with the exception that the channeled rest of the pole supporting arm 13 is made of increased length to receive the adjacent ends of two poles, while the shade supporting member 8 is provided with bracket pieces to support the adjacent ends of two shade rollers. In addition, the vertically disposed hook 28 is dis pensed with and in place thereof a laterally or transversely disposed hook 23 is employed, and this hook, which may be either right or left is adapted for the passage of a fastening screw 25, which screw is in this connection adapted to extend through the lower opening 18 in the hanger bracket to fasten the center bracket in position. It will of course be understood that this center bracket will take the place of two ordinary brackets, the advantage of which will be obvious.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings, the construction and mode of operation of my improved fixture will be readily understood and it will be seen that the invention provides a fixture of the character described which is simple and comparatively inexpensive of construction, while ornamental in appearance, which is adapted to be employed in difierent forms as disclosed for interchangeable use in connection with a hanger bracket of the type set forth, whereby provision is made for supporting window shades alone, or window shades and curtains in combination, and for employing a double bracket instead of a single bracket when such use is of advantage.
